At the end of Old Dominion’s first football season, coach Bobby Wilder looked at the national statistics and knew exactly where the Monarchs needed help.
“We weren’t very good at returning punts or kicks,” Wilder said.
That was an understatement. The Monarchs ranked 106th in the Football Championship Subdivision in punt returns, averaging just 4.5 yards per return. They ranked three spots lower in returning kicks, with an average of 17 yards.
This season, the Monarchs have turned those numbers around. They rank ninth in the nation in punt returns (18.8 yards per return) and 21st in kickoff returns, at 25.2 yards.
