Nicholls to observe moment of silence for student killed at homecoming hayride
THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University will hold a moment of silence on Saturday prior to kickoff against Sam Houston State in mourning due to the recent passing of Nicholls student Nathan Trepagnier.
Trepagnier, 19, was a sophomore history major with aspirations of attending law school. The Metairie native died Saturday after falling from a truck during a fraternity homecoming hayride and being run over.

Colonels open SLC play today against Sam Houston
THIBODAUX — When first-year Nicholls State coach Charlie Stubbs looks at Sam Houston State, he sees a football team similar to his own.
Both teams are under the leadership of new coaches, are full of youth and run similar offenses.
They both have young quarterbacks still learning new systems, and both teams have young and up-and-coming running backs who have made names for themselves early in the season.

Tough Assignment (Huntsville Item)
HUNTSVILLE — A lot of good football teams have gone down to Thibodaux, La., never to be heard from again.
OK, that may be a little drastic, but it would be hard to find a Southland Conference coach who would not agree that it is awfully hard to knock off Nicholls at Guidry Stadium. For years, the Colonels have used a tricky triple-option attack and a physical defense to break a lot of hearts

Nicholls version...
“Offensively we got dominated at the line of scrimmage and that involves not just the line, but a lot of things. If you don’t win the line of scrimmage and keep the defense honest, you don’t have much of a chance,” said head coach Charlie Stubbs.

SHSU version...
I told the guys after the game that the last two weeks were kind of easy," SHSU head coach Willie Fritz said. "We started fast and everything went our way. This game it didn't go our way and we had to fight through some adversity. I thought we did a tremendous job of fighting."

Sam Houston defense smothers Colonels in 26-7 win
THIBODAUX — Entering Saturday’s Southland Conference opener at Nicholls State, Sam Houston State was second in the conference with 12 sacks on the season.
The Bearkats doubled that total in a 26-7 victory over the Colonels at John L. Guidry Stadium.
With a 12-sack, school-record performance, the Bearkats left the Colonels and quarterback LaQuintin Caston helpless on offense as they dropped Nicholls to 1-4 and 0-1 in the SLC debut for first-year coach Charlie Stubbs, who said the entire offense was responsible for allowing the sacks.

Colonels defense plays well in losing effort
THIBODAUX — The result was a 26-7 loss, but entering the fourth quarter, Nicholls State’s defense had the Colonels in position to steal a win from Sam Houston State in both teams’ Southland Conference opener Saturday at John L. Guidry Stadium.
After three quarters of play, the Bearkats led, 13-7, with their lone touchdown coming off a second-quarter punt block. Added to that, Sam Houston’s two field goals each came off Nicholls State turnovers.
But in the fourth quarter, Sam Houston State held the ball for 10:44 and added two touchdowns to take the SLC win.

Post-game reaction from Nicholls fans on their own board... who did not comment on the game until today (and that includes the week leading up to the game and the almost 48 hours post-game)...
It seems no one wants to talk about it, but I guess I will start it off - that was really disappointing on Saturday. I admit that while I follow football, I am in no way a coach, but things did not look good from where I sat.
Hopefully someone can give more perspective, but it looked like all SHSU on D was doing was stacking the box, blitzing, leaving a safety in the middle close and playing man on the receivers and daring Nicholls to throw deep on man coverage with no safety help. SHSU did a very good job of clogging the middle to not allow for the inside and WR screens where the ball would be thrown inside the hash marks, which looked like a play Nicholls tried running 60-70% of the time.
For as bad as things looked, Nicholls was still in the game into the fourth quarter and actually were leading the stat sheet in total yards and time of possesion after 3 quarters (which gets you nothing on the score board). As a matter of fact, the usually good special teams basically gave SHSU their 10 first half points.
I do have to give credit to the D for playing great for most of the game and I really wish Hicks would have been able to hold on to the ball that got through his hands early in the 3rd quarter as that would have easily been a pick 6 and the game would have completely changed.
I hope things will get better in the next few weeks; but if teams follow the SHSU plan on defense, it could be a long 6 weeks.
i dont think you will get many comments on here this year regarding the colonels...there isnt much good to talk about at this point and pretty much everyone that coments on this board sold their souls to the devil when jay was fired and jumped on the stubbs bandwagon when he was hired...remember all the peace love and happiness talk???...so i dont really expect much criticism on here no matter how bad it gets...
we all knew it could be a long season...i was hoping that by this point in the season our pass protection would be better, but unfortunately is seems to be getting worse..and Sam Houston took advantage of that with their defensive strategy (man coverage and bring the house)...i doubt many teams we play from here on out will deviate from that game plan much until our O-line shows that it can protect...much like we talked after the game, the worst part about it is that our QB isnt getting quality game experience in the system as he is running for his life on every play and is not able to see plays develope properly...and until our pass pro/blitz pick-up improves it will be more of the same...
the good new is that it can be fixed with some solid recruits...oh, wait, scratch that, no recruiting budget...never mind
the other thing i noticed from the game...man was that the worst sam houston team we have played in years...they were not impressive to me at all...
anyway, geaux colonels!!!
