What are the pros and cons to a divisional alignment? Obviously, this is just restricted to baseball, volleyball and the two basketballs. I'm not sure we need divisional alignment as there will be no title game and such. I guess it just makes things clear as it relates to how things will be scheduled. It does not do much else.

The Southland Conference will switch to a divisional alignment in sports other than football July 1, when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Central Arkansas officially join the league and Louisiana-Monroe leaves for the Sun Belt Conference, SLC officials announced Friday.

The SLC, which currently includes 11 schools, will grow to 12 members July 1, making a two-division system feasible, officials said. The change only applies to baseball, volleyball and men's and women's basketball.

UTSA and Texas State will be in the SLC West Division, which also will include A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State. The SLC East will be comprised of Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana.

In 2008-09 and 2009-10, SFA will move to the East division, and Lamar will move to the West. Both wanted to be in the West for travel purposes, so the conference decided to have them trade places after two years.

In basketball and volleyball, teams will play divisional opponents twice and the remaining conference teams once in a 16-game conference schedule.

In baseball, teams will play three-game series against each divisional opponent and five of the six teams in the opposing division, meaning each team will play 30 conference games.
