Most FBS Wins?

Hi there!

As a big UC Davis Aggie fan, I was pleased to witness the Aggies beating FBS San Jose State yesterday. The transitional Division II to Division I-AA Aggie team also beat the Division I-A Stanford Cardinal in 2005.

Are there any other FCS school that has beaten at least two FBS schools? If so, who?

UNH beat 5 FBS schools from 2004-2009 (they didn't play an FBS in 2006).

A whole bunch will chime in here, but just off the top of my head: App St, Delaware, New Hampshire, McNeese St, North Dakota St. I'm sure there are
more.

UNI has beaten Iowa State, Ball State, and a few others.

Going back to 1978 (the first year for FCS, then I-AA) Delaware has wins vs. -

Navy - '85, '86, '89, '91, '92, '03, '07

Temple - '80, '81, '84, '85 (and leads the series all time 22-14)

There are a bunch of wins against schools like WKU, Connecticut, Middle Tennessee St, Marshall, LA Tech, Nevada - Las Vegas, etc, since '78, but those were when those programs were I-AA.

There are also a ton of I-A wins previous to '78 against Rutgers, Maryland, Kent St, Buffalo, Akron, Ohio, and a smattering of other schools.

The NDSU win over Central Michigan was 44-14 on the road, fwiw.

In 1979, Delaware won the Division II National Championship.
During the regular season that year, they faced 4 Division I-A teams and 1 Division I-AA team.
They went 4-1 against those 5 schools.
That's 3 Div I-A wins in a single season!
(Note: All 3 of those schools are currently classified as I-AA, but were I-A back then, with more scholarships available)

UNI has beaten Iowa St 4 times, and Kansas St 3 times. Along with several wins against MAC teams.

UMass has technically beaten 6 different FBS teams (8 wins total), but it's about the most unimpressive and asterisk-ridden list imaginable:

Boston College in 1978 (first year of FCS's existence)
Holy Cross in '78, '80 and '81 (they were FBS until '82 or '84, I forget which)
Harvard in 1979 (FBS until '82)
Villanova in 1980 (last year in FBS)
Dartmouth in 1981 (last year in FBS)
Ball State in 1984 (had recently been allowed back into FBS)

So, yeah, not so much blowing our own horn as tooting a kazoo.

Actually some of the wins against Connecticut occurred while UConn was considered in the University Division of the NCAA (I-A) or BCS. Until 1968 the Yankee Conference teams were in the University Division. I have never been able to figure out if all of the Yankee teams chose to go into D-2 or not when the d-2 bowl games began in 1968, Umass, a Yankee team, beat UC Davis in the Boardwalk Bowl of 1972 which was a post season game designated for d-2 teams.

With the formation of the I-AA 3 leagues were supposed to move from I-a to I-aa. They were the Southern Conference, Yankee Conference, Ivy League and the MAC. The MAC protested and never moved.

That being said Delaware's wins against Southern Conference teams prior to the establishment I-AA should also be considered as the equivalent as BCS wins. Those would include wins against the Citadel and William and Mary in the 70's. Also in the 70's were games against Penn and Princeton. Delaware was technically D-2 and the Ivies were technically D-1. Delaware undressed Penn and Princeton in those years. This is the period where the Ivies decided that no one else in the country actually played football and that they would only play against the Patriot League. xlolxxnodxxlolxxnodx

From 1968 till the early 80's when Villanova dropped football, Nova was considered a Division 1-A team. They were the real deal with All Pro players such as Mike Siani and Howie Long on the Nova Rosters. UD beat these teams with these All Pros.

I have some friends who are associated with the Delaware College Division Champions of 1963. The Delaware team of that year went 8-0. The Ninth game against Bucknell was canceled due to the assasination of JFK. It was a great team that was one of the last great one platoon squads.

Those guys are very proud of the fact that of their 8 wins, one half came against teams that at the time were classified as D-I. They were, Buffalo Bulls (best of this bunch with future Jets All Pro Gerry Philbin), Ohio University Bobcats, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and UConn Huskies. Delaware also smacked down Temple that year.
