yes... I didn't even know this forum existed before 2006, not that it's been around all that long anyway. I grew up attending and following 1-AA (fcs) football since I was a kid. So hardly a bandwagon fan. Have traveled to many games since the '70's to watch App play in all parts of the country (including Chatty), so hardly a "bandwagon fan". You can't judge the degree of a fan by the number of posts they've made on some random blog...

I don't think Villanova is 18 points better than ASU, but they were today, and that's all that matters. APP simply didn't execute and Nova did, that's all there is to it. APP had their chances in the 2nd half but just couldn't get it done, Nova had an answer for everything, they will win it all again if they play the way they did today at the Rock. Also, I don't think I have seen a cleaner football team than Nova. No dirty penalties, no bad mouthing the opponent, no mocking ASU players,no arguing with the refs, even when they had a huge lead. Scuzur showed excellent sportsmanship after every play as I saw him constantly helping up ASU defenders, even after he had just shredded them for 10 yards. Nova played like they have been here before.....I was thoroughly impressed with their play on the field as well as their sportsmanship in victory. Good luck in the Semi's.

Good question. Guess the coaching staff just felt some momentum and thought 4th and goal was do-able. Can't say I blame them...Jordan was wide open on 3rd down but the pass was way off. Overall, I think that's just the story of the day...Deandre not making plays in the pass (throwing high all day, into a lot of coverage) or the run (pulling it down when there was a wall in front of him, not running for the yardage when in space). Not sure what the deal was out there with him, but his offensive coordinators weren't helping him out a lot either.

Congrats to 'Nova and their coaching staff...great adjustments made to take the game over, which isn't an easy thing to do once ASU gets a little momentum like they did in the first quarter. Matt Szczur is the real deal...his absence has got to be a major reason they ever had 4 Ls on the year.

AlphaSigMD

Villanova was obviously the better team today. All you ASU haters out there who want to make this into an "ASU sucks" moment really do a disservice to how well Nova played, especially during the first half.

That being said, ASU had a number of opportunities that they could not capitalize on (Turnover, 2 kicks out of bounds), and that sloppy play was not compatible with winning a game against a quality opponent like Nova. In addition, the play calling throughout the first half was suspect at best.

I was also disappointed with the lack of discipline by the officiating crew. In addition to a number of questionable reviewable calls that went against ASU, the officials let the Nova O-line hold all day and allowed open season for defensive holding/pass interference in the secondary. In addition, the linesman took away critical yard(s) on a number of plays by marking the ball short of where the ASU player extended the ball. On two of those occasions ASU ended up turning the ball over on downs. I think these mistakes had a way of magnifying ASU's miscues and shortcomings, but I can't blame them for ASU losing. Nova was the better team.

In addition, I was very disappointed in the ASU fanbase for leaving the stadium early. The seniors on the squad deserve better than to walk off the field in front of empty stands.

Good luck to Villanova in the rest of your season. As much as it pains me to say it, you deserved to win the game today, plain and simple. Enjoy the win as ASU will certainly be back next year as a title contender. Hopefully this game will stick with the team and give them a years worth of incentive/spite in order to carry them to championship next year.

What a great display by Szczur. It will be interesting to see where he goes next. Had he been healthy all year, we might have not met Nova until Texas. Not to mention that ASU never seemed to show up today.

I'll be pulling for SoCon as long as we're in it. If Wofford and GaSo fall, I'll pull for Nova to repeat. Why? Because they are a great team and I didn't follow this thread closely. What a display of jerkiness.

After reading through this entire 61 page thread, this is the best post on it, theasushow is a first class fan to post this after losing out of the playoffs, there should be more fans with his sportmanship on the AGS myself included

Appalachian State is a great football team but Villanova was the better team today. ASU is clearly the class of the SoCon but they couldn't contain one Mr. Matt Szcsur.

The most entertaining part of the game was the ASU fan screaming "break his legs!" referring to Szcsur, after the broadcasters praised him all day long for donating his bone marrow.

obviously im a nova fan and love matt szczur but i am getting tired of hearing about the bone marrow thing so much. i think we heard that more times then we saw the playoff bracket. Sure he saved a life, but even matt himself downplays the whole thing and doesnt talk about it much

Villanova was better no doubt, I do think the refs were a little cheesy at times though with ball spots and that was one of the worst calls I've ever seen on that roughing the passer, he tackled him as he threw it, it would of been impossible for him to stop and that was a point in the game where we were building some momentum, it went from 2&10 on the 23 to 1st&10 on the 38 or something like that...terrible call. And even after that we had chances but couldn't convert. The play calling was as bad as I've seen it all year, we were most successful when we went to the middle of the field and DP would drop straight back, but no let him role out or throw one in the end zone to Quick, and that play works a lot but it was starting to get predictable. Villy was better, we got man handled on both lines all day. I'm not surprised we lost, but I'm surprised that we got outplayed as bad as we did.

Oh well, here comes the grueling off season where all you can do is think about what you could of done differently and countdown till kickoff again. It was a great season and I'm already preparing for Blacksburg.

Go Apps.

I was sitting near the "break his leg" guy. He was screaming all sorts of stuff during the game. He left when the going got tough and I'm glad he did.

We got out-coached big time today. The players had heart and the fans tried to will them on, but the coaching staff screwed the pooch big time today.

Nova played like world beaters and smacked us in the face early. Congrats to them. I'm 100% sure they're going to Frisco.

I wouldn't say it's 100% that we're going to Frisco. How could you possibly say that? I have a feeling everyone is going to think the next game is a "Gimmie" for Nova but it's not. We traveled from Texas to N.C. to either North Dakota or Washington. That kind of traveling takes a toll on you. Plus after playing such an emotional game in a bigtime FCS environment, it is sometimes tough for teams to bounce back the following week.

Gulp, not sure I should be saying this....and I have been absolutely THRILLED in the way Presley played this season...couldn't have asked for more. But today I felt like was the only game this year where we really missed having AE at QB, Presley just looked rattled. His stats turned out to be okay, but the majority of those were in garbage time when Nova was playing a prevent defense. But not taking anything away from DP, if you told me before the season ASU would go 10-3 I would have been very skeptical.

It's not holding when one side is much bigger than the other and just keep pushing them backwards. That's just football.

I guess grabbing a jersey from behind is not holding?????

Dude, you're seriously going to pull the refs excuse? You got beat. You're a top-tier class act program who will be here next year. Just quit complaining about the refs - Nova's offensive line dominated App's defensive line in this game.

better then channeling his inner adam james if you want to go back that far. I sit in SF right by the kicking next and id watch him schmozing with the cheerleaders when he should have been warming up for a potential field goal

haha that's not fair. Adam tore his quad and kick offs were not his strong suit. as for marcoux. He was better at blasting it as far as possible than trying to place it in the corner like we were instructed to do. I had the same issues.

Nova's offensive line dominated App's defensive line in this game.

It seemed like Villanova started running downfield in the second quarter. There's probably holding on every offensive play so blaming that as the reason for a loss is insufficient.

theasushow above mentioned missing AE for the first time all season because Presley "just looked rattled." I thought the same thing. He's got a LOT of physical talent and he may use this game as motivation for next year. But today, something just seemed off about him.

Presley needs to become a pocket passer first and running QB second. To be honest, Moses (even with all of his turnovers against us) looked like the better QB than Presley against us. While you can't take anything away from Presley's speed, his passing just looked bad. He reminds me of Vick a little bit. Vick is a MUCH better QB now than before - now that he is a pass-first, run-second QB.

Entertaining game, Villanova just happened to play better than App on this day. Szczur play had to rank in the top 10 of playoff performances...I don't have a list made up but if I did I would have to include Randy Moss of Marshall, he destroyed my Hens. xbawlingx Might be a good thread...Top 10 Playoff Performances.

Hey App, time to take sorta revenge. App right now playing another small Catholic school (Big East, just like 'Nova), the Georgetown Hoyas!

and today????

First of ALL - Congrats to Nova Nation. You out choached and played APP!

Secondly, I had nothing to lose in this game. I road my bike to watch Nova games as a kid 40years ago. Watched Delaware games 30years ago. I am still a Philly guy.

Third, The tribe lost 1 week earlier so you don't count.

Fourth, I am so HAPPY the Villanova fans i tailgated with had a GREAT time visiting THE ROCK.

And fifth, My comment was addressing the NATIONAL exposure of FCS Football and APP was worlds ahead of Nova. That being said if NOVA wins BACK TO BACK Championships and moves to Big EAST. They will be on the map in Philly and nationally.

Finally, Good luck to Nova and Andy Talley where ever you play. You deserve more support in Philly !!!!!!

Thanks to all the App St. fans and football family, you were all gracious hosts and most gracious in defeat. Coach Moore and his wife especially. I have never seen so many fans congratulate the team and our fans while leaving the stadium, very classy. Maybe it is the southern hospitality, but that never happens in the northeast. The Rock is pretty amazing for the FCS level, I hope I never have to go back there.

You know...I saw the same thing. It did look like there was a lot of holding from 'Nova xbangx, but I said this from the student section, where I observed said holding and I'll say it here. It doesn't matter if they're holding. The game goes on, play through it.

Presley had a good year. I don't think you could've asked for more from a QB replacing Armanti Edwards. Honestly, I feel confident about him going into next year. I don't think that ASU is done.

I never thought I'd say this, and I'm going to wash my hands THOROUGHLY after typing this, but I guess I have to now.......xbangx. Go Eagles. And GSU fans that go to Delaware for the game, don't eat the chicken. Something about blue chicken is gritty and disgusting. xnodx

Jerry Moore and his wife are as genuine and nice people as God could make. I am glad you saw the best APP has to show. APP State as a family is a great place. We do have a few idiots but as a Philly raised adult, I think there is something very special about most APP fans, town folks, players, coaches, and administration.

I invite you back anytime you want. I always have 2 extra tickets on the 45 yard line in section 111. Just let me know when your in Carolina.

Congrats to Nova on moving on

ASU had the chances, but just couldn't capitalize

The difference in the game was the the trenches. Say what you want about Szcuzr, but the best player in FCS is that LT #71 for Nova. Do people realize the offense goes through this guy! There were a couple long runs where I watcher #71 block at least 3 guys. Truth be told this game could have been a lot uglier just based off running behind that guy every single play.

On Offense ASU did have some problems later on and Pressley had his worst game at QB since ECU last year, but our offensive line was 2 yards in the backfield on every play.

This game was won in the trenches by Villanova and I am confident they are the favorite to repeat. ASU may have the best skill players in FCS, but it doesn't matter if you can't hold your own on the lines.

I remember one play against UNH this year where Nova ran a quick screen play from their own 20 yard line, and it went incomplete (the play must have been like 3 seconds long) and Ijalana ran a defensive lineman to the 45 yardline. He is truly a beast. Nova was very fortunate to get him. Without him (and Klouser too - Ijalana's counterpart on that leftside of the line), Nova would be nowhere near as good as they are now.

jlcharles
December 13th, 2010, 09:30 PM
One of the knocks on him coming from the scouts was his run blocking. I'm pretty sure he's been working on that.

Was the UNH game the one where he got a PF for blocking a guy practically into the stands?

Notice that they move him around too. He'll line up at TE on the right side at times as well.
