How about that? They not only have one of the best coaches in the nation this year, they also have the top strength and conditioning coach. It's not exactly a position you have top of mind awareness on, but it definitely is a very important position...

NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. — Appalachian State University director of strength and conditioning Russell Patterson has been recognized by Samson Equipment and American Football Monthly — the No. 1 resource for football coaches — as the 2005 NCAA Division I-AA national strength and conditioning coach of the year, AFM managing editor Rex Lardner announced on Wednesday.

In his second season at Appalachian, Patterson was a key component of the Mountaineers’ run to the 2005 national championship. In addition to his efforts with the football squad, Patterson works directly with Appalachian’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams and oversees the strength and conditioning programs for all 20 of ASU’s varsity sports.

“The growth of strength and conditioning programs at all levels of college and high school has been phenomenal,” Lardner said. “Coaches, to a person, believe that in order to be successful, a sound strength and conditioning program is essential for their school.”
