From last night's meeting...

THE WOODLANDS – In order to turn the page on their football team that went 5-6 last season, lost 42-3 to their archrival Stephen F. Austin, and didn’t make the playoffs, Sam Houston State University has gone back to an old chapter of their football program in hiring former Bearkat secondary and special teams coach Willie Fritz as its 14th head coach.

And SFA beat writer continues his write-ups of the SLC...

Sam Houston looked to the past in hopes of a brighter future for its football program.

After giving up on the Todd Whitten era after his five-year reign, the school hired Willie Fritz as head football coach.

Fritz, who was 97-47 in 13 seasons at Central Missouri, was Sam Houston’s special team’s coach in the early 1990s and earlier served as a graduate assistant for the Bearkats, when he coached alongside current Sam Houston athletic director Bobby Williams.

Team meetings today...

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston State head football coach Willie Fritz has been waiting for this moment for a long time.

After putting together a staff and getting his first taste of what the Bearkats had to offer during the spring, the new coach finally gets the chance to begin his inaugural preseason camp when the players report for team meetings today.

“We really are excited,” Fritz said Wednesday afternoon. “We have a lot of new guys who we think have the opportunity to play for us, and the kids have worked extremely hard this summer.

Camp is underway...

HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats couldn’t have asked for a better day to open preseason football camp.

On a cool, breezy Friday night under the lights at Bowers Stadium, Sam Houston State kicked off the 2010 campaign with a two and a half hour practice.

Almost everybody made it to the end on two feet, and all in all, it was a pretty good start to head coach Willie Fritz’s first season.

“I thought they did a pretty good job,” Fritz said after practice. “It was nice to have this kind of day. It was great to have this kind of focus, but the trick is to have the same focus you have on day one as you do in practice 18. As we continue to come out here, we will see who can keep their focus and who can’t.”
