Later Start for College Baseball

Grabbed this from the Rice board. Not sure I'm too thrilled about this. Really messes up things considering seasons will now go after kids get out of classes for the spring, thereby hurting attendance at many schools and also now schools will have to pay $$$ to keep these kids on campus longer, etc, etc...

College baseball games in January and early February will be things of the past after this season. Monday, the NCAA passed legislation aimed at keeping cold-weather teams from being at a disadvantage. Next year, teams won't be allowed to begin practicing until Feb. 1 and the season won't begin until late February, with the College World Series still scheduled for completion before July.

They should increase the number of allowed scholarships so teams can add depth to pitching staffs. Otherwise with the extra double headers this rule will cause there could be some injuries.

It really helps out the northern schools, and with warmer weather it may help us get more asses in our beautiful stadium

College baseball blows. They can shove those aluminum bats you know where.

However, I have a better solution to the "weather" advantage. Go back to regionalizing the College World Series. Since they dumped that format, few teams from the Midwest or Northeast have made it to the Series, and that's basically what this is all about. Anybody recall Seton Hall and Maine winning CWS games some 20+ years ago?

Boone is a very tough place to practice or play baseball in January. This probably has something to do with ASU's home games at 3 minor-league stadiums this season.

They'll play at Hickory's L.P. Franz Stadium (about 40 miles SE of Boone, home of the South Atlantic League Crawdads), Kannapolis' Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium (not far from Charlotte, home of the SAL Kannapolis Intimidators), and Winston-Salem's Ernie Shore Field (home of the Carolina League W-S Warthogs).

Those venues ought to offer more favorable early Spring weather, not to mention appealing to alumni who would never drive up to Boone for a baseball game.

Up in Fargo, it's not uncommon to have snow on the ground until the middle of March or even into April. Then again, the high schools have a short football season with the N.D. championships in early November and the Minn. championships the day after Thanksgiving.

Hate it. The northern teams that invest in facilities & coached can already compete in college baseball. See Nebraska, Washington, Notre Dame.

I thought it was all about having the best teams in the country playing for a national championship. That's the way it is in every other sport. Or should we give the SEC an automatic entry to the Frozen Four?

Maine used to be a pretty regular CWS participant when there were true regionals. They won Northeast regional 4 of 5 years in the early 80's; St. John's was their only consistent competition. '86 was their last trip to Omaha, due to the "de-regionalization" of the regionals. Their program slipped soon after. Last year was only their second trip to the regionals since '93.

Yeah, let's see more crappy teams. Let's invite the Canadian and Mexican college champions, too, so we can favor the entire continent!

College baseball could be more marketable if the northern teams would bother to market it. And that mainly means spending money on coaches and stadiums. Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Washington have done that, and they've been very successful. Ohio State has done it, too, and they *HOSTED* a Super Regional a couple of years ago.

If you do it right, you'll be rewarded.
