Unfortunately for SC State, from the lists I've seen, most of the commitments/signees today aren't close to DI eligible. Hence the reason they're not likely to see the field anytime soon. Props my friend, are no fun.

National Signing Day: Pough touts new SCSU class as best one yet

“We think this is our best one yet.”

Like the acting IOC chairman has done for nearly every closing ceremony speech at the Olympics, South Carolina State head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough seemingly has heaped the same accolades upon each of his recruiting classes during his tenure. Whether it was Matthew Briggman and Coby Brandyburg in his first year or last year’s talented class which produced a starting bandit (Marshall McFadden), the team’s second-leading rusher (Jonathan Woods) and the timely arrival of a placekicker (Stephen Granthan), Pough and his coaching staff have set a high standard for themselves when it comes to annually upgrading the talent pool.

Based on their credentials, Pough had plenty of reason to feel “Peachy” on Wednesday. Of the 20 players who signed letters of intent to become Bulldogs, half played in either the Shrine Bowl Game or the SCADA and Georgia Athletics Coaches Association North/South All-Star Football Games.

“First, I’d like to congratulate the coaches on doing a really great job (in recruiting),” Pough said. “They really did a good job in getting outstanding commitments both in-state and out-of-state. This is a very talented group and may be our best signing class yet.

“Among those 10 players signing from South Carolina,nine of them played in either the Shrine Bowl or the North-South All-Star game, so we are naturally pleased. And, among our out-of-state signees, several are high quality players who were recruited by Division I schools, but chose us, so this certainly will help our efforts to continue to be successful and also reach some of those goals that have eluded us.”

The Palmetto and Peach states were highly represented in this year’s highly decorated class:



FB/DL Steve Jacobs (6-0, 240 lbs.), Shaw High School, Columbus, Ga. — Named the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer’s Defensive Player of the Year, Jacobs led the Raiders to a 12-2 record and a berth in the Georgia Class 3-A semifinals. A focal point of Shaw’s defensive line, Jacobs tallied 41 solo tackles and 22 assists, recovered three fumbles and intercepted two passes. He also recorded 4.5 sacks and scored three defensive touchdowns.


RB/CB Ricky Young (5-9, 190), Glenn Hills High School, Augusta, Ga. — Despite a limited number of games, still racked up 749 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season in being named to the Augusta Chronicle’s Georgia All-Area team.


DE Emmanuel Dudley (6-3, 245), Shaw High School, Columbus, Ga.— Named to the Georgia Sports Writers Association All-State Class 3-A team and competed in the Georgia Athletics Coaches Association North/South All-Star Football Game.


DT Samuel Chester (6-4, 275), Peach County High School, Fort Valley, Ga. — An All-State honorable mention, he contributed to a 12-3 Trojans squad that beat Dougherty in the state finals.


FS Phillip Adams (6-1, 185), Rock Hill High School — A versatile player who was named the (Rock Hill) Herald’s Class 4-A Player of the Year and a SCADA North/South All-Star. He had 73 tackles, seven interceptions and six pass break-ups on defense, rushed for 424 yards on 56 carries and five touchdowns, caught five passes for 228 yards, threw for 139 yards and two TDs and had two kickoff returns for scores.


LB David Erby (5-11, 185), Rock Hill High School — A co-defensive MVP of the SCADA North/South All-Star Game, the senior had 94 tackles, seven for losses, four pass break-ups, five quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery.


DT Otis Matt Key (6-2, 280 lbs.), Strom Thurmond High School — Considered one of the top offensive linemen in the state, this Shrine Bowler helped the Rebels win their first state title since 1968 by opening holes for All-State quarterback Coco Hillary, who amassed 37 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards of offense.


WR Chase Robinson (6-1, 190), Belton Honea Path — A member of the 2004 Class 3-A state championship team, Robinson led all rushers in the 2005 SCADA North/South All-Star Game. He completed 35-81 passes for 419 yards and two TDs, caught five passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 710 yards on 126 carries and a touchdown.


WR Tron Jackson (5-11, 180), Lamar High School — A high school teammate of current Bulldogs Marshall McFadden and Laquinn Ellerbe and three-time Class A champion in football and track and field.


OT Jake Johnson (6-6, 300), Hartsville High School — A 2005 Shrine Bowl selection, the S.C. Football Coaches Association Lower State Lineman of the Year and S.C. Associated Press and High School Sports Report statewide All-State selection.


DE Jeffrey Akers (6-4, 250), Prince Ave. Prep — A 2004 North-South All-Star game participant.

The Bulldogs also signed All-State defensive back Jeff Brooks (5-11, 185) out of Killian High School in Miami, Fla., and a preseason junior college All-American punter Chris Dupree (6-0, 190) out of Coffeeville Community College in Kansas. Dupree’s signing especially fills a need with the graduation of four-year starter Coby Brandyburg.

Pough was especially pleased with the signing of several promising defensive linemen whom he hopes will duplicate his first recruiting class which produced future starters Briggman and Joel Dickson of Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

“The big key is we got a bunch of defensive line people who could help us,” he said. “More than anything else, we were looking for All-Star guys.”

This included going into Georgia and taking advantage of their connections to snag such talent as Dudley — who Pough called one of the top defensive linemen prospects in the state — Chester and Chambers. In addition to loading up on defensive line, the Bulldogs further deepened their roster of running backs with the signing of Jacobs, who could potentially play fullback, and Young.

While crediting the hard work of his coaching staff in working a year in advance toward targeting those players who could help the Bulldogs, Pough cited other key factors which helped with recruiting. Specifically, the Bulldogs’ four national television appearances, all ending in victories, and the ongoing construction of the new dormitories.

Despite the signing of a speedster, Tron Jackson, out of Lamar and the expected arrival of Pittsburgh transfer and former J.F. Byrnes transfer Terrell Allen, Pough said the team may still look to bring in another Division I-A transfer.

He’s also seeking the same help at defensive back, where the Bulldogs must replace seniors Kevin Corley and Wesley Middleton of Holly Hill.

Before Pough gets to coach the incoming talent, his immediate focus is on spring practice, which starts March 19 and concludes with the Spring Game on April 8. Just like last year, Pough has put his returning players on notice.

“We’ve got some guys who need to show up if they want to stay around,” he said.

In fact, I am quite used to seeing Lehigh and Lafayette recruits not published until sometime in the second half of February. Some even drift in later than that (Lafayette QB Brad Maurer comes to mind on that count). What's the reason for this? Does it have something to do with being a non-scholarship league?

I think we wait for them to be admitted through ED before feeling OK to announce them officially. I think most ED football is wrapped up in the next few weeks. If a kid isn't signing ED, then they're getting dropped.

If we moved to football scholarships, we would have them sign NLIs and we'd announce just like everyone else. But for now, we're in the same boat as the Ivy. Notice the PFL and MAAC are similar...

But you still have Early Action, which is very similar without the binding committment to enroll if accepted. I bet a large number if not all of your football players are encouraged to go Early Action if they want support.

The key is by going Early Action, they cannot go ED to another school, which is what that school will require to get support. For example a recruit interested in Colgate, G'Town and Lehigh can choose EA at G'Town, but then couldn't go ED at Colgate or Lehigh (which is what they would require).

Just a different way of slicing it but similar idea. LBPop - does this all sound familiar to you? Did LBKid have to go EA?

FAMU looked toward the future with these five signings with is made up of offensive tackles. Leon Daniels, Robert Okeafor and Christopher Sands could be future studs.

If there was a small senior class leaving, then it would be nuts to recruit a lot of freshman because there wouldn't be room. I note one school on the Board reported 50+ recruits. What does that mean? I interpret that as the coach seeing a huge need in replacing bodies. What is always interesting in this business is seeing how many from the freshman class make it through to the end. Obviously, Lafayette did a very good job five years ago in recruiting the, then, freshman class. Although I have no idea on the number entering as the class of '06, by graduating close to 30 seniors this year like indicates most of the incoming class that year made it all the way, and that's very good.
Lehigh only had about 20 seniors this year, which is good, since with the coaching transition, I would typically expect the recruiting to be a little light than previous; although in the PL we all know that signings will be continuing for the next few weeks. This area is full of of nothing but LARGE CLASS highschool's--4a and 5a-- for a coach to recruit from. There are at least 20 schools like this in the JSU/Jackson Metro area alone.........not to mention all the JUCO's we have here..........and you can see how Comegy did it.

The day they fired BELL, kids were on the newscast saying JSU is BACK on the top of their list. We have not heard that in 3 years. :(

I certainly think Heff and Tavani go for the moose on the OL. They are not of the opinion that a quicker more agile O-lineman is ideal. They'd rather have the big and uglies who can open enough daylight for an agile backfiled to work thier magic. Also consider, 230-240 in high school is a pretty good foundation. Take it from a guy who entered Lafayette as a svelt 240 lb. d-tackel and left as a 285 lbs O-tackle. Those strength coaches know how to pack on the pounds...unfortunately, they don't do much for you once you graduate :(

Good DL of that size are at a premium. Geting a 270+ defensive beast who can move is a tall order for any I-AA team, much less a PL team. We have to get some projects that will take some time to mature.

JSU vets need to perform in spring to stay on team

Comegy, hired in December, signed 53 players to letters of intent on Wednesday. He added two on Thursday and expects to bring in at least 10 more players - mainly transfers from Division I-A programs - prior to the start of fall practice. That means roster spots, and more importantly scholarship money, will be at stake when the Tigers kick off spring practice Feb. 13.

JSU, which has had three consecutive losing seasons, has 50 players returning from last year's 2-9 team. Counting signees and potential transfers, the roster balloons past 100.

Under NCAA rules for Division I-AA programs, JSU can award up to 30 new scholarships per school year. However, I-AA programs are limited to a total of 63 scholarships per year, with that money divided among a maximum of 85 players.

That means there's a chance many of former coach James Bell's recruits will no longer be on the team when JSU kicks off the 2006 season at home against Paul Quinn.

Good DL of that size are at a premium. Geting a 270+ defensive beast who can move is a tall order for any I-AA team, much less a PL team. We have to get some projects that will take some time to mature.

Oh here we go...game on! I played two years on the D-Line and 2 years on the O-line at Lafayette so I am uniquley qualified to comment on this. While you are correct that d-line may have an edge on pure athleticism, the o-line is far more cerebral a position (by a long shot!). On the D-line you have a general plan, and at the snap you react to what happens and hope for the best. On the O-line you get the call in the huddle and then, in the space of thirty seconds, from the time you get from the huddle to the line you are mentally determining which of plan A, B, or C is the correct course of action. That, of course, changes when you get to the line and see how the defense is set. And, by the time the ball is snapped, all bets are off anyway. Always make for an interesting film session on Monday morning! The term dumb jock does not apply to your standard O-lineman.

What was meaningful is that there are a ton of deserving young men that are now part of a ton of exceptional programs.

Lee, 51, a Tribune staff writer for 10 years, gave Trigg the top spot on her ballot and listed Hillsborough quarterback Jarred Fayson last.
Trigg finished with 135 points in the vote of 19 coaches and media members (The St. Petersburg Times does not participate in the voting.), with Fayson two points behind in second. Eric Baxter frustrated plenty of opponents this past football season with good throws, great runs and improvised jump-passes as the quarterback at Poughkeepsie High School. He threw for 910 yards and nine touchdowns, and also rushed for 216 yards as the Pioneers went 6-4.

Little did anyone know that what Baxter really loves is tackling people.
Baxter was among a group of local athletes who signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the first day of the signing period. Baxter will attend Bucknell of the Patriot League, a Div. I-AA school in Lewisburg, Pa.
He's been recruited to play safety.

''I love playing 'D', said Baxter, who played eight games at safety for Poughkeepsie last fall. ''I actually just love playing football - safety I really love.''

I have to agree with 13. On the surface it appears to be a playing time decision.

Academics? Let's see, Bucknell over Brown, Colgate or Harvard. C'mon.

Location? Maybe. Bucknell and Colgate are more bucolic than Harvard or Brown. And at Bucknell you get the greenery without suffering through Colgate's winter without end.

Playing time? Methinx that we've hit pay dirt here. Would he rather be at a school where last year's QB was a converted DB or someplace that has established or emerging starters?

I'm more confused over Bucknell than concerned at this point. I think there is more work there that needs to be done than we thought. They graduate a lot on defense if I am not mistaken and had some real struggles on O. I hope they turn it around, but I am wary.

I was not impressed with their recruiting class last year. I saw a lot of names this year, but until they announce and I see the heights/weights, I'll be skeptical. Coach Landis has a tendency to go after smallish OL and DL that would frustrate me to no end if I were a Bucknell fan. Having said that, Landis' recruiting team has gotten some great skill position players. It's too bad Dante Ross had to be pressed into QB duty, since he was a great cover corner. That he could be a credible QB is a testament to Landis' ability to get position players.

If I remember that post correctly, I was trying to say that it is no surprise that the Hoyas have struggled given the inequity in funding. If anything, I was implying that you can't really blame the team for the results if the university isn't behind them in terms of dollars.

Well I guess you can count on that NCAA tourney money this year. The Sweet 16 is entirely possible, and the Final Four with any luck.

Georgetown just added softball this year, and a wide number of participatory sports has always had strong administrative support, which is good.

Already a men's team - and we've hosted the NCAAs! Seven Oaks was designed by Robert Trent Jones and it's a VERY nice college course that because of the weather doesn't get beat up year round.

You can usually golf from late March until late October.

Farrand, a first-team running back who also excelled at linebacker, will attend Bucknell. Farrand, who had a banged-up junior campaign after a strong start, rushed for 1,525 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also had 37 solo tackles and 29 assists. He recovered two fumbles in the 21-6 state championship victory over Montclair in Giants Stadium. Farrand was also actively recruited by Colgate and Monmouth.

"Bucknell is a very good academic and athletic school," Regan said. "They project him to play weakside linebacker and they may look at him to play running back, too. But he really covers a lot of ground on defense. He is effective running with the ball but he covers an awful lot of ground on defense. He makes a great deal of plays."

Sorry, I haven't been tracking them officially. I've just noticed in my Lehigh research that I saw a lot of Bucknell names there. I'd say they have 20+ recruits (just guessing) that I saw out and about (or, as 13 might say, "oot and aboot" ;) )

Before "grading", I always look for the official school announcements on heights/weights, etc.
