Willie Fritz, The Man with the Plan...a write-up from the student paper at SHSU...

The August sun beats down on the eighty plus football players in Bowers Stadium. Head Coach Willie Fritz stands in the middle of the players calmly explaining the expectations of the coming year. His raspy voice sounds like a man who has smoked three packs a day for two decades.

Fritz is small in stature, no bigger built than an accountant or banker. His hair turning more salt than pepper will surely grey this upcoming year as he takes the reigns of the Sam Houston State Bearkats football team for the first time, a team that is the youngest in the Southland Conference.

“We got a good group of young men,” said Fritz. “We had 48 men who were here in spring and 42 that are brand new, so it’s almost like starting over again. They’re still learning me, and 48 guys know about me a little bit because they were here for 15 practices this spring and 42 who are just getting to know me.”

Kats had their last scrimmage of the fall last night...two blocked field goals. Is the Block Party back??

HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats hit some big plays during the fourth and final scrimmage of preseason camp Thursday night. Finding the end zone, on the other hand, was a problem.

Sam Houston State moved the ball in big chunks, but managed only to score one touchdown during the live portion of the scrimmage at Bowers Stadium.

The workout started with senior quarterback Bryan Randolph running a two-minute drill on the offense’s 35-yard line. He hit wide receiver Melvis Pride for consecutive 15- and 23-yard gains to move deep into the defense’s territory, the latter coming on a nifty catch down the sideline.

FYI, a Baylor staff member informed us on KatFans.com, "No live video. Per Big 12 rules, any game that falls within an "exclusive window" can't be streamed live. And since Oklahoma State/Washington State kickoff at the same time and are on FSN, that kicks in the exclusive window rule."

The BCS conferences have made their revenue sports relatively inaccessible if they are not on television...

I'm guessing SEC realized this and brokered that deal with ESPN that puts so much (if not all) of their games on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 or ABC.

Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom: SHSU kicker and punter have tools to excel, but Bearkats trying to settle on deep snapper

HUNTSVILLE — With a lot of uncertainty surrounding Sam Houston State’s offense heading into preseason camp, it’s a good thing new head coach Willie Fritz is a man who puts a lot of emphasis on special teams.

It’s also a good thing the Bearkats appear to have a pair of solid players handling the kicking duties this fall. As the offense works out the kinks that come with learning a new system, place kicker Miguel Antonio and punter Matt Foster will need to do all they can to help take the pressure off both sides of the ball.

Yes and may be out for the season. This is bad news for the Kats as Randolph is an unknown talent as a QB for the Kats. Very limited time behind center. The one start he has had was a disaster against SFA.

Here is the article about Randolph and Rollison's injury.

Wonder how the 6th year medical redshirt works...???

Rollison had his redshirt and now will miss a year for a medical reason. Think he can't apply for one until his senior year, if he wants to stick around again after that...

Some history between SHSU-Baylor...

Despite the fact that the two universities are just two hours drive apart, Sam Houston and Baylor have met in football only twice before. Both times the games were at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. The two met in 1990 and 2003.

The pair open the 2010 season with a 6 p.m. game Saturday in Waco.

The 1990 game between the Bears and the Bearkats goes down in history as an outstanding defensive performance that almost resulted in Sam Houston's first victory ever over an NCAA Division I FBS opponent

This site - http://www.rajangan.net/ - lists the Bearkat-Baylor game on the slate for free watching...

I've never heard of the site and Baylor has no official webstream, so I have a hard time believing that this will be an accurate link that can be relied upon by Bearkat or Bears fans attempting to watch the game...

Most of the illegal sites pipe into a school's official webstream of the game or a televised broadcast. The Baylor-SHSU game has neither.

SHSU takes advantage of a bounce off a Baylor player on a special teams play, SHSU will have the ball at the Baylor 23 yard line as time is running low in the first quarter...

Of course, Randolph fumbles the next play and Baylor gets it right back... ugh!

It seems our guys continue to get into pushing and shoving with Baylor...

Griffin is really something special though. He's at times, single-handedly carrying the Bears...including that recent 4th and 3...

It would be nice now, wouldn't it? I just do not have much faith (if any) in Randolph as our QB. We're going to struggle to score all season with him...

Foster - the punter - is doing great though. Excited about four years with him.

Sprowls is worse than Randolph...

With Rollison's injury, it is all we have. I do not think we want Bell to play this year. Let's redshirt him.

Looks like a 34-3 loss for the Bearkats...

Missed two long FGs and I was surprised that Flanders did not come in until as late as he did. Seemed to have some success running the ball, albeit against the Baylor second string...

We got HUGE quarterback issues... could make this a VERY long season.

Is Bell really the one best-positioned to give us a chance this year? He's a true freshman and while he showed some signs, does Fritz and his staff believe that he's ingested enough of the playbook to really take the reigns of the club? We'll have to see if Sprowls can handle the heat as a backup and potentially starting...

I don't know if Bell is the answer but from what I have seen/read, Randolph definetly is not.

And that's something we've said since they day he arrived... he is the "starter by default".
