I hear the Griz will be playing Iowa in the first game post Iowa stadium renovations. Hopefully Iowa suffers the same fate the Grizz suffered when they brought a lower division team in to play post stadium renovations. ;)
Good luck to the Griz and I hope the game is as memorable as that game is to us Bison fans.

Sorry there Buffalo Boy, but UNI had that opportunity and couldn't get the job done. :)
The only thing to be done to Kinnick before next year is installation of the new press and sky boxes. The balance of the renovations were completed before this last season.
Iowa is a very tough place to play. The Hawks just don't lose there very often.(I would consider it a personal favor if no one mention last years Michigan game. Thank you very much).

with all the quality transfers that the Griz have recieved this off season i think that they will fair just fine against Iowa. Simular to the way that App. St. played against LSU. Good for the griz for challenging themselves instead of playing down a division. Good luck.

Iowa always plays well at home and they have some great players returning, so the Griz should be in for a real test. But, Iowa tends to play their worst football at the beginning of the year and gets better as the season progresses and they beat up on the weak teams of the Big 10. So, the Griz might be able to put some points on the board, but I don't know much about their team next year.
I think some of the Griz fans making the trip will really enjoy Iowa City as it is a very fun college town.

Iowa's coach is former Maine coach Kirk Ferentz.
Surprised that you even remember those 3 years he was the coach - even Kirk Ferentz couldn't win at Maine - 12-21 in 3 years before leaving. Kinda gives you more respect for Cosgrove at least on that front.

Partial quote from the Missoulian.."O'Day (AD) wouldn't divulge the Iowa guarantee, but said it was substantially more than what Oregon paid. The windfall will basically ensure that UM pays off its deficit in three years, well ahead of the 5-year plan originally announced - and reward the football program."
Oregon paid UM $450,000. That is one heck of a guarantee for a I-AA program!

Why does everyone mention how well App. State did against LSU? They didn't even score! UNI lost by about the same margin to Iowa but they at least scored!
Either way, I am hoping for a Hawkeye victory. I always like to root for the state of Iowa against another state...even if I don't like the Hawks.

[QUOTE=nmatsen]From people like you who have Drake emblems next to their name confessing un-dying devotion to the Black and Gold!
My son plays at Drake. I on the other hand went to Iowa. As this is a I-AA board there's not much sense to put an Iowa helmet on my avatar. I follow Drake, more than I do Iowa, because of my son. When my youngest goes off to school after this fall, presuming he plays, I'll follow his school more than I do the Hawks also. It could be D-III, NAIA I don't really care, where my child plays gets my support. However this doesn't mean I give up my alum status as a Hawk..
Regardless, how does my having a Drake emblem and telling you I'm a Hawk fan generate your hate? Except when UNI plays Iowa or Drake I pull for the Panthers. I'll pull for you guys against ISU next year. Watched all your playoff games on TV(if they were on) or listened on the radio. I watched ISU's Bowl game. I also follow the teams of the other schools my son looked at, because I respect their programs and coaches and wish them well. I really don't understand "team hate" beyond game day.

The only sure thing I can think of is travel costs. I'm guessing that doesn't make up the entire difference, so for that part I have no idea. Perhaps a small part is UNI being taken for granted? In other words, that UNI will gladly step up to the plate and play their in-state rivals?

Try this.
1) UNI has already comitted to Iowa State and doesn't need (or want) a second body-bag game.
2) Iowa needed someone for 1 game (no reciprocal agreements).
3) Montana represents a reasonable challenge (but not perceived as a threat)
4) Iowa had to make an offer that Montana would accept (that means something in excess of 1/2 million as that's what a home game makes).
5) Playing i-aa rather than 1-A is cheaper in terms of guarantees....more money for Iowa.
I assume that these factors played a part in the decision to book the Griz.
I suspect UNI would have been preferred but as I said, they have an engagement already.

Not to mention the fact that our fan base travels fairly well. Not saying we could out draw UNI at Iowa, but Montana will bring a decent amount of fans who will not only help the ticket total, but spend money in the town.

UNI's game last year vs Iowa was broadcast regionally on ESPN gameplan. While a lot of Iowa games are on nationally via ESPN/ESPN2/ABC, all the rest are usually broadcast statewide via the Big 10's ESPN gameplan package. The game vs Montana will be on ESPN gameplan for sure. Doubtful if it will be national.

Although it would be a bummer to miss out on national exposure. Thats OK.
Montana has been satellite broadcasting games for about 7 years. Even though I lived in Phoenix and now Seattle, I have always been able to find an alumni sponsored bar where I can watch the game on TV.

UNI fans: In 2001 when the paper first reported that you folks were not being cooperative in film trade, I just shrugged my shoulders and thought "I don't blame them". Then I hear that the pussycats gave you all of the film that they had on us and thought "that sounds like the pussycats, still doesn't matter". But come game time, your players took the field and proved that it wasn't just the cat's that were nasty, you guys were a lot worse. Mr. #52, you who have been posting, tell me what was wrong in the head with your #6 when he punched our kicker after a completed extra point. Before that, the late jumping and pushing on piles had already given your team a warning. Right before halftime someone (who might have been #6, it was below me in the endzone and I didn't get the number) de-narded one of our safeties and was kicked out of the game. That was the most disrespectabe team I have ever seen come into Missoula, including the pussycats (whose PLAYERS are not disrespectable, just the BrokeBack Mountain cowboy FANS are). With you guys, it was the players who disgraced yourselves, (I guess our streaker guy disgraced himself too). Too bad last year was a down year for the Griz, because you UNI fans really needed a good beatdown, and it took until the NC before you got it. WAY TO GO APP. ST.!!!!

Good Luck to Montana, I hope you beat Iowa. Iowa City is a fun place....but then again....I have a great time alll over Iowa. I really hope the fans can storm the town and have a great crowd at Kinnick Stadium. Kinnick is truly a GREAT college football venue. The stands are within 15 yards of the field (extremely loud stadium).

I love seeing Iowa lose, but this is a tall order. Iowa is tough to beat at home. I really hope the Griz can get the win.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if you can order game plan for the day or game or do you have to buy it for the season?
I'm not sure what the deal is with Gameplan. Sorry

Why is Iowa giving WAY more money to the Griz than they gave to UNI?
Easy answer: Montana did not need a game and the Hawks did. Montana had leverage against the Hawks and could hold out for a great deal. UNI didn't get as good a deal becasue their game with Iowa was scheduled a few years in advance.
It's like being in bed with my wife. When she grabs my yang, I'll do anything she wants (paint the ceiling, clean the garage, paint my daughter's toenails ect..you name it...)
It's all about leverage. :D

Griz fans should definately try to attend the Iowa game. Some of the best tailgating you will ever see. It could be an 11 AM kickoff, which means people with be tippin' back on grampa's cough medicine around 7:00 am in the parking lot. xpumpukex

Must be nice. Here in Missoula, they limit tailgaiting to 2 hours before kickoff, ending at the end of halftime.

Is there any where cheap to fly into Iowa? Every flight I'm looking at is $450 or more. Even a fly and drive I would be up for.

Flying into Des Moines and Cedar Rapids can be expensive at times, especially to CR on the weekend of a Iowa home game. Sometimes, there are really cheap flights into Omaha and then you could rent a car and drive 3.5 hours to Ia City. Its a really easy drive with Des Moines halfway.

Sometimes Quad Cities/Moline is cheap....about 45mins from Iowa City.
Chicago is 3hours from Iowa City.....
Cedar Rapids is 15 mins
Des Moines is approx 1.5 hours...
Minneapolis is 4.5hrs

I just looked and saw some tickets from Missoula to Cedar Rapids (with a stop in Denver) for around $370. And nice thing about that is Iowa City is practically a suburb of Cedar Rapids, it is faster getting to Iowa City from the CR airport than to get to the north side of Cedar Rapids.
