CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The gap between success and failure can be thinner than a young man’s spine.
Billy Hallgren has measured it, personally and painfully.
Northern Iowa’s senior kicker knows that a one-inch mistake on the snap or the hold will send a field goal try veering wide. Hallgren also understands that a back injury, such as the one he suffered long before the 2010 season began, can consume the days and weeks he needs to polish his craft.
Yet, as UNI gets ready to meet Lehigh in Saturday’s opening round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, Hallgren’s healthy. And he’s drawn a long line of accomplishments in his final season as a Panther.
