"South Alabama has arrived at the part of its schedule designated by a big, red circle. It's time, USA coach Joey Jones said, to step things up.
"We see it as a big challenge for our football program," Jones said of road games at Lamar and UC Davis and at home against Georgia State."

Did you notice Joey Jones is one of the top vote-getters for Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year for an FBS team? Not even a FBS or FCS - yet he's top four!
Lamar is over their heads in this game IMO. This will be as tough as it comes for South Alabama too, but Lamar can simply not have the miscues occur that have set them back...

Who knows how good S. Alabama is? They have spent the last year in the half playing Jr. colleges and club teams.

I do not think they've played club teams... though they do have a club team still at the school.
They have beaten some Div II, NAIA schools handily. At this point, Lamar can not say the same based on games againts Langston and Webber Intl'. USA have even beat Div I Nicholls by a comfortable margin. Lamar's lone Div I win came by a hair...
Not saying that Lamar can not compete in this game, I just continue to think people underestimate the talent level of South Alabama.

Don't forget Lamar knocked off DIV I Southeastern Louisiana - that beat the snot out of Texas State last week. Unlike Nicholls that hasn't beat their way out of a wet paper bag yet.

I said it "came by a hair", didn't I?
Southeastern Louisiana was far from 100% in their game against the Cardinals. I've seen the Lions play twice - once in person against Tulane and again against the folks from San Marcos on TV. I'm sure that was a different team in both games compared to what Lamar has seen...
If South Alabama takes Lamar to the woodshed in the same manner that SFA, SHSU did... we'll all have a much more honest opinion of the Cardinals.

And if LU wins you'll cut 'em some slack? LOL. None of this really matters for me until next year when it counts. But not disappointed at all in a 3-3 start...regardless of the 'excuses' everyone has made for the reasons LU has won.

A fair warning to Lamar fans. Make sure you don't even so much as dare to mention to South Alabama fans that your team stands a chance in this game. They are thoroughly convinced that because they will be entering the FBS juggernaut that is the Sun Belt Conference in 2013, any team in the FCS realm, especially a start-up, is is an equivalent of a tackle dummy for their team. If you don't believe me, go to their board and check out the thread in which they refer to themselves as the next Boise State. And you guys thought Georgia State fans are delusional ;)

At least the Sagarin ratings (as useless as they are) has the Southland Conference rated higher than the SunBelt.

Saw this post on the USA board...
Y'all act like this game is going to be easy as the poster above stated who have y'all played?
We hanged with FCS powerhouse mcneese in our first game (lost I think 30 to 27) a very impressive feat
Beat webber international in our first home game (not a great team)
Beat southeastern louisiana on the road 29 to 28 who just beat future WAC conference member texas state by 25 plus
Got stomped by SFA no excuses we played awful although they are an exceptional team
Got beat bad by sam houston state no excuses again
And beat langston by no means a great team but one of the best NIAI teams
And are about to hand Southern Alabama their first loss
LU 28 - USA 21
Btw stadium will be (if not already) soldout looking forward to a great game and fans making the trip enjoy it you will be razzed but not harrassed we are for the most part nice people and drive safely
FCS powerhouse McNeese? Been paying much attention this year? This is a rebuilding year for the Pokes! Let's also not forget that it was your first game and emotions were running high...
Then, you talk about beating SLU - "who just beat future WAC conference member Texas State by 25 plus". Let's call that the SLU team you were facing was not the same team personnel-wise that TXST just played. It'd be like playing a Lamar team sans Bevil.

I am going to say that we played McNeese a close game, we BEAT SLU, we BEAT WI, we BEAT Langston, and we lost to SFA and SHSU....for whatever excuses you want to make for those wins...a win is a win is a win. And like it or not, they're will be more this year...and even more next...

Well with your schedule... hope there would be a few more wins! Oklahoma Panhandle State still remains, right?
Neither the wins over sub-Div I teams were impressive. You guys either play down to the competition or do not have the team capable of competing on a week-in, week-out basis. Or perhaps awful coaching (from an Xs and Os standpoint or a motivation standpoint) - hard to say!
Each of South Alabama's wins against sub-Div I teams were impressive.

This game will determine a lot as far as the progress of both programs. Bare's mentioning though that USA is in its second season while Lamar is in its first. I can tell you that we spent the first four games just figuring out who are as a team. So by rights USA should be way ahead progression wise.

I agree. We are playing entire games (ie. Langston) just to accomplish a specific goal (ie. establishing a run game). Things that worked well in the McNeese game failed miserably in the SFA game. Our entire coaching staff is making adjustments where need be. It will be a good test, and while you always want that win, it will not be the end if we do not.

I guess young Christopher is not aware of what South Alabama is doing compared to Lamar. It is much easier to schedule when you are a counter (see Lamar) compared to not being one (see South Alabama), especially when teams need at least seven Div I wins to qualify for the playoffs...
Their clock truly begins next year - year three. See their schedule then?
I'm not saying Lamar's schedule is worse than South Alabama's, because it isn't - but that was just a bogus and ill-informed article that makes for good locker room material.

Two points:
1. As I've said before, these editorials by Dabe are irrelevant and ill-informed - and who cares, he's a nobody.
2. If Lamar had played the EXACT same schedule as South Alabama, my guess would be we'd have an undefeated Lamar team too.

South Alabama is participating in football as 'Unclassified' for it's first two years. Therefore, they are not a counter for FCS or FBS. Not sure what the logic is behind why they are unclassified. I'm sure TT will chime in as to why...without me having to research it.

So basically it seems to me that they are a non-counter by their own choice. It isn't a situation to where the NCAA is requiring them to schedule a certain way and thus be a non-counter. They could have just as easily played the same type of schedule that Lamar, ODU, and Georgia State have played. But they decided they wanted to play Pop Warner teams instead - making them a non-counter.

Joey Jones on Lamar:
"
Head coach Joey Jones
On Lamar:
“When you turn the tape on and watch Lamar, what you see is a bunch of really good athletes. They have done a good job recruiting from the junior college ranks in Texas and all over. Their staff has done a good job of pulling in some immediate talent. When you look at what they do offensively, they are a quick-strike, big-play team. They have a really good quarterback who is very accurate. He’s not the tallest quarterback, but he’s very accurate and can scramble around and make plays. They have some great receivers who are tall and can run. They [Lamar] really know what they’re doing scheme-wise, offensively. It looks like last week, they really tried to run the ball more. I think they made a decision to run the ball, and did a very good job of that. I think it’s helped their football team from a balance standpoint."

I can't speak for this year, but in 2009, the choice was to have a fall practice with no games or play an "exhibition schedule" as an unclassified team with one signing class and some transfers.
