Lindsey Jacobellis just lost the gold medal in the Womens Snowboard Cross because of showboating. She had a HUGE lead over the rest of the field, looked over her shoulder and seeing her lead decided to do a 'stylish big air' move on the last big jump. Result was landing off balance and falling. By the time she recovered and got going, again, the Swiss girl passed her. She gets the silver, but what a lesson in just keeping your priority--get the job done. She has no one to blame but her self. But at the same time it's such a shame--all that hard work thrown away....:(

Hmmm, I don't know. In snowboarding having fun by doing crazy stuff is why people do it in the first place. I'd argue that taking snowboarding too seriously destroys that which makes the sport what it is. Competing for the joy of it - I kind of wish more sports were like that.

Don't disagree in a general sense. My son snowboards and it is a joyous time, BUT, this wasn't Sunday spin down the slope. This was the Olympics--a once in a lifetime opportunity and something she trained for, for a long time. The money, time and sacrifice. To me, this is one great lesson for everyone. I'm sure this will haunt her the rest of her life...

I can't believe that she even tried to deny showboating when asked after the run. She claimed that she felt off balance and grabbed the board to help her regain balance.

Later in the interview with Costas she basically acknowledged she did; saying she was all pumped up and 'got lost in the moment'...Discipline seems to be the one big element missing from some of these athletes. The articles in today's sports page contained quotes from the coaches and other snowboard 'crossers' who basically agreed that they couldn't believe she would take such a risk in that situation. The replays showed that she made a delliberate attempt to perform a maneuver called, "method air".

Lindsey Jacobellis and Leon Lett now share the same sentence...
I attribute it to the snow boarding culture though... surfers on snow..

Pard4, wasn't old Leon the guy who tried to cover (why?) a blocked FG on fourth down on Thanksgiving Day 1993 in the Dallas-Miami game (also remember it was sleeting most of the game and an inch formed on the field)

Leon Lett was a defensive linemen for the Cowboys when they played the Bills in the Super Bowl sometime in the early/mid 90's. The Cowboys were winning no problem and were on their way to breaking the record for most points scored in the SB. Lett picked up a fumble and looked to score the record breaking TD. He started show boating too early and a very fast Don Bebe caught him and knocked it out of his hands causing a touchback. Cowboys never got into the endzone again and the record was not broken.

You guys don't even understand how EASY the move she did was. The chick in second place did the same exact thing. Often times grabbing your board DOES help you stick the landing. I do the same grab she did all the time, and I'm nowhere near as talented. She just got very, very unlucky and I feel terrible for her because people are acting like she busted out something crazy. She didn't. I don't mean to be an asshole, but what she did is nowhere close to ol' Leon. And you can say whatever you want about the snowboarders, but take their medals away, and it's been one damn sorry Olympic showing for the U.S.

I can remember when the US was lucky just to get a medal. Like the title of the thread says, Learned a Lesson. I agree not even close to Lett. She still won a Silver doughnut. This is a great Olympics once you get by the media hype(BS).
