If the budget cuts are impacting the 'big boys' of the BCS, you know it is impacting the 'little guys'. Granted Cal had their fair share of sports, but they are cutting baseball - which is a big-time sport in the Pac-10...

The University of California, Berkeley, eliminated five of its intercollegiate sports programs Tuesday, two of which, baseball and men’s rugby, had become particular points of pride over the years.

The move comes at a time when athletics have faced strong criticism at Berkeley because money-losing sports have been subsidized while the academic departments have been forced to make severe cuts. The men’s and women’s gymnastics and women’s lacrosse teams will also be dropped from intercollegiate competition after this academic year.

By going to 24 programs, the university will save an estimated $4 million a year.

Cal Rugby is equal to Oklahoma Football or Kentucky Basketball. They are the dominant Rugby team in the nation....pretty crazy.

xnonono2x My God! xsmhx

Fullerton played Cal's baseball team a while back... it's sad to see a longtime quality baseball program cut by the recession. Hope Fullerton won't be next. *sigh* xprayx

By the way, the cuts are effective for 2011-2012, so this coming season will be their last. xsmhx

Yeah, wasn't Cal Rugby where that guy was from who organized the passengers on Flight 93 - I think he was the "Let's Roll" guy.

Yes, they have also apparently won 25 of the last 30 Rugby national championships. I am sure there are quite few varsity Rugby teams, but still impressive.
