Nice pub for Flanders, Bearkats...


Sam Houston State's Tim Flanders spent the 2009 season watching from the sidelines as a freshman running back at Kansas State.

A year later, the redshirt freshman transfer is back to doing what he does best — punishing defenses.

Flanders shook off a sluggish first half Saturday against Nicholls State, pounding his way to 105 yards and a rushing touchdown that sealed the Bearkats' 26-7 victory. It was Flanders' fourth straight 100-yard rushing performance, making him the only freshman and the third player in school history to achieve the milestone.

I do not think it will be a surprise if SLU beats SHSU.

Yes, it is a road game for the Lions - but with a healthy QB under center, the Lions are back to being the team picked 1st or 2nd by many league pundits (fans and otherwise) and while SHSU has had success, it is a young team.

I figure the key for SLU is to stop the Bearkat running game and get ahead early. SHSU's game plan is to establish the run and play mistake-free football. If SLU gets ahead and can put the skids on the run (and your stats prove you can), you'll force our young QB to throw the ball some and open the book for more mistakes.

That's the keys to the game. Book it!

1) Disturbing SHSU's plans to run the ball
2) Try to get ahead on the Bearkats early in order to force SHSU's offense into passing more and opening up for more mistakes

If the game is close late - you can add another one...

3) Prevent SHSU from making the big play on special teams.

SHSU has had one or two VERY big special team plays the last few weeks - from a return for six or punt block. This is an emphasis for head coach Willie Fritz.

While I do not think SHSU is the best team, the second best or third best in the SLC... I really hope that these results lend more credibility to our program this year and stop the negativity...

I figure there may be an upset or two as the day progresses that may help the Kats out in getting some respect. It's a new year... and it is obvious that Whitten had no clue how to run the program, hope he does not set you guys back.

HAMMOND — For the Southeastern Louisiana football team, Saturday was a day to forget. And after having a few days to mull over a 57-7 loss to Sam Houston State, Lions coach Mike Lucas still wasn’t in the mood to take a trip down memory lane.

“It was a very long day Saturday, a very frustrating day,” Lucas said Tuesday at his weekly media luncheon. “We did not play well in any three phases of the game.
