They are not rankings. They are ratings. The word "rankings" imply that someone inserted their subjective opinions or thoughts into how the teams/conferences are ordered. The word "ratings" better describe what these are - objective numbers/data entered into a computer that spits out an ordered list.

You can't read anything into the first four weeks of the Sagarin rankings. There haven't been enough games - until that point - for there to have been any "interconnecdtivity" to draw any conclusions form head to head matchups. Sagarin's own disclaimer says ths...

What I find interesting is that first year startup Lamar is ranked at 131, despite not having played a game since 1989, so - clearly - there's something amiss.

Great West Teams:

132 Cal Poly
149 UC Davis
156 North Dakota
167 Southern Utah
176 South Dakota

We were picked last in the GWFC poll, but yet we are better than SUU and only 7 down from UC Davis. WOW!! FormerPokeCenter is right you can't go by these without any games played.

If I remembered correctly you argued that UND was much better than last place in the GWFC. It would seem Sarigin is supporting your position. I dont understand your criticism Darrell? One thing to be thankful for: your big game this week is against team #133. Saragin has NDSU at 134. Thats appropriate for now but I think the BISON have a huge bullet and are going to be upwardly mobile in this rating system.

I did. But this shows you that in polls I am sure there is some thought process but this you don't know where these numbers came from, and after reading FPC's post it makes sense so I don't get too excited this soon. I wish he could have put the SOS in there UND is at #133 Idaho (really low for a Bowl team a year ago) then at #97 NIU. As for NDSU 134 is good to start 27 spots higher than the lowest FBS team Eastern Mich and higher than 7 other FBS teams and just under our opponent Idaho.

Sagarins is a computer model. At this time, you're effectively looking at last year's end state, not where the teams are rated on this year's results, which there are none.

I back that Sagarins, or any computer model will take some wild swings over the first four weeks.

In respect to Massey, Sagarin, etc....any guess is better than no guess

Everybody starts with last years stats and makes judgements from there. Heck, I dont think folks have decided if the preseason poll is a prediction of the finish or a ranking for week 1.
