CHICAGO - The Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection sees Delaware remain on top in the GPI rankings to end the regular season, despite their overtime loss to No. 7 Villanova this past weekend.
The top four of the GPI were awarded seeds in the FCS playoffs - Delaware and William & Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association, Appalachian State of the Southern Conference, and Eastern Washington of the Big Sky Conference, though not in the exact same order that they appear in the GPI. Stephen F. Austin (No. 5) did not get a seed in the playoffs, but do host the defending national champions Villanova (No. 7) in an intriguing second-round matchup.

Are you kidding? The top indicator of at-large selections?
This is 3 days LATE and SC State was ranked 47th in the GPI and Liberty and Jaxsonville were eligible and ranked higher.
How on God's green earth can anyone publish this with a straight face?

To be fair, in the non-quoted part of the article, they acknowledged that twice, and implied that Jacksonville or Liberty deserved a bid over SC State.

Maybe a historical bias should be added to the GPI....

Don't bother with that, MacThor. Reading doesn't seem to be its strong suit (see "The top indicator" when that isn't what the GPI article says). It also seems to think that the GPI can come out DAYS BEFORE the polls come out. How on God's green earth can anyone post that with a straight face? xsmhx

By the way, SE, I've been wondering why the GPI factors 5 computers against 3 human polls for the total (giving the computers 63% input).
Wouldn't it be fairer to have it 50-50?
Just wondering, I don't recall any discussion on this.
P.S. gobble gobble

No good deed goes unpunished.

It's not 100% perfect.

Like anything else its all opinion. even the computers have an opionated programer that has to weight certain points in the algorythm. the GPI just takes inot account a bunch of opinions. You win on the field and the polls take care of themselves.

The use of the three polls skews the final numbers since only the top twenty five teams in each poll get their actual score, the remaining teams get a default value of 26. One thing that has struck me is the differences in opinion in both the polls and the computer rankings. Bethune-Cookman is this week's poster child. In the spreadsheet this week their numbers range from 9 (coaches poll) to 91 (Sagarin). Even if you just look at just the computer rankings they vary from 34-91! The same sort of variablity shows up week after week in the Massey rankings.
