The University of South Carolina has announced future football dates with four in-state Division I-AA opponents. The future schedules include home dates with Wofford, South Carolina State, The Citadel and Furman University.
"You always look for balance in your schedule," said Carolina Athletics Director Eric Hyman. "With a 12-game regular season in effect, we want to schedule seven home games each year. We would rather play opponents within the state that people are familiar with and can identify with, than play a school with no local name recognition. Financially, it's a win-win situation for everyone in the state of South Carolina."
As previously announced, Wofford will play in Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006. In addition, the Terriers will visit Williams-Brice Stadium on Sept. 20, 2008 and again on Sept. 15, 2012. The Gamecocks and Terriers have met 20 times on the gridiron in a series that dates back to 1895, but just once since 1957. USC has won 16 of those meetings, including the last 13 in a row.
History will be made when South Carolina and South Carolina State meet for the first time ever on football field on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007. The Bulldogs will also make the trip from Orangeburg to Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.
USC and The Citadel will meet for the 50th time when the two schools get together in Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009. The Bulldogs will also visit Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. Carolina owns a 39-7-3 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1905. The teams most recently met in 1990, with The Citadel posting a 38-35 win.
Traditional Division I-AA power Furman University is slated to make a pair of appearances in Columbia, first on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, then again on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014. The teams have played 47 times previously, with USC holding a 26-20-1 advantage in a series that dates back to 1892. The teams met most recently in 1982.
