MY TOP 5
There is a shake up with DeAndre Presley falling all the way from 1 to out of the top 5 in just two weeks. It just goes to show how fluid this thing is week by week. Consistency is one of the most important things and I believe this group is a consistent group that might not have much reputation from last year but has had the best seasons of anyone out there. I gave the SWAC a lot of love this week with two very deserving candidates!
1. QB Matt Barr, Western Illinois, Sr.- 164-262, 2438 yds, 23 TD, 3 INT, 62.6%, 167.4 pass eff., 270.9 yds/gm, 72 carries, 398 yds, 5.5ypc, 5 TD in 9 games.
Barr has WIU 6-3 and eyeing a playoff berth. He has been hot the last few weeks with an impressive 28 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He is second nationally in pass efficiency and eighth in passing yards per game. Don’t be fooled though because this race is long from over and the final two weeks will be key in deciding this race.
2. RB Henry Harris, Southeast Missouri State, Sr.- 264 carries, 1493 yds, 16 TD, 5.7ypc, 149.3 yds/gm, 18 catches, 182 yds, 10.1ypc, 1 TD in 10 games.
Harris leads a hot SEMO team that has won 9 straight games, ranked #7 in the TSN poll, and he is second nationally in rushing yards per game. Harris has been brilliant this year and consistent proving he can be the workhorse and provide a big play with an impressive 5.7 yards per carry.
3. RB Nate Eachus, Colgate, Jr.- 267 carries, 1507 yds, 16 TD, 5.6ypc, 167.4 yds/gm, 13 catches, 115 yds, 8.8ypc in 9 games.
Eachus leads the nation in rushing yards per game (167.44). His season is reminiscent of former Walter Payton Award Winner Jamaal Branch as Eachus has been nothing short of brilliant all year long. His team’s average season and lack of much production in the receiving game are the main reasons why he is not higher.
4. RB Frank Warren, Grambling State, Sr.- 197 carries, 1370 yards, 15 TD, 7.0ypc, 152.2 yds/gm, 17 catches, 142 yds, 8.4ypc, 1 TD, 2 KR, 33 yds in 9 games.
Warren ranks third nationally in rushing yards per game and has been a big play back averaging 7.0 yards per game. GSU’s success definitely helps him and it would not be surprising to see him finish as high as third in the balloting.
5. QB Casey Therriault, Jackson State, Jr.- 217-385, 2941 yds, 24 TD, 8 INT, 56.4%, 136.9 pass eff., 326.8 yds/gm, 80 carries, 22 yds, 7 TD in 9 games.
Therriault is a great story and his season only adds to how impressive his comeback has been. With 31 touchdowns it is hard to leave him off the top five at this point.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
QB Sean Brackett, Columbia, Soph.- 134-224, 1689 yds, 17 TD, 5 INT, 59.8%, 143.7 pass eff., 211.1 yds/gm, 114 carries, 377 yds, 3.3ypc, 2 TD in 8 games.
QB B.J. Coleman, Chattanooga, Jr.- 188-328, 2467 yds, 22 TDs, 12 INT, 57.3%, 135.3 pass eff., 274.1 yds/gm, 35 carries, -1 yds, 4 TD in 9 games.
QB Thomas DeMarco, Old Dominion, Jr.- 191-334, 2200 yds, 19 TD, 11 INT, 57.2%, 124.7 pass eff., 244.4 yds/gm, 106 carries, 361 yds, 3.4ypc, 8 TD in 9 games.
QB Justin Roper, Montana, Sr.- 143-231, 1539 yds, 18 TD, 8 INT, 61.9%, 136.7 pass eff., 171.0 yds/gm, 40 carries, 93 yds, 2.3ypc, 1 TD in 9 games.
QB Brad Sorensen, Southern Utah, Soph.- 227-337, 2729, 19 TD, 4 INT, 67.4%, 151.6 pass eff., 272.9 yds/gm, 57 carries, 25 yds, 2 TD in 10 games.
RB Jordan Brown, Bryant, Soph.- 219 carries, 1173 yds, 5.4ypc, 13 TD, 130.3 yds/gm, 10 catches, 129 yds, 12.9ypc, 1 TD, 3 PR, 144 yds, 48.0avg, 2 TD, 9 KR, 197 yds, 21.9avg in 9 games.
RB Jamaine Cook, Youngstown State, Soph., 220 carries, 1199 yds, 5.4ypc, 10 TD, 119.9 yds/gm, 25 catches, 219 yds, 8.8ypc, 1 TD in 10 games.
RB Gino Gordon, Harvard, Sr.- 133 carries, 913 yds, 6.9ypc, 7 TD, 114.1 yds/gm, 13 catches, 119 yds, 9.2ypc in 7 games.

RB Nick Schwieger, Dartmouth, Jr.- 189 carries, 942 yds, 9 TD, 5.0avg, 134.6 yds/gm, 22 catches, 156 yds, 7.1ypc in 7 games.
WR Chris Summers, Liberty, Jr.- 69 catches, 954 yds, 14 TD, 13.8ypc, 106.0 yds/gm in 9 games.
WR Raymond Webber, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Sr.- 80 catches, 1178 yds, 10 TD, 14.7ypc, 130.9 yds/gm in 9 games.

MY TOP 5
This year’s race is still wide open but Tyler Holmes could help make this pick much easier if he keeps up his play from the last two weeks. With that said this race is still wide open and anyone could truly take charge and claim this award over the next two weeks.
1. LB Tyler Holmes, UMASS, Jr.- 91 TT, 11 TFL, 5 sacks, 5 INT/returned two for TD, 1 PBU, 2 FF in 9 games.
This was a very tough selection with three players worthy of the top spot at this point but nobody has been better the last two weeks than Holmes whose two interceptions returned for touchdowns on Saturday vaulted him to the top spot.
2. DE Ameet Pall, Wofford, Jr.- 43 TT, 19.5 TFL, 12.5 sacks, 6 QBH, 1 FR, 1 FF in 9 games.
Pall is a player I have got to watch recently and while he is not overly big nor that fast he just makes plays. He has a good motor, is well coached as he plays with good technique, and doesn’t miss many tackles. His 19.5 tackles for loss are second nationally while his 12.5 sacks are good for first.
3. LB J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington, Sr.- 106 TT, 9 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH in 9 games.
Sherrit was the preseason front runner and has not been a disappointment as he will definitely be a first-team All-American and could still vault to first on my ballot if he can produce big games here to close out the season. What has made his season so impressive with the lack of big numbers in tackles and tackles for loss is the fact he has made plays in the passing game with picks and breakups and wreaked havoc when blitzing producing 2.5 sacks.
4. DT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton, Sr.- 84 TT, 14 TFL, 2 sacks, 4 QBH, 2 FR, 1 FF in 8 games.
Ellis is perhaps the most dominating player in the nation because he can truly take over games when he wants to. He would be first on my ballot if he had a few more sacks and production in other areas besides the big three (TT, TFL, sacks).
5. LB Keith Pough, Howard, Soph.- 84 TT, 24 TFL, 7 sacks, 3 PBU, 5 QBH, 1 FR, 3 FF in 9 games.
I know Pough isn’t on the official watch list and I know many of you have never heard of him. With that said I have to honor him at least one time this year with his incredible season for Howard. This potential future draft pick has great size (6’3, 235), leads the nation in tackles for loss (24), and is twelfth in sacks (7). For those wondering where this kid has come from he is not new to impressive play with 57 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and five hurries in 10 games last year.
PLAYERS TO WATCH

I know he doesn't have the gaudy numbers that some of the other guys do, but remember what happened when Grimes met up with Payton finalist Deji Karim last year in the playoffs...
Grimes - 30 carries, 133 yards, 4.4 ypc
Karim - 12 carries, 27 yards, 2.2 ypc
I don't think there is a better RB in FCS

Keith Pough should at least be on the Buchannan List by the end of the season.

You can't judge two players based on the same game because they didn't face the same defense. W&M had two draft picks on that defensive line that Karim saw every play while SIU has one future draft pick in a CB, which has little effect on what a RB does.
Karim is a special player. He has been solid when he got on the field for the Jags.
Grimes is a great player but based on play this season I think Taiwan Jones is better. Both backs have been hurt but Jones is so fast, explosive, and quick that I think he is the best I have seen. When he is healthy he is the fastest of the top backs I have seen and he makes big time plays. Grimes is a solid player who hits the hole hard and can do it all though so I'm not saying he is not among the best. Both are great players.
What did you think of Jones when you saw him? I figured he would run 4.35-4.40 while Grimes is probably a 4.50 type guy.

Pough is a beast. Big kid who runs well. He has been wreaking havoc on offenses all year long. I wish Howard was a playoff team because I want to see him against one of these high powered CAA or SoCon offenses.

Getting kind of tired of your obvious slight of Steve Valentino. HE IS STILL ON THE LIST. His team is 9-1 and will probably finish at 10-1. He has been PFL player of the week two times, and finished off a drive against Drake this past Saturday that was on ESPN. Give me a break....

Here's my second of your Tyler Holmes selection at #1. His sense of where to go at the snap is exceptional and he is a good finisher. On his two picks for td's this week, it looked like he was the intended receiver.

On that first INT... he looked like he baited the qb making him think the guy was open and then closed really fast for the int. I believe Holmes will be a Safety in the NFL. Prob too small to play LBer but def has the skills for the next level. Granted he plays the same over our last two games... he will be the clear choice for the buchanan. He leads most if not all DBs on the list in INTs, has more sacks and tackles for loss then DLinemen and is 2nd in tackles for all LBers. The two TDs off the INTs only put him over the top.
BTW quick question... on the DB stats... Why are return yards listed for buchanan stats? I wouldnt think return yards would matter.

Only reason I dropped him is because I added Josh McGregor. With Jacksonville being the team in the rankings and McGregor posting better numbers I had to give him that spot. McGregor has been productive before this year just like Valentino and is outperforming him this year as well. McGregor has 32 TDs while Valentino has 21 TDs. McGregor has 172.7 pass eff. while Valentino has 135.3 pass eff. Valentino has 261.9 yards per game while McGregor has 287.9 yards per game. McGregor should be on the official list over Valentino basing it on this year's play.

He is definitely too small for LB, not just height but too light, but would make an ideal safety at 5'11, 220 pounds. He has good size for a strong safety.

Without going into too much details, you are comparing apples with oranges.JU's style is completely different than Dayton's. Dayton has a run & pass offense to take time off the clock from the word go. when a large lead in there the starters are taken out of the game.take the Valpariso and Central St. games Valentino played a TOTAL of 3 quarters for the 2 games. JU is a pass happy offence trying to score a ton of points.hence the 86-7 score against the weak Valpariso Team.
You will NEVER see a Dayton score like that. Dayton is a class School.they don't pad numbers for any Player. also Valentino is a class player and agrees with Dayton's Philosophy.Look at his stats hes a running QB and passes when he has to.Someday when you have some time really check out ANY game this year. That kid is among the best clutch players in the FCS.Why do you think he was put on that prestigious list in the first place?? Look close, my friend, gaudy stats can be very misleading.

How in god's name has Matt Evans not made the top 20 Buchanan List? I think he's 5th in the NCAA in tackles if I heard that right somewhere ..

Misleading or not having much better numbers gets a player more awards. On your point about him being so great because he was on the preseason list. There were about 10 players on those lists in the preseason and they weren't there. I'm not taking a jab at Craig Haley because he is a good guy but he was new to the scene this year and had never seen most if not all of those players actually play. I have seen Valentino and McGregor and McGregor is the better player IMO. And unlike you I have seen every one of these guys play on tape or in person. You really need to see everyone before you call me out on this. I can understand you asking why I did not put Valentino on but insted you basically call me an idiot when you have not seen everyone play. I think anyone who shoots their mouth off about comparing players when they have not actually seen them is the one who looks like a hater, homer, and ignorant. You continue to say how great he is but what makes him better, without using stats, than McGregor, Moses, Presley, etc.?

I noticed that a long time ago, MEL KIPER er Mel Kiper wannabee. Just reads Magazines and comments on them.He needs to be ignored.
I watch tape and actually grade these guys for a living and I have been around the NFL while you sit on a message board and take cheap shots at me because you feel I am hating on Valentino. Have you ever noticed that nobody outside of PL or Dayton fans have ever stuck up for the kid? When a player is special you will hear folks from other leagues step in and validate your comments and nobody has. I'm not saying Valentino is not good but perhaps you are being a homer. You haven't asked about any other player but him and you don't even ask you just call me stupid.
I'm not trying to be mean I'm trying to get you to look around FCS and not just at your league. Folks really need to get out of their conference and see games of other players. If you think Valentino is the best QB you have seen then you need to see some of the talent in the CAA, Big Sky, SoCon, MVFC, etc.

Russell has been on it the last few weeks and the only reason I took him off was to make sure I gave players like Pough a week on the list. If Russell finishes strong I will definitely put him back on there. It is very tough to pick 20 players. I have seen every one of these guys and to be honest this year doesn't have a definite front runner but it is a deep group with 5-6 players not on the 20 that are just as deserving as half the guys on the list.

He is actually tied for third in tackles per game with 12.56. Evans is one heck of a player who just like Russell is worthy of making the list. If Moses Ellis and Ryan Lewis don't put up good numbers here in the last two weeks Russell and Evans will definitely take their place.

Honestly, I haven't had the opportunity yet to see Jones this season. I hope to get a good look at him in the playoffs though! I would not be surprised if there are some faster guys than Grimes. He doesn't strike me as having "out of this world" speed, though he is fast enough to get the job done. He broke some crucial runs against UNH last weekend when we were on our 4th QB and they knew we were running every play.
thanks for putting the OP together.

It's not speed with Grimes, it's his vision and ability to hit the hole. He is the new career leader at W&M, but I'd be surprised if he wins the Payton. However, they will be leaning on him a lot these next two weeks, and he could have some great numbers. If they make the Finals, he has a shot, IMO.

Great freaking game, We held the # 1 team in the country to 3 points in their stadium.

First of all Detroit Flyer questioned you not putting him on the list. Not me, I just called you a Mel Kiper wannabe that reads Mags. My point is to explain the diff. in the 2 players stats. I honestly don't care one way or another if you put him on your list or not. Let me ask you,What is the Payton List qualifications ?? please post. I know, I'm just wondering if you know. you do this for a living?? where can I read your writings?.
BTW I have seen Both players play, many many times, Mc Gregor is a very very good QB, my point is to try to explain the difference between the two styles of play.
I don't read the mags so that is not true. In fact I don't read much of the internet or print media to be honest.
Your point on the style of play is well taken. I understand that but I'm just telling you that the voters would vote more for McGregor than Valentino and that is why I am putting McGregor on. Now, if McGregor is not put on the official list he won't get more votes but if both are on the list I can guarantee you McGregor gets more votes.
As for the award. The award is given annually to the best player in FCS. What you have to read in to that is the fact that voters give more respect to pure numbers. I have been voting for the award for years and I can tell you that a player from the Pioneer League is not going to get serious votes unless they have truly gaudy numbers. Look at Josh Johnson from San Diego. He finished third and he was a highly rated NFL prospect who threw for 2,976 yards, 42 TDs, 1 INT, and rushed for 674 yards and 2 TDs. His gaudy TD-INT ratio was the big reason he got so much respect from the voters. Valentino doesn't even have half the touchdowns that Johnson had and he is not considered a highly rated NFL prospect either. The bottom line is that he is a very good college player with decent numbers but the last Pioneer League player to get serious consideration for the Payton was Johnson who had more than twice the touchdowns and was considered a highly rated NFL prospect.

You are welcome! I like to have good discussion but this hating because I'm not in love with Valentino from those others is just getting tiresome.
I urge you to look at Jones. He is a special player. Grimes is good, too. I think my favorite trait of Grimes is the fact he can do it all while my favorite thing about Jones is how quickly he can hit full speed and explode through the second and third level of the defense. Both are special players, not doubt. :)

The Payton and Buchanan voting takes place before the playoffs. None of the playoff games will have any effect on the outcome, despite the fact the winners won't be announced until January.

Still trying to figure out exactly who the 20 will be. Is Moses Ellis doesn't do anything this week Russell is going back on. He certainly has been playing well. Just trying to get the numbers straight my man. Don't want to put too many defensive tackles on but don't worry he will find his way on the top 20 if he can add to the sacks.

I think Erby is pretty good but to be honest when I ask around SC State the people around the team tell me their best defensive player is Donovan Richard but looking at the numbers it seems Erby should have the slight edge. Both are equally active in the backfield but Erby does seem to make more plays in the passing game. I'm going to add more guys in my final outlook at both awards and was going to wait and see if one of them seemed to have a definitive edge and then choose. From what I have seen I think both of them and Wilkerson are very good players. If your offense was as good as your defense you would have beaten Bethune-Cookman for sure. The defense has been stout all season long.

When others see Tiawan in the playoffs they will become believers. I haven't seen the others but have seen many outstanding backs in FCS over the years and Jones is VERY special. Check out these clips. He has ripped off better runs this year that are not included. His speed, moves, and quickness are amazing.

I tell you when I became a believer. I saw him play Cal last year and while I know his numbers were not gaudy it is not all about numbers. You could see the talent. Needless to say he put up great numbers to match his talent. He is just following that up with a big junior year that will have him on the NFL radar. Jones is currently rated as a 4th round projection on my board and would be higher if I could get a verified weight on him. School says he is 200 but I was told he is closer to 180-185. If he is 200 plus he would be a 3rd round projection.

Of the 8 games Tiawan played in this year 3 were only the first 1/2 or less. ex. In the Portland state game he had 196 yds and several TD's at half and only played 1 play in the 2nd half. After this bye week I expect him to really light 'em up the next couple of games and really shine in the playoffs.

I'm sure everyone but other Big Sky fans enjoy that highlight! He is truly amazing. He has a gear that most don't have. The only other player with that second gear Jones brings is Deji Karim and he is playing in the NFL right now. :)
