Some changes to the defensive lineup this week. With Vinnie Nicosia's injury, Mike Barry shifts from ILB back to FS. OLB Patrick Friel moves inside, and Adam Lock takes over the empty spot
Greg Sullivan's performance last week (11-14 for 180 yds, 1 TD passing/15 carries for 74 yds, 2 TDs rushing/254 total yards, 3 TDs) earned him PL Offensive Player of the Week honors. His 5,587 total yards ranks 7th all-time in Colgate history
Nate Eachus has 1,996 career rushing yards, 15th in school history, and needs 225 to break into the top 10. His 27 TDs ranks 11th in Colgate history

It got to be kind of annoying. Lamb said the quarterback competition was so close he couldn't make a call before literally the first game of the season.

Huge swing from that one fumble. Instead of maybe a 7-3 lead, it turns into 10-0 Paladins, and here we are. The offense is getting real traction with Eachus, and some with Sullivan, though their ball security needs to be a lot better. The defense is struggling right now, but if they can stop the big plays, we might be able to make a run at this one. The optimist in me says it is far from over...

Well, that went well...
The defense got shredded again today. The Paladins had 377 rushing yards, 536 total. Yikes. Furman is, at worst, the 2nd best offense we're going to see this year, but the Paladins consistently ripped off gains of 8-9 yards or more. Furman's defense played well, limiting Sullivan and the passing game, 6-14 for 51 yds. 209 rushing yards, not bad, but way too one-dimensional. I certainly knew it was a long shot to win, but getting hammered like that is pretty sobering
Silver linings? Special teams didn't look too bad, especially some decent return yardage for Noah Jackson on kickoffs. Outside of the one bad kickoff (out of 3 total), the coverage wasn't too bad, which is better than they have been on that score
Good luck to Furman, really hope you do that to more than 1 SoCon opponent this year xnodx

Thanks. We have a lot of respect for Colgate. Hopefully we will meet up again down the road.
The real shocking thing was the defense in this game. Furman's unit gave up an average of 430 ypg last season. Atrocious. Much time was spent on making that better. It looks, at least through game one, that things are much improved.
Offense we knew would be good. 536 yards against a quality opponent is a testament to that. It didn't seem as though Colgate could stop anything Furman wanted to do. The Paladins have three good running backs (not including the QBs), and gave the Raiders a steady diet of the running game.
Colgate has a lot of talent. They did get very one dimensional through much of the game. It seemed as though Furman was content to let them keep the ball on the ground and force them to 3-4 yard their way down the field. Something you can do with a big lead.

Hats off to the Furman coaches… especially the Furman D. Nate Eachus earned every one of his 134 yards.
Lots to love for Furman fans from this game. Played a lot of young players and the Furman depth was just to much for Colgate.… a very impressive, disciplined team.
BL needs to play both quarterbacks, hell Derrick also led the Paladins for a score. Forcier was handled with kid gloves…*IMO. But he showed why he's dangerous, he smoked the entire Colgate defense on on that 80 plus yard run.
Good game Furman… now go beat those COCKS!

Just got back from the game. Good win Paladins! Good game Raiders- you guys brought a bigger crowd than I would have figured- good luck the rest of the way.
The Furman offense was pretty much in cruise control the whole way, no matter who was in at QB. It felt like an old-school Furman game with great work from the O-line and pretty much anyone that was carrying the ball for us. Defensively, FU definitely looked improved, but it's hard to saw what you can take from this game. Once we realized that Colgate wasn't going to pass the ball, we stacked the box and were able to be pretty effective. Colgate got their yards on the ground(which they'll do to a lot of teams this year), but otherwise it was a very nice performance out of the Furman defense.
Looking at the box score, outgaining a team like Colgate 536-260 is excellent. Really once the second half started you could tell Colgate was gassed, and FU just kept pounding away.

Furman's advantage in athleticism was always going to be a major hurdle for Colgate... Eachus is an excellent back but he had no help, and ball control is worthless if the other team is putting up a lot of points.
I'm not sure how much we learned about the Paladins. The QB situation apparently remains in flux. The pass defense played well against a run-oriented offense... we'll see what happens against pass-happy spreads.

I saw a lot that I liked... I think the QB situation is - Furman has two very good QB that do different things. Both need to accept that together they make Furman very hard to defend.
