Feel bad for the kid, that he is not getting a sixth year of eligibility.

All indications from posters on the interwebs was that Grambling thought he was going to get a sixth year. Seemed like someone was going around telling people he would return based on some of the things said...

Chances seemed unlikely due to Division I rules regarding five years to play four seasons barring a hard ship. Dillon had some questions regarding semesters where he was a walk-on, but guess the NCAA eligibility office figured something out...

FYI - article does state Grambling has six QBs on the roster...so they'll be fine.

Greg Dillon’s college football career is over. The Grambling quarterback’s petition for a sixth year of eligibility has been denied by the NCAA, leaving Grambling without its two-year starting quarterback for the upcoming season.

“From where I sit, it’s a big injustice,” Grambling head coach Rod Broadway said on Friday. “But we’ll have to live with it.”

Dillon began his collegiate career as a walk-on for ULM in 2005. He then transferred to Grambling, and won the starting job as a walk-on in 2008. Grambling finished the 2008 season 11-2 and captured a SWAC Championship with Dillon under center, and last season Dillon led the Tigers to a 7-4 record and a win in the Bayou Classic.

It's a horrible feeling when doing all the work leading up to the season and you find out your waiver was denied. Hopefully he goes off and becomes a successful outstanding citizen and gives back to his university.

The way the article makes it sound, there was obviously a huge misinterpretation of the NCAA rule by somebody...

"Though he has been in college for five years, he’s only seen the field for two. NCAA rules state that a player has five years to play four seasons."

Actually, the NCAA D-I rule is five consecutive years to have four seasons of playing eligibility...not five years to participate in four, and if you only participate in two, you get to make up the other two after the fifth year.

The fact that he was a walk-on is a non-issue as well. After the rumors that he would be granted the extra year, I had assumed that maybe there was a hardship of some sort or perhaps he was a part-time student his first year. Apparently that was not the case.

Update from the Monroe News-Star on what's next...

Next for Dillon: GSU quarterback Greg Dillon's petition to the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility was denied this week, and although Dillon is disappointed with the decision, he said he has accepted it, and is ready to move on to the next phase of his life.

"They always say that when one door closes, another door opens," Dillon said.

Dillon plans to finish his coursework for a degree in sports management in the next two semesters. He will continue to be a part of the football team as a student assistant.
