This former Bearkat is their top OF, reliever and 1B...
His .270 batting average (which was really .234 if you check out the 2005 Bearkat baseball stats) and .371 OBP (really .329 if you check out the 2005 Bearkat stats) is very indictative of his inability to get a base-knock when men were on base. He had a great tendency to get a strikeout when the Kats needed more than anything for a baserunner.
Oh, he batted .172 in SLC games and has a .232 OBP in those games. Couldn't hit most of the SU faithful (or mine for that matter) weight!
Great speed, but raw talent that fell further and further down the depth chart (and when he played, batting order) as the season went on. He did fine in our blowout wins over SWAC schools, so perhaps our "trash" is the SWAC baseball power's "treasure"...
He definitely was a raw talent with his great speed and play-making ability in the outfield that could've used a bit more grooming. Exciting player to watch in the field when he was on!

Merritt shines
Cador continues to rave about junior Roy Merritt, who hit .270 (with a .371 on-base percentage) at Sam Houston State last season.
“Roy Merritt has got to play somewhere,” Cador said. “I don’t know yet, but he’ll be in the lineup. A kid like that has to play. His instincts are so good, and he can do so many things so well. We don’t have the luxury of not playing him. He’s probably our best outfielder. He’s our best first baseman. And it appears he’ll be a top reliever (behind Jeffrey McCollum). You just don’t get those kinds of kids who are so versatile.”
