His career, records broken, and reputation look like they could earn him this year’s Payton. He now has over 30 touchdowns and has thrown for a whopping 3100 yards. This is still not a definite as anyone in my top five could possibly vault to number one next week with a big performance.

2. RB Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington, Jr.- 159 carries, 1236 yds, 11 TD, 7.8ypc, 137.3 yds/gm, 17 catches, 287 yds, 16.9ypc, 2 TD, 3 PR, 28 yds, 9.3avg, 13 KR, 255 yds, 19.6avg in 9 games.

Jones would win this award if he had not been hurt. I’m convinced of it. When healthy he is dominant week in and week out. He is the most explosive back I have seen this year. He is versatile as he can return kicks, does a good job of receiving out of the backfield, and he can carry the load 20-25 times a game.

3. OT Ben Ijalana, Villanova, Sr.

Ijalana won’t finish this high but he should. He has been dominant all season long and is the sole reason directors and GMs have come in to Villanova. He will end his career as a three-time first-team All-CAA selection and two-time first-team All-American. Ijalana is the best offensive lineman I have seen in FCS in 10 years.

4. RB Nate Eachus, Colgate, Jr.- 287 carries, 1667 yds, 19 TD, 5.8ypc, 166.7 yds/gm, 14 catches, 132 yds, 9.4ypc in 10 games.

Eachus has been impressive all season long leading the nation in rushing and will likely surpass 20 rushing touchdowns, a rare feat, this week.

5. RB Henry Harris, Southeast Missouri State, Sr.- 285 carries, 1627 yds, 17 TD, 5.7ypc, 147.9 yds/gm, 18 catches, 182 yds, 10.1ypc, 1 TD in 11 games.

Harris has not gotten the respect he deserves. While he is not big he is fast, quick, and explosive. He is the sole reason SEMO is ranked in the top 10 because without him this offense would not be nearly as effective.

Holmes almost solidified this award over the last two weeks and should walk away with it if he has another huge week coming up. He makes plays in the run and pass game and is a violent hitter feared by CAA quarterbacks.

2. LB J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington, Sr.- 117 TT, 10 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 FF in 10 games.

Sherritt has led EWU to a national ranking of third and leads the team in tackles. He brings a name reputation and has been a playmaker in the run and pass game.

3. DT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton, Sr.- 90 TT, 14 TFL, 2 sacks, 4 QBH, 2 FR, 1 FF in 9 games.

While the MEAC is not a great league Ellis is the most physically imposing player in FCS and would be first on the list if not for the league and lack of gaudy sack numbers. If not for his off field issues he would be a likely second or third round draft choice in the spring.

4. LB Matt Evans, New Hampshire, Soph.- 128 TT, 8 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 1 PBU, 1 QBH, 2 FR, 2 FF in 10 games.

Evans has been hot the last few weeks. He is tied for second nationally in tackles per game (12.80) and he has made plays picking off passes and wreaking havoc in the backfield. His play has set him up nicely to become a front runner for the 2011 award.

5. DT Brent Russell, Georgia Southern, Soph.- 49 TT, 14.5 TFL, 6 sacks, 2 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 FR in 10 games.

Russell not only earned a spot in the top 20 but has vaulted into my top five with his dominating performances the last two weeks. He is a major part of the most impressive defensive tackle group I have seen in some time in FCS.

He is double teamed on every snap, but he still disrupts many, many plays whether he makes the tackle or not. He absolutely owned App St., Navy, Elon and WCU. Teams that run with any success against GSU do so by running away from Russell. He may not win the award this season, but he'll be at the top of the Buchanan list for the next three years before heading to the NFL, and if the voters look at more than stats (he'll never have the tackle numbers of DE or LB), he'll win the award before he's done.

He certainly deserved it based on the last two weeks. As I have said before we have to let things play out. He earned his way on definitely. No matter what he does this week he will stay on the top 20.

Ronnie Fouch had a pretty solid game with 4 passing touchdowns 290 yards and also 31 yards rushing...Fouch also punted regularly for the Sycamores and placed three inside the 20...reason why he isn't on anyone's lists for the Payton award? The guy has thrown 24 touchdown passes this season and has led Indiana State to their first winning season in 13 years... Just a question...I know in the past he was on the payton watch list....

I can understand that you are not aware of Terrell Rennie.....but you will find out who he is soon....

Upon further review...its more amazing that Kyle Minnett is on the list and not Rennie. Rennie has more Rushing yds and Rushing TDs than Minnett. Also consider that Rennie had split QB duty for the first 5 games. Imagine IF he had 20 more snaps a game for the first 5 games....

Jones is a complete player as is Minett. Unless a team runs the triple option the QB needs to have more than just rushing stats. You also need to remember that Rennie is a junior but he seems younger.

Part of putting this list together is to put the 20 players on with the best chance at getting votes. Minett and Jones would get more votes than Rennie guaranteed because of reputation and the fact they are better overall players. Rennie will be great as long as he continues to steadily improve and as I have said before he is a definite guy on the preseason list next year.

Minett and Jones would get more votes than Rennie guaranteed because of reputation and the fact they are better overall players. Rennie will be great as long as he continues to steadily improve and as I have said before he is a definite guy on the preseason list next year.

Sorry for the error, corrected it. First year guy. He really plays like a freshman or sophomore when it comes to passing. He needs a lot of work in that aspect. Those 8 INTs are quite a lot for a guy who runs much more than he throws. I might add him next week but like I said he needs to have a big game. When I saw him play I thought he was a very good runner but nowhere near the passer that he needs to be in order to become that great player. I really hope and expect to see an improved passer next year who challenges to be an All-American.

I try not to add a guy coming off a bad week. Brent Russell earned a spot on in the last two weeks for sure.

That is definitely understandable. His rocky start and lack of previous reputation hurt his chances of being in the hunt this year but he will have some rep coming into 2011 and should be among the front runners.

I saw on another board....and I'm too lazy to sign up....you mentioned Rennie's Passing isn't very good this year....well his passing is #17 in the country and a full 13 points higher than an award winner in 07 we shouldn't compare rennie too....

Iowa State, Southern Illinois, and Illinois State. I know his best game passing was Missouri State because he had 3 TDs and completed 80% of his passes.

I never said Rennie was not good this year. I just said his passing was not very good and that while he is a good player he was not quite consistent enough this year to warrant putting on the top 20 for the Payton quite yet. He is not on the official Payton watch either. He has a 8-8 TD-INT ratio and is completing just 57% of his passes. The magic number is 60%. Like I said, he is a good player just don't think he should be among the top 20 for the Payton Award yet. He will be next year for sure!

Especially when you think what the numbers would be with 20 more snaps a game over the first 5 games. The kid is also playing with an Oline that has 5 new starters, a Sr, Jr, 2 sophs and Freshman. Its not like its Eric Sanders playing behind 2 drafted Tackles in Rinehart and Keith....

I can understand where you are coming from. But one thing to remember. Every team around the country believes they have a player that should definitely be under consideration. We have to make the tough decisions as to who makes the cut and who doesn't. The smallest reason can be why. Another thing you have to remember is that team success, reputation, stats, level of competition, consistency, all-around play, etc. all are factored in to it. Leaving him off is not saying he is a bad player. I don't think people realize how good a top 20 offensive player in FCS is. Shoot, over half of those guys will get a shot in the NFL and every single one of them is a difference maker on their team.

With all of this said I was looking at the MVFC today and I fully expect WIU QB Matt Barr to be first team and second team will be interesting. I would probably take Rennie but he has stiff competition with Ronnie Fouch and Matt Brown both having good seasons as well. With Rennie playing behind a whole new line you have to expect him to improve his numbers heavily. If he is not on the preseason list next year then I would definitely raise flags. I keep looking at the list and don't see a player that could be justified removing to put him on. There is a lot of talent out there so like I said there will be deserving players getting snubbed on both sides.
