The South Dakota State University football team has achieved its first-ever top-10 preseason ranking as a member of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, checking in at No. 9 in the initial 2010 Sports Network/Fathead.com poll. The Jackrabbits, who made their inaugural appearance in the FCS playoffs last season en route to an 8-4 overall record, compiled 1,863 points in the media poll. SDSU finished the 2009 campaign ranked 11th in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches' polls. Defending national champion Villanova (Pa.) received 104 of 126 first-place votes to hold down the top spot with 3,112 points. Montana was second with 2,899 points and nine first-place votes, followed by Appalachian State (N.C.) with eight first-place votes and 2,857 points. Three SDSU opponents are ranked in the top 25, including Missouri Valley Football Conference rivals Southern Illinois, fifth with 2,569 points and one first-place vote, and Northern Iowa, 14th with 1,269 points.
