I'm listening to the UNI feed right now against Missouri State. (I say this with great sincerity) I LOVE these guys. Its nice to hear the excitement come through the "radio" like this...

I could barely hear the end of the Bucknell game today - the feed isn't as good - but I think their guys are in the same category. The final play call was "Bucknell Wins!!! Bucknell Wins!!!" - you would think they had clinched a spot in the dance with their excitement...

If you've ever listened to the end of the "Miracle on the Mountain" game, it's pretty clear. You can hear Steve Brown go from color commentary to whooping, hollerin' mountain man in about 3 seconds. It's pretty funny.

David Jackson is a recent graduate of ASU. Steve Brown is a great guy and one of more beloved "back-in-the-day" QB's. So both are very closely tied to the school.

Gary Ayers has been "the voice of the Catamounts" for nearly 20 years, but still stays pretty subdued even when we win, although he's clearly excited when the Catamounts win. Steve White, our color guy, on the other hand is quite a character. Ole Whitey was WCU's SID from 1970-1998 and upon retirement was officially dubbed "The historian of Western Carolina University", so you can pretty much determine how he's gonna call the game. I'll never forget the last football game we ever played at ETSU back in 2003. WCU was attempting a fg right before halftime and the fg was blocked. Now, I don't know if our players heard a whistle blow or what, but they just stood and looked at each other while this kid from ETSU returned the fg for a touchdown. Here's a summation of that particular play from CSN.

GA:"ETSU is returning this blocked field goal for a score and apparently no whistle was blown and I-"(steve white interrupts)
SW:"WHAT ARE THEY DOING STANDING AROUND AND NOT GOING DOWNFIELD?!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS! SOMEBODY'S GOTTA TELL THESE KIDS TO GET THEIR HEADS INTO THE GAME AND QUICK! NOW, ETSU IS BACK IN THE BALLGAME! NO EXCUSES!"
GA:silence...silence...silence...
SW:"IN ALL MY YEARS OF CALLING CATAMOUNT FOOTBALL, I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS!"
GA:silence...And so fans, at halftime, your Catamounts and the Bucs of ETSU are tied, 14-14."
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I've reminded ole whitey of that story several times and he just laughs and shakes his head, so yeah, I'd have to say our guys are homers. As for that ETSU game, we won 28-21. GO CATAMOUNTS!!!

Calling them anything, but "homers" would be the biggest lie ever!

Kooter, our play by play guy has been the 'Voice of the Bearkats' on the radio or as a PA announcer for ages. He went to Sam and I believe his children went to Sam. He's the biggest radio personality in town...

Leroy, our color guy is best friends with the play by play voice. He played on the NAIA World Series champions back in the 60s when Sam was a powerhouse. One of the nicest guys you'll meet. Has done commentary for ages for Bearkat and local sports. Can go off on random rants/tangents, but he's very popular.

Interestingly enough, Leroy submitted Kooter's name in a 'Name the Goat' contest for the Ag Dept's goat that they bring to football games. The Ag Dept is very active and is given 'Couch Potato' tickets per an agreement with the athletic department. Anyhow, students voted and Kooter won! So, our unofficial mascot, the goat is named after our play by play announcer. So, Kooter calls the TDs from the booth and Kooter runs the field after every score...

I really enjoy listening to them call the games when I am not able to make them. They are definetly "homers", just listen to the cannon complaints from the 2004 playoff run, especially the one in Montana. :)

Well, even our AD said we learned what a "playoff neutral" site was like... :)

Ours have yet to learn the rules of football and they have been doing the games since 1998. I hav eno problem with homerism but at least know what happens when illegal procedure is called. All that being said we had a great announcer years ago in a guy named Bob Kelley. He knew the game could follow the action and did his best to be objective. Those days are long gone. But what do you expect our play by play guy is a UMass grad.

ESPN radio has the daily, "homer call of the day" during the Dan Patrick show. Some are really out there.

In Pantherland, we all love Rima and Boyle for basketball and Rima and Peterson for football. I like the way they get excited about the games and no matter what the score is, you always feel like UNI has a chance. They are also very fair and always say positive things about the other teams and don't complain about officiating.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I think Lehigh's football announcers are fairly objective. They have frequently questioned certain play calling by the coaches and point out mistakes. Not to say they don't pump it up for the Mountain Hawks when the occasion calls for it, but I think they are fairly knowledgeable. The color man is Marty Horn who was two tiime All-American HM at QB in the mid-80's, so he knows the game pretty well. The TV color man is Kim McQuilken who was First Team All-American at Lehigh in 1973, and likewise, comments with a critical eye.

It's good to hear other people appreciate Rima and Boyle. The rest of the Valley finds them annoying and constantly mocks them. But hey, all that matters is us Panther fans enjoy listening to them when we can't make the game ourself!

I really enjoyed listening to streams of UNI games with their announcing team. Rima is on the same level as JMU's Mike Shickman, who could've gone places but loved Harrisonburg too much to leave.
