View Full Version : "COMMIT DAY": List Your Commits

Lehigh Football Nation
February 1st, 2006, 09:02 AM
I'ts "commit day", so please use this thread to list who you know has committed to your I-AA school.

Any schools have official announcements, press conferences, or anything like that? Patriot League schools generally have nothing, so this day is usually one of frustration for our fans. : smh :

Unfortunately for SC State, from the lists I've seen, most of the commitments/signees today aren't close to DI eligible. Hence the reason they're not likely to see the field anytime soon. Props my friend, are no fun.

I can see they have no clue who were are down there... note the spelling..

Phillip Vincent DB 5-10 175 Riverwood LaFayette

Kenny McLeon DE 6-2 225 McEachern LaFayette

A defensive focus down there.. no Lehighs in Georgia.. and it's our first Georgia players since 2001. Hopefully this means a national recruiting base. But I think we need some Texas or California players for that label to be afixed. I think we are getting many Floridians.

That's a pretty good reason why he didn't pick GSU. No Prop 48's, thank God.

While greedily looking for ANY Lehigh commit information, I stumbled upon Villanova's incoming class...
http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/13759657.htm
Angelo Babbaro RB 5-10 190 Canfield (Ohio)

I see they stole another from our backyard. I know YSU was high on Babbaro but they did land his teammate Kyle Banna who I know Villanova was also after.

Blackfordpu, you beat me to the punch. I have mixed emotions about the class. I need to study up on them a bit. The kid from Baylor is a mountain. I read on the Baylor board that when he was recruited in 2002, he was listed as the 38th best tackle in the nation by Max Emfinger and Rivals100 had him listed as the 68th best player in the nation.

I don't know about you or the rest of the Kat faithful but I am starting to get that old feeling of distrust for Whitten and his staff. Their heads seem to still be up their asses if that is all they could sign.

Well, if you really look at it, we will lose several seniors in the secondary after the 2006 season, 5 to be exact. So we will have replaced them this year since most of the kids will redshirt anyway. Supposedly the two DB's we got from Longview High School are reportedly the real deal. I think we got speed for the secondary. We will have 20 seniors to replace next year.

For some perspective, here's a map. The black dot is Jacksonville. We stuck close to home this year, and hit metro Atlanta hard. I'd like to have seen a QB & a K on the list, but we'll see how it goes with what we've got.

Not a bad job by the Coaching staff considering there were no players invited to home games this past season due to hurricane Rita. :hurray: (of course, the real results will not be known for a couple years)

My question is how do all of these other I-AA schools have 20+ scholies to give and we only have 12?

Do the math. I-AA can have 63. That's 15.whatever per year.

You either have a lot of returnees, some transfers you're holding out for, or some late signees. It's not the end of the world!

UNH Football Signings (http://www.unhwildcats.com/football/20052006/020106.shtml)

Three from California!!

Love those California signings! Coach Mac has worked some interesting connections in the Golden State over the past few seasons - UNH recruiting has definitely gone "national"! All the more impressive, given the disadvantages we face facility-wise (a dead horse, I know).

I love the in-state signings as well. Word on campus is that this is a very, very strong class - of course, everyone is saying the same thing right now - but it seems like the coaching staff is legitimately excited about these kids.

your coach more than makes up for lack of facilities/fans........ You've got to wonder how much longer he will stay in I-AA. He is a good coach who does things the right way.

National Signing Day: Pough touts new SCSU class as best one yet

By THOMAS GRANT JR., T&D Senior Sports Writer
Thursday, February 02, 2006

“We think this is our best one yet.”

Like the acting IOC chairman has done for nearly every closing ceremony speech at the Olympics, South Carolina State head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough seemingly has heaped the same accolades upon each of his recruiting classes during his tenure. Whether it was Matthew Briggman and Coby Brandyburg in his first year or last year’s talented class which produced a starting bandit (Marshall McFadden), the team’s second-leading rusher (Jonathan Woods) and the timely arrival of a placekicker (Stephen Granthan), Pough and his coaching staff have set a high standard for themselves when it comes to annually upgrading the talent pool.

Based on their credentials, Pough had plenty of reason to feel “Peachy” on Wednesday. Of the 20 players who signed letters of intent to become Bulldogs, half played in either the Shrine Bowl Game or the SCADA and Georgia Athletics Coaches Association North/South All-Star Football Games.

“First, I’d like to congratulate the coaches on doing a really great job (in recruiting),” Pough said. “They really did a good job in getting outstanding commitments both in-state and out-of-state. This is a very talented group and may be our best signing class yet.

“Among those 10 players signing from South Carolina, nine of them played in either the Shrine Bowl or the North-South All-Star game, so we are naturally pleased. And, among our out-of-state signees, several are high quality players who were recruited by Division I schools, but chose us, so this certainly will help our efforts to continue to be successful and also reach some of those goals that have eluded us.”

The Palmetto and Peach states were highly represented in this year’s highly decorated class:

FB/DL Steve Jacobs (6-0, 240 lbs.), Shaw High School, Columbus, Ga. — Named the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer’s Defensive Player of the Year, Jacobs led the Raiders to a 12-2 record and a berth in the Georgia Class 3-A semifinals. A focal point of Shaw’s defensive line, Jacobs tallied 41 solo tackles and 22 assists, recovered three fumbles and intercepted two passes. He also recorded 4.5 sacks and scored three defensive touchdowns.

RB/CB Ricky Young (5-9, 190), Glenn Hills High School, Augusta, Ga. — Despite a limited number of games, still racked up 749 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season in being named to the Augusta Chronicle’s Georgia All-Area team.

DE Emmanuel Dudley (6-3, 245), Shaw High School, Columbus, Ga.— Named to the Georgia Sports Writers Association All-State Class 3-A team and competed in the Georgia Athletics Coaches Association North/South All-Star Football Game.

DT Samuel Chester (6-4, 275), Peach County High School, Fort Valley, Ga. — An All-State honorable mention, he contributed to a 12-3 Trojans squad that beat Dougherty in the state finals.

FS Phillip Adams (6-1, 185), Rock Hill High School — A versatile player who was named the (Rock Hill) Herald’s Class 4-A Player of the Year and a SCADA North/South All-Star. He had 73 tackles, seven interceptions and six pass break-ups on defense, rushed for 424 yards on 56 carries and five touchdowns, caught five passes for 228 yards, threw for 139 yards and two TDs and had two kickoff returns for scores.

LB David Erby (5-11, 185), Rock Hill High School — A co-defensive MVP of the SCADA North/South All-Star Game, the senior had 94 tackles, seven for losses, four pass break-ups, five quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery.

DT Otis Matt Key (6-2, 280 lbs.), Strom Thurmond High School — Considered one of the top offensive linemen in the state, this Shrine Bowler helped the Rebels win their first state title since 1968 by opening holes for All-State quarterback Coco Hillary, who amassed 37 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards of offense.

WR Chase Robinson (6-1, 190), Belton Honea Path — A member of the 2004 Class 3-A state championship team, Robinson led all rushers in the 2005 SCADA North/South All-Star Game. He completed 35-81 passes for 419 yards and two TDs, caught five passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 710 yards on 126 carries and a touchdown.

WR Tron Jackson (5-11, 180), Lamar High School — A high school teammate of current Bulldogs Marshall McFadden and Laquinn Ellerbe and three-time Class A champion in football and track and field.

OT Jake Johnson (6-6, 300), Hartsville High School — A 2005 Shrine Bowl selection, the S.C. Football Coaches Association Lower State Lineman of the Year and S.C. Associated Press and High School Sports Report statewide All-State selection.

DE Jeffrey Akers (6-4, 250), Prince Ave. Prep — A 2004 North-South All-Star game participant.

DE Sterling Blunt (6-5, 260), Hemingway — 2005 North-South All-Star Game, All-State in football and basketball.

OT Josh Harrison (6-4, 270), Lake City High School — A 2005 SCADA North-South All-Star.

n DL Robert Sanders (6-5, 220), Dougherty High School, Albany, Ga. — A first-team Georgia Sportswriters Association’s Class 3-A All-State selection and a key member of the state Class 3-A runner-up.

DE Jason Ayers (6-4, 250), Marlboro County High School — An All-State selection and 2005 Shrine Bowl participant DE Patrick Brooks (6-3, 235), E.E. Smith High School, Fayetteville, N.C.

TE Antuanne Kerr (pronounced Carr) (6-3, 230), Butler High School, Augusta, Ga.

OT Johnny Culbreth (6-4, 280), Monroe High School, Monroe, Ga.

The Bulldogs also signed All-State defensive back Jeff Brooks (5-11, 185) out of Killian High School in Miami, Fla., and a preseason junior college All-American punter Chris Dupree (6-0, 190) out of Coffeeville Community College in Kansas. Dupree’s signing especially fills a need with the graduation of four-year starter Coby Brandyburg.

Pough was especially pleased with the signing of several promising defensive linemen whom he hopes will duplicate his first recruiting class which produced future starters Briggman and Joel Dickson of Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

“The big key is we got a bunch of defensive line people who could help us,” he said. “More than anything else, we were looking for All-Star guys.”

This included going into Georgia and taking advantage of their connections to snag such talent as Dudley — who Pough called one of the top defensive linemen prospects in the state — Chester and Chambers. In addition to loading up on defensive line, the Bulldogs further deepened their roster of running backs with the signing of Jacobs, who could potentially play fullback, and Young.

While crediting the hard work of his coaching staff in working a year in advance toward targeting those players who could help the Bulldogs, Pough cited other key factors which helped with recruiting. Specifically, the Bulldogs’ four national television appearances, all ending in victories, and the ongoing construction of the new dormitories.

Despite the signing of a speedster, Tron Jackson, out of Lamar and the expected arrival of Pittsburgh transfer and former J.F. Byrnes transfer Terrell Allen, Pough said the team may still look to bring in another Division I-A transfer.

He’s also seeking the same help at defensive back, where the Bulldogs must replace seniors Kevin Corley and Wesley Middleton of Holly Hill.

Before Pough gets to coach the incoming talent, his immediate focus is on spring practice, which starts March 19 and concludes with the Spring Game on April 8. Just like last year, Pough has put his returning players on notice.

“We’ve got some guys who need to show up if they want to stay around,” he said.

Hey, Colgate13, you probably daMan for this question: This post has shown only sporadic or partial listings for Patriot League schools. In fact, I am quite used to seeing Lehigh and Lafayette recruits not published until sometime in the second half of February. Some even drift in later than that (Lafayette QB Brad Maurer comes to mind on that count). What's the reason for this? Does it have something to do with being a non-scholarship league?

Coastal Carolina will lose 35 in 2006. These are the guys from the first year we played football.

Yes, 100%. PL players don't actually sign an NLI. Sure we have them sign some sort of athletic agreement, but it's not binding. I think we wait for them to be admitted through ED before feeling OK to announce them officially. I think most ED football is wrapped up in the next few weeks. If a kid isn't signing ED, then they're getting dropped.

If we moved to football scholarships, we would have them sign NLIs and we'd announce just like everyone else. But for now, we're in the same boat as the Ivy. Notice the PFL and MAAC are similar...

I was able to track down a partial list of Lehigh "commits" through some local papers. Not a big list, but a few NJ/PA names. I'll be updating it during the day if I find any more names.

For some perspective, here's a map. The black dot is Jacksonville. We stuck close to home this year, and hit metro Atlanta hard. I'd like to have seen a QB & a K on the list, but we'll see how it goes with what we've got.

We signed a JC transfer at the P/K position who enrolled in January.

Georgetown does not participate in ED and does not offer early admission for athletes. A "likely letter" is just that--likely.

Georgetown does not participate in ED and does not offer early admission for athletes. A "likely letter" is just that--likely.

But you still have Early Action, which is very similar without the binding committment to enroll if accepted. I bet a large number if not all of your football players are encouraged to go Early Action if they want support.

The key is by going Early Action, they cannot go ED to another school, which is what that school will require to get support. For example a recruit interested in Colgate, G'Town and Lehigh can choose EA at G'Town, but then couldn't go ED at Colgate or Lehigh (which is what they would require).

Just a different way of slicing it but similar idea. LBPop - does this all sound familiar to you? Did LBKid have to go EA?

Monmouth University's committment list... most of you probably will say 'who cares' but this is quite significant because the NEC just awarded football scholarships this winter, with 30 over a four year period.

""It was one of the necesary steps that needed to be takedn of we want to be considered for the 1-AA playoffs. Now we should be able to compete with the PL and A10 for athletes xlolx . In the past we couldn't compete with them financially because they had more aid to give."

"We have verbal committmetns from a few more quality players. I think when all is said and done, this will be the most outstanding class we've ever attracted." -HC Kevin Callahan.

We still have more to give. They just can give it to players on a true scholarship basis. Here's what the $$$ looked like a few years ago:

Here are the reported football expenses for the PL in 2004-05:

Colgate $3,345,710
Fordham $3,109,603
Lafayette $2,786,710
Holy Cross $2,572,727
Lehigh $2,438,854
Bucknell $2,427,274
Georgetown $384,975

For the same period, here are a handful of NEC schools:

Monmouth $842,868
Central Connecticut $801,043
Albany $738,724

Just changing the criteria isn't enough on a team basis. On an individual basis, yes.

Grading the Rattlers

QUARTERBACKS -- A
With just one scholarship quarterback on the roster help was needed. Robert Love and Eugene Smith were rated among the best in the state, while Battle could be a diamond in the rough.

OFFENSIVE LINE -- A
FAMU looked toward the future with these five signings with is made up of offensive tackles. Leon Daniels, Robert Okeafor and Christopher Sands could be future studs.

RUNNING BACKS -- C
ADVERTISEMENT

Mykel Benson gives FAMU a real fullback for the offense, but a replacement for Rashard Pompey has been tough to find so far.

RECEIVERS -- I
FAMU already had several receivers in camp and didn't need to sign one. The Rattlers signed only one tight end.

DEFENSIVE LINE -- A
Robert Nealy, Cameron Houston and Victory Nettles could be needed right away at defensive tackle.LINEBACKERS -- BDamien Priester, Darius Nobles and Bryan Barker aren't converted defensive backs, but with so many losses in this area will they be enough to fill the holes?

DEFENSIVE BACKS -- B
Allen Bruce and Derric Tarver were very productive in high school, but Antwaun Moore's speed could make him something special.

While greedily looking for ANY Lehigh commit information, I stumbled upon Villanova's incoming class...

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/13759657.htm

Angelo Babbaro RB 5-10 190 Canfield (Ohio)

Aaron Ball RB 5-9 175 Cabrillo (Calif.)

Brian Brannigan OL 6-4 270 St. Joseph/Hammonton

Buddy Buckner DE 6-3 225 Hun School (N.J.)

Jarred Corey DB 5-10 185 Western ( Fla.)

Chris Farmer OL 6-5 270 West Catholic (Pa.)

Tim Kukucka DL 6-3 240 Wall Township (N.J.)

Travis Miller QB 6-1 205 Danville (Pa.)

Martel Moody DB 6-1 185 Jefferson (Fla.)

Gene Oakley DL 6-3 270 Old Tappan (N.J.)

Tom Teel DB 5-11 190 Dumont (N.J.)

Jacob Wade LB 6-0 215 Montgomery Blair ( Md.)

Not for nothing, but this didn't exactly set the world on fire to me! 3 RBs is interesting.

Actually only two RB's,and from what I hear the Babbaro kid is supposed to be decent. I have to agree with you however, not too many names here that I'm familiar with. I've seen OL Brian Brannigan play in HS,I think he will be fine.I've also seen Teel mentioned in some of the Jersey papers,(he may have had some IA offers),but haven't seen him play and honestly don't know much about him.

The number of recruits is important only when you have a lot of space to fill. Lafayette, if I'm correct, had close to 30 seniors, so they need to be aggressive this year in getting a lot of numbers. If there was a small senior class leaving, then it would be nuts to recruit a lot of freshman because there wouldn't be room. I note one school on the Board reported 50+ recruits. What does that mean? I interpret that as the coach seeing a huge need in replacing bodies. What is always interesting in this business is seeing how many from the freshman class make it through to the end. Obviously, Lafayette did a very good job five years ago in recruiting the, then, freshman class. Although I have no idea on the number entering as the class of '06, by graduating close to 30 seniors this year like indicates most of the incoming class that year made it all the way, and that's very good.
Lehigh only had about 20 seniors this year, which is good, since with the coaching transition, I would typically expect the recruiting to be a little light than previous; although in the PL we all know that signings will be continuing for the next few weeks. I wouldn't expect an official list for another 10 days or so.

That's a carry over from parent/kids not wanting to play for Bell the last 3 years.

This area is full of of nothing but LARGE CLASS highschool's--4a and 5a-- for a coach to recruit from. There are at least 20 schools like this in the JSU/Jackson Metro area alone.........not to mention all the JUCO's we have here..........and you can see how Comegy did it.

The day they fired BELL, kids were on the newscast saying JSU is BACK on the top of their list. We have not heard that in 3 years. :(

A quick & dirty perusal of the details at the goleopards.com website indicates that Frank did OK again. He got a kicker and 2 QB's with some credentials - both positions that will need some coverage soon.

Here's a question that I've always had: How come PL offensive linemen are gargantuan - at least on the better teams - while the defensive linemen seem to be "undersized" with 230 - 240 not being unusual? Seems as if this group fits that mold (again).

As a guy who was recruited by Tavani (before he was the HC), I can say he is very good with the parents. He imparts a feeling that he will take care of the kids but he will expect much from them. The moms and dads eat that up.

I certainly think Heff and Tavani go for the moose on the OL. They are not of the opinion that a quicker more agile O-lineman is ideal. They'd rather have the big and uglies who can open enough daylight for an agile backfiled to work thier magic. Also consider, 230-240 in high school is a pretty good foundation. Take it from a guy who entered Lafayette as a svelt 240 lb. d-tackel and left as a 285 lbs O-tackle. Those strength coaches know how to pack on the pounds...unfortunately, they don't do much for you once you graduate :(

Good DL of that size are at a premium. Geting a 270+ defensive beast who can move is a tall order for any I-AA team, much less a PL team. We have to get some projects that will take some time to mature.

(Warning: Here comes my defensive player bias) Offensive lineman don't have to be as agile, quick and athletic. They just have to either get in the way or stop someone from getting to the QB for about 3-4 seconds. There are more of them around than there are the athletic defensive lineman types. :smiley_wi

JSU vets need to perform in spring to stay on team

By Mark Alexander
[email protected]

Comegy, hired in December, signed 53 players to letters of intent on Wednesday. He added two on Thursday and expects to bring in at least 10 more players - mainly transfers from Division I-A programs - prior to the start of fall practice. That means roster spots, and more importantly scholarship money, will be at stake when the Tigers kick off spring practice Feb. 13.

JSU, which has had three consecutive losing seasons, has 50 players returning from last year's 2-9 team. Counting signees and potential transfers, the roster balloons past 100.

Under NCAA rules for Division I-AA programs, JSU can award up to 30 new scholarships per school year. However, I-AA programs are limited to a total of 63 scholarships per year, with that money divided among a maximum of 85 players.

That means there's a chance many of former coach James Bell's recruits will no longer be on the team when JSU kicks off the 2006 season at home against Paul Quinn.

Hmmm... somewhat related, but that can't be good for JSU's graduation rate. Most of those kids will probably transfer out, no?

Oh here we go...game on! I played two years on the D-Line and 2 years on the O-line at Lafayette so I am uniquley qualified to comment on this. While you are correct that d-line may have an edge on pure athleticism, the o-line is far more cerebral a position (by a long shot!). On the D-line you have a general plan, and at the snap you react to what happens and hope for the best. On the O-line you get the call in the huddle and then, in the space of thirty seconds, from the time you get from the huddle to the line you are mentally determining which of plan A, B, or C is the correct course of action. That, of course, changes when you get to the line and see how the defense is set. And, by the time the ball is snapped, all bets are off anyway. Always make for an interesting film session on Monday morning! The term dumb jock does not apply to your standard O-lineman.

I myself am having trouble figuring out just where we are, so its time to compile a list. Here goes:

Kyle Poinsett OL 6'3" 275 lbs FL
Brendan Buglione DL 6'4" 230 lbs NY
Tyler Spencer FB/DE 6'1" 210 lbs NY
Patrick Simonds WR 6'5" 200 lbs NY
Wayne Moten DB 5'9" 170 MD
David Gongora WR 6'2" 185 FL
Zach Lasavage RB PA
Will Griffin DB FL
Ryan Gross OL NJ
Adrien Schriefer DL NJ
Jake Moore DE 6-3 210 lbs GA
Michael Gandy LB 6-1 212 lbs GA
Zack Posey 6'3" 280 lbs FL
Rob Budny OL/DL 6'1" 245 lbs OH
Paul Mancuso OL/DL 6'3" NY
Ty Henry WR FL
Tony Watts RB FL
Ryan Meyers QB CA/LA (keep forgetting to add him to these lists!)

That's 17 players. We've probably got another 10 to go. 6 kids from Florida!

brief info on the handful fo Bison recruits i located. a bit more where the story was interesting and we beat out one of our PL foes:
______________________
Trigg - who has a 4.78 grade point average and is in the running for college scholarships at no less than Harvard, Brown, Colgate and Bucknell - is a pretty darned good quarterback as well. In four years at Robinson, Trigg threw a Tampa Bay area record 82 touchdowns and for more than 7,000 yards. As a senior, he led Hillsborough County with 26 touchdown passes and threw for 1,845 yards.

Robinson QB Marcello Trigg will not sign until Friday, according to Coach Mike DePue. The Guy Toph winner plans to attend Bucknell.

Tampa Tribune reporter Rozel A. Lee was fired Thursday because of her involvement in the choice of the Guy Toph Award, won by Robinson quarterback Marcello Trigg.

Lee, 51, a Tribune staff writer for 10 years, gave Trigg the top spot on her ballot and listed Hillsborough quarterback Jarred Fayson last.
Trigg finished with 135 points in the vote of 19 coaches and media members (The St. Petersburg Times does not participate in the voting.), with Fayson two points behind in second. Lee was the only voter to list Fayson, a University of Florida signee who was one of the most highly recruited players in the country, lower than fifth. A fifth-place vote or better would have given him the award. Lee said Friday that she had "absolutely no problem" with the way she voted.

Eric Baxter frustrated plenty of opponents this past football season with good throws, great runs and improvised jump-passes as the quarterback at Poughkeepsie High School. He threw for 910 yards and nine touchdowns, and also rushed for 216 yards as the Pioneers went 6-4.

Little did anyone know that what Baxter really loves is tackling people.
Baxter was among a group of local athletes who signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the first day of the signing period. Baxter will attend Bucknell of the Patriot League, a Div. I-AA school in Lewisburg, Pa.
He's been recruited to play safety.

''I love playing 'D', said Baxter, who played eight games at safety for Poughkeepsie last fall. ''I actually just love playing football - safety I really love.''

Baxter's decision came down to Bucknell or Lafayette. ''I knew it was where I wanted to go as soon as I walked on campus,'' Baxter said. ''It's just beautiful. It's an excellent mix of athletics and academics.''

State College had four who committed to I-AA schools: running back Matt Kenney and quarterback Ben Ganter to Cornell, linebacker Justin Masorti to Columbia and defensive lineman Josh Eden to Bucknell.

Point Boro center Drew Bottone, who was a first-team All-Shore selection, has committed to Bucknell, according to Panthers coach Calvin Thompson.

Two local athletes, tight end Brian Kramer of Southview and defensive end Anthony Schultz of St. John's Jesuit, are expected to sign with Division I-AA Bucknell. Bucknell does not offer athletic scholarships, but the pair instead will receive financial aid from the school.

Moon's Casey Williams (5-11, 192) committed to Bucknell. Williams played quarterback for Moon, but was recruited to play running back-receiver.

Why would Trigg want to play in Bucknell's triple option offense when he could go to Harvard or Brown or even Colgate and have the opportunity to play in a high octane offense with much passing?

At Colgate, it looks like he'd be competing against a I-A transfer and 3 sophomores for PT. Not a great propostion...

I have to agree with 13. On the surface it appears to be a playing time decision.

Academics? Let's see, Bucknell over Brown, Colgate or Harvard. C'mon.

Location? Maybe. Bucknell and Colgate are more bucolic than Harvard or Brown. And at Bucknell you get the greenery without suffering through Colgate's winter without end.

Playing time? Methinx that we've hit pay dirt here. Would he rather be at a school where last year's QB was a converted DB or someplace that has established or emerging starters?

Bucknell seems to have a large recruiting class this year. You want reasons? How bout Bucknell being a "bracket-buster"? The money from the BBall program is going to be funded to all sports, including football. I'll bet that's how that was sold to this year's recruits...

Oh yeah, and the academics :)

Ok, I'll agree it was the playing-time variable that weighted his decision. But the option offense doesn't seem to fit his numbers and caliber. Is he a prolific runner? I don't recall seeing his rushing stats.

Bucknell scares me. They are very close to breaking through each year but come up just short. And we just seem to barely beat them every year.. just like Colgate over Lafayette. Bucknell was a few points away from being PL co-champs in 2004.

Maybe the Bison are looking for more dimensions to their offense than they've had the past few years? They really got burnt this year by that offense...

I'm more confused over Bucknell than concerned at this point. I think there is more work there that needs to be done than we thought. They graduate a lot on defense if I am not mistaken and had some real struggles on O. I hope they turn it around, but I am wary.

I was not impressed with their recruiting class last year. I saw a lot of names this year, but until they announce and I see the heights/weights, I'll be skeptical. Coach Landis has a tendency to go after smallish OL and DL that would frustrate me to no end if I were a Bucknell fan. Having said that, Landis' recruiting team has gotten some great skill position players. It's too bad Dante Ross had to be pressed into QB duty, since he was a great cover corner. That he could be a credible QB is a testament to Landis' ability to get position players.

????

If I remember that post correctly, I was trying to say that it is no surprise that the Hoyas have struggled given the inequity in funding. If anything, I was implying that you can't really blame the team for the results if the university isn't behind them in terms of dollars.

I guess it was those emoticons that caught my attention.

Overall, I think the PL fan base does not understand the complexity of Georgetown's funding issue. Georgetown has more sports (27) than most I-AA schools. Any growth in sport funding parallels revenue gains, chiefly from the NCAA basketball tournament. The Hoyas have appeared in only one NCAA since 1997 and without that revenue, it's hard to expect any school to add an extra $2M each year on football at the expense of 26 other teams that also need a lot of funding help. (GU offers fewer scholarships across its sports than probably any Big East school.)

A lot of PL fans would be very surprised to see Georgetown spending only a fourth what the rest of the league spends on equivalencies and still be reasonably competitive in many (though not all) league games. With any shred of an offense in 2005, the Hoyas beat Lafayette and Davidson and would have probably been a six win team.

Well I guess you can count on that NCAA tourney money this year. The Sweet 16 is entirely possible, and the Final Four with any luck.

Any contemplation on dropping any sports? 27 is definetely a lot to contend with in terms of funding.

Georgetown just added softball this year, and a wide number of participatory sports has always had strong administrative support, which is good.

I only count 23 on GUHoyas.com, same as Colgate. The main difference is you have sailing in place of Ice Hockey. Ice Hockey most likely costs more... You also have baseball for men and golf for women while Colgate has XC for both men and women. (I can see Colgate adding golf for women in the near future for Title IX issues...).

On to the point though - what is G'Town's level of funding for other big east sports besides hoops?

Golf? In Hamilton? I always figured that there are about 3 or 4 days that one can play golf up there in any given year - and none of those days occur during the school year.

Already a men's team - and we've hosted the NCAAs! Seven Oaks was designed by Robert Trent Jones and it's a VERY nice college course that because of the weather doesn't get beat up year round.

You can usually golf from late March until late October.

The 27 are:

Men's (13): Baseball, Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Sailing, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track

Women's (14): Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Golf, Lacrosse, Sailing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, Volleyball.

Basketball and track are fully funded in the Big East, but that's about it for now.

It would look like X-Country isn't counted as a sport on the website - and indoor/outdoor track are being considered the same thing. I know they are at Colgate...

Anyway, so GU is not funding anything like softball or field hockey?

LFN, do you have a list of Bucknell commitments? no official release yet, but i found one more to add to my list:

Morris Knolls All-Area football players Justin Brancaccio and Brigham Farrand, both of whom terrorized opponents from their linebacking spots last fall, will continue chasing down ballcarriers on the Division I-AA college level next fall.

Farrand, a first-team running back who also excelled at linebacker, will attend Bucknell. Farrand, who had a banged-up junior campaign after a strong start, rushed for 1,525 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also had 37 solo tackles and 29 assists. He recovered two fumbles in the 21-6 state championship victory over Montclair in Giants Stadium. Farrand was also actively recruited by Colgate and Monmouth.

"Bucknell is a very good academic and athletic school," Regan said. "They project him to play weakside linebacker and they may look at him to play running back, too. But he really covers a lot of ground on defense. He is effective running with the ball but he covers an awful lot of ground on defense. He makes a great deal of plays."

Sorry, I haven't been tracking them officially. I've just noticed in my Lehigh research that I saw a lot of Bucknell names there. I'd say they have 20+ recruits (just guessing) that I saw out and about (or, as 13 might say, "oot and aboot" ;) )

Before "grading", I always look for the official school announcements on heights/weights, etc.
