+1. Definitely going to be interesting either way. I just can't picture what a red field is really going to look like. How many TV games does EWU get? I can't imagine a red field is going to be easy on the cameras.

Cameras are impartial and objective. They record images.
We don't usually get many or any, but this year the first game on the turf (and featuring two ranked teams) will be televised, guaranteed. Hoping one of the ESPN networks picks it up. Two top 20 teams and red turf. Gonna be great!

Regardless of any poll vote, it's going to be called the "Red Carpet" by fans, where opponents are invited to trip and fall - on camera.

definitely hurts my eyes already... the other thing is, with a dark brown football, i could see it being hard to tell where the ball is on camera. at boise, you won't lose sight of the football on TV. with red? not so sure. it probably will help recruiting though, kids love that kind of "quirky" thing.

I would think it would have a negative impact on recruiting. As an ex player, I would definetely scratch EWU off my list for installing Red turf. But what do I know, it didn't seem to hurt Boise State with their ugly a$$ blue turf.

IMO it'll be easier to see the ball on red than it is on Boise's blue. Footballs are dark brown, and Boise's field is a dark blue. I have trouble following the ball on pass plays watching their games on tv.
Also keep in mind that it's high noon right now on a very sunny day. We're not gonna be playing games at noon, so the light on the field will be much different than you see in that crappy web cam. I'm going to go up there in a bit and I'll take some pics closer to the time we'd usually be kicking off (between 2-4), and post them.

Honest question here - Are they going to resurface the track as well? Black? Red?

Well the field is definitely as bright red as it looks in the construction cam, perhaps a slight bit darker. It's effin' awesome! :D No noticeable glare, just bright *** red. It'll change shades pretty dramatically depending on the weather and shadows, so it'll be all sorts of red.
Forgive the crappy pics, I borrowed my roommate's P&S since my camera is temporarily out of commish.

WTF is up with all the "how will affect cameras" crap? They don't have opinions, they record color, shapes and sounds. Do you think the camera is just going to quit working because it has to record more red than usual? How will TV cameras be affected by the sky? It's so much blue. xrolleyesx

Its all about pigmentation. Human skin is 70% red pigmentation. Weathermen and movie producers use green screens, and blue screens specifically because they are the furthest from human skin tone. Depending what colors other teams wear, like green, or type of lighting, or camera quality, there could possibly be problems. Just wondering how much thought EW put into the decision.

Well, speaking as a red/green colorblind person, I actually think it should be easy to see the football. The issue with colorblindness is that we have better rods (which sense light & dark) than cones (which sense color tones). A medium-dark brown football against a light/bright red field should be easy to distinguish. I think it would be easier to lose the football on a traditional green field because the grass and the football are similar levels of darkness.
Does that make sense?

Im color blind also, bad enough to where it prevented be from going into the service because I was so limited in the fields I could choose. I had a red shirt once, with white pinstripes. About 2 years later when I was getting rid of it, someone brought it to my attention that it also had green stripes I had never noticed. I hate it. I have had some issues with some brown and green combinations, never watching a game though, but reds seem to hide colors from me more, and the lighter brown the football, ehh. It may be a non issue, Ive just never seen a similar situation. As for TV cameras, they may have to use a higher quality camera from my understanding.

It will be interesting to see the final product and would be great if they televised the game with The Griz. If EWU wears all red uniforms they might be completely stealth on the playing field; good for D but bad for O. Pics so far would make me think the reflection in bright sun would be difficult but in the end it might even give a homefield advantage. If the players and fans love it, why not. Certainly unique! When is JMU's purple and FLA A&M orange being installed??

BOISE, Idaho -- The blue turf at Boise State's Bronco Stadium is being replaced with different blue turf for free this summer due to a reflective glare that has irritated fans the last two seasons.
Athletic director Gene Bleymaier says light-reflecting fibers in the current artificial field cause problems for people watching the game in person or on television.
People had a point about the turf possibly affecting TV cameras and fans. I watched a couple BSU games on TV last year and had noticed myself how shiny it was. The worst was when it was raining and the turf got wet. It reflected light so bad that it was almost hard to see the lines on the field at certain angles.

Yeah, maybe if this was happening 10 years ago (when BSU's field was last replaced). This turf doesn't reflect like that. Like I said before, cameras are objective... they record what's there. People are biased and subjective.

BSU's turf was less than 2 years old. And no, cameras are not objective. They can be extremely sensative to different lighting and angles. Nothing to be defensive about. People were simply asking how well a bright red turf will show up on TV broadcasts.

Objective
-noun
3. Also called object glass, object lens, objective lens. Optics . (in a telescope, microscope, camera, or other optical system) the lens or combination of lenses that first receives the rays from the object and forms the image in the focal plane of the eyepiece, as in a microscope, or on a plate or screen, as in a camera.
-adjective
5. not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased: an objective opinion.
6. intent upon or dealing with things external to the mind rather than with thoughts or feelings, as a person or a book.
The color of the field does not influence or cause problems for cameras, as they operate based on the laws of physics. Light affects cameras, however given a competent photographer operating it, a simple adjustment to shutter speed, aperture, or ISO(ASA) can be made to properly expose the image/video. It appears you don't know much about cameras or photography.

Liberty had the same problem with its FieldTurf, and it's the normal green color. It looked horrible on TV, and you could even see the shiny glare from the press box. The replacement looks much better.

I get the "We kind of need PR cause no one likes us" thing but the red turf gimmick is lame.
To be honest EWU has few fans but its one of the only Big Sky schools other than U of M I respect for their play. Ditch the lame turf though. I really doubt it will draw "Massive" amounts of new fans to Eastern.

not sure it's to bring new fans, or casual fans, but hopefully it'll bring some of our terrible alumni back to campus, maybe when they show up for a game, they'll remember 16 miles from spokane really isn't that bad of a drive, and they'll have a good time.....then maybe we can buy some better stands for the grizzly fans to use every other year:)
