The University of South Carolina has announced future football dates with four in-state Division I-AA opponents. The future schedules include home dates with Wofford, South Carolina State, The Citadel and Furman University.
"You always look for balance in your schedule," said Carolina Athletics Director Eric Hyman. "With a 12-game regular season in effect, we want to schedule seven home games each year. We would rather play opponents within the state that people are familiar with and can identify with, than play a school with no local name recognition. Financially, it's a win-win situation for everyone in the state of South Carolina."

As previously announced, Wofford will play in Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006. In addition, the Terriers will visit Williams-Brice Stadium on Sept. 20, 2008 and again on Sept. 15, 2012. The Gamecocks and Terriers have met 20 times on the gridiron in a series that dates back to 1895, but just once since 1957. USC has won 16 of those meetings, including the last 13 in a row.
History will be made when South Carolina and South Carolina State meet for the first time ever on football field on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007. The Bulldogs will also make the trip from Orangeburg to Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.
USC and The Citadel will meet for the 50th time when the two schools get together in Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009. The Bulldogs will also visit Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. Carolina owns a 39-7-3 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1905. The teams most recently met in 1990, with The Citadel posting a 38-35 win.
Traditional Division I-AA power Furman University is slated to make a pair of appearances in Columbia, first on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, then again on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014. The teams have played 47 times previously, with USC holding a 26-20-1 advantage in a series that dates back to 1892. The teams met most recently in 1982. Here are the future dates against the in-state I-AA opponents. All games are scheduled for Columbia. Game times will be announced at a later date:

Sat. Sept. 16, 2006 Wofford
Sat. Sept. 15, 2007 South Carolina State
Sat. Sept. 20, 2008 Wofford
Sat. Oct. 3, 2009 The Citadel
Sat. Oct. 2, 2010 Furman
Sat. Sept. 17, 2011 South Carolina State
Sat. Sept. 15, 2012 Wofford
Sat. Sept. 21, 2013 The Citadel
Sat. Sept. 20, 2014 Furman

Smart move by Gamecocks...

Settling their "12th game" for the next few years and doing it with in-states...

Is it just me or are the Trojans of Southern California the only USC when talking college football? That's what came to my mind. Of course, I don't think we'll ever see SC playing I-AA's

I totall agree, I thought it was about Southern Cal too. Either way, sorry to say but the I-AA team is most likely going to get stomped. xcoffeex

Not around South Carolina, it's not. But there's many schools with the same acronym. :)

I didn't see it in the initial post but here's the money figures:

The teams will receive a $230,000 guarantee for games through 2010. The guarantee will go up to $250,000 starting in 2011, sports information director Steve Fink said.

I am somewhat surprised the Big Chickens didn't want to play the Little Chickens from Conway. They could have billed it as the "KFC Fried Chicken Classic"

Must the the USC release becasue it failed to mention that we beat them in 1982 28-23. They have been too scared to play us since.

Does Furman, in its releases the weeks of the ASU games, mention the fact that Furman is 2-5 since 2000?:read: xcoffeex

Glad to see USC doing this. It was understandable when all I-AA's did not count toward bowls. They might as well share the wealth with in-state I-AA's.

The protocal normally involves the all time record vs each other and recent series.

"Carolina" in 49 states = University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
"USC" in 49 states = University of Southern Cal.

I married into a Gamecock family and it took me over two years to get used to them using the references above.

I honestly think that the I-AA's would get the best of University of South Carolina. I just wished that it would be THIS yearxcoffeex !! We(SCSU) have an excellent class coming this year, including transfers, and they are still coming in. I am great friends with "Sports Information Director" Bill Hamilton. Has given me profiles of new recruits that will turn some heads this year. SCSU, Furman, and CCU will be great during these series...hey, it might even spread to more states. Add Wofford in the mix as well as Clemson(who hasn't been all that spectacular the past 5 seasons) to make it an even 6 teams in this series. xcoffeex

I would be more than happy to let Clemson into this party.

What kills me is that, since the 1999 season, only one Furman team has failed to make the playoffs; the 2003 team, who went 6-5. That was the team that got a shot at Clemson, and was therefore the example of Furman football that the uneducated South Carolinian got.

Even so, there were a lot of stained orange pants in the stadium that day, as Clemson survived with a 28-17 victory. They're very lucky that they missed Ingle, Jerome, and co. by one year.

More on topic: I'm somewhat of a South Carolina fan, but I hope that every 1-AA team that walks into Williams-Bryce over the coming years makes a meal out of the Gamecocks.
