View Full Version : Source: UTSA More Attractive than TXST

Now let's keep in mind this is just one source and the source talked to a SAN ANTONIO newspaper, but will give the UTSA beat writer some credit - he has done an outstanding job covering the WAC situation as it relates to both TXST and UTSA. He does not sit around and goes right to the WAC, league ADs and other people around the WAC from the media standpoint.
Not sure what to make of this, but got to feel that there is some truth in here somewhere... anyone got a clue? What's true, what's false?
D.S. did have some interesting comments about the two schools, though. Keep in mind that this is just one person. But D.S. did draw a distinction between the two schools that contrasts with what another WAC source told me last week, that there were a few, admittedly far-fetched, scenarios that could knock UTSA out of the running.
Said D.S.: "Unless something really goes awry, I can't see (UTSA) not being included in our future plans. I wouldn't rule Texas State out, but I don't feel as confident as I do with Texas-San Antonio."
When asked how Texas State might get left out, with such a glaring lack of other candidates, D.S. offered a cryptic response: "There are other things going on."
Asked if that meant the WAC was searching for more candidates, D.S. said, "I can't say any more than that."

Texas Terror,
Here you are once again fanning flames that you think UTSA is going FBS and Texas State is not. Prove it. This article has no facts to support and you know it.

Aren't WAC officials visiting Texas State today or was that last week?

Not sure what is harder to believe, that the WAC would want TXSTSM or that TXSTSM would want to go to the WAC.

Nope. That was bad information from some Bobcat fans, as the WAC denied a visitation date (http://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?75896-TXST-WAC-Visit-Scheduled-for-Oct.-23/)

I think this article is bad info...
The WAC is desperate to fill out their 'roster' in light of the changes to their league. TXST is the most willing and able school. This is TXST's only opening. I just have a hard time believing their is good info here.
To me, seems like a chance to blast TXST again by someone with UTSA ties... even one in the media.

See above... I agree that there are no facts to support it. We know the only entity more desperate than TXST to get into the WAC is the WAC itself...
Wanted to get some discussion and try to figure out where the truth falls. While also getting some opinion on the writer himself.

The San Antonio beat writer is a frequent poster on various fan boards, and may be attempting to fan the flames between the two schools.
Bottom line, the WAC cannot be choosy at this point, as few beggars are. It has to take both TX San Antonio and TX State regardless of any situation with Montana or other schools.

Always found that interesting - its as if the school has asked him to stir up some discussion and to keep UTSA in the forefront ahead of TXST. All speculation though... he does like to toot his horn to the WAC, UTSA fan bases...

Why does it have to take both? It minimizes their geopgrahic issues down the road in case La Tech is ever able to leave. It also may help with providing a travel partner for La Tech. Not sure how they proceed if UTSA, TXST and La Tech are all in there. Does La Tech pair with NMSU to keep the TX schools together? Odd!

I would love to see both texas schools go to the WAC, good chance they would both excell. Now theres more rumors of the 4 Dakota schools going to the BSC league . And the griz would stay put.Expanding into 2-6 team divisions would be sweet.Any thoughts from Texas fans?

It just makes sense that as large as those two schools are and with their proximity to each other, the WAC would want them as a pair.

Plucked this from BobcatFans (http://www.bobcatfans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=20254&start=0)... "straight from the horse's mouth"....
Straight from the horse's mouth today in his weekly press conference. Was asked a question about expansion. Said progress was moving and that all schools had been in contact. Made a point that campus visits not necessary. When asked by a reporter if Benson was still talking to same 3 football school candidates, he said yes and said Texas State, Montana, UT-San Antonio in that order. When asked about the budgets for the 2 Texas schools, said they were on target with the WAC 6.
This is no speculation, here is the audio, from Karl Benson's WAC conference. You will need to click on Karl Benson Oct 25th. Start at 8:55 mark and stop at 10:50. He says Texas State at 10:10 mark.

Seems that Texas State is at a disadvantage in the process, since they have a track record on the field over the years. UTSA is undefeated at this point. I think projecting what UTSA might do is more helpful to them than Texas State's actual results are for them. A bit unfair, but c'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

I used to live in San Antonio, have visited both campuses, and I would much rather have TX State which has a better name, better following, and is right inbetween San Antonio and Austin.
imo Tx State is ready and UTSA is not.

If you're the WAC you want and need them both. Far more attractive to have a travel partner than go in alone. Its several eliminated plane trips per year just for those two schools. Plus the way UTSA is moving, you dont want to be the non AQ conference who DIDN'T take UTSA. Doh!
