Some quick thoughts:

27. Holy Cross: Probably too high
62. Old Dominion: Much too low.
115. Georgia St.: Probably too low.
119. Howard: Ouch--even below Georgetown.

wow, that list is not nice to the SLC SE Louisiana at 58? Holy hell
SFA at 26? I have seen neither of these schools being ranked so low anywhere else.

Here's the explanation of pre season rankings from Massey's site:

"Preseason ratings are typically derived as a weighted average of previous years' final ratings. As the current season progresses, their effect gets damped out completely. The only purpose preseason ratings serve is to provide a reasonable starting point for the computer. Mathematically, they guarantee a unique solution to the equations early in the season when not enough data is available yet. "

Well, from what I'm seeing, the bottom 100 teams must be really bad.

8 CAA teams in the top 25 and 5 in the Top 10. That can't last very long.

It appears 14-17 are out of order. according to the Massey Website, http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare1aa.htm:

14. S. Carolina St.
15. Northern Iowa
16. Penn
17. Massachusetts

Everybody needs to read this one and then wait five weeks to worry about Massey or Sagarin or any of the other power ratings.

In layman's terms, "we're using the ole dart-board method until October."

8 CAA in the top 25 is not that surprising, but I think 4 in the top 6 is a bit extreme!

If this is just a weighted average of last year's results as was stated, then why aren't these the same his final 2009 rankings since there is no 2010 data to weigh? In his final 2009 rankings, the top 3 are the same, but UR and ASU were swapped and SIU was at #6...

6 of the top 12, CAA dominance! except for #65, four should remain in the top 10 all season & should get most of the at large bids come playoff time. ODU and Gardner Webb too low, with Liberty, a team to watch if they can sneak past JMU.

Pre-season rankings are pretty much useless. I don't think teams should be ranked until the third or fourth week of the season when they have had a couple of games under their belt.

Problem is you always have two or three teams in the top 25 that should have never been ranked there in the first place. Waiting a few weeks weeds them out.

Certainly hoping Massey is wrong. Based on their rankings UNH plays six top 25 teams and FBS #15 Pittsburgh. Talk about strength of schedule! For comparison, App State plays two top 25 teams and Florida (ranked anywhere from 2-4); and Montana plays three top 25 teams and a D-II team.
