HOTTEST SEATS
Falcons: Brian VanGorder. The defensive coordinator has done a nice job of working with the talent he’s had the past two seasons. The Falcons haven’t always had the talent to play the kind of defense coach Mike Smith and Van Gorder want and they’ve gotten by with patchwork. But those days are over. Last year’s top picks, defensive tackle Peria Jerry and safety William Moore, return after missing almost all their rookie seasons with injuries and the Falcons used their top two picks this year on linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and defensive tackle Corey Peters. They also spent a fortune signing cornerback Dunta Robinson. Although questions remain about the pass rush, the Falcons have the talent to play their scheme. That means the defense must take a big step forward.

Worst defensive coach in the country.

Thanks for sharing this. Though I don't take pride in wishing others ill, I'll admit that I wouldn't mind seeing him get scorched in that hot seat.

Still a pretty decent coach. You don't get SEC and NFL defensive coordinator positions if you are inept at your job. I can understand GSU fans and their ire toward him, though. However, my sympathy is limited. GSU was trying to make a splash after canning a guy who had nothing but success in Statesboro and hired a guy who had no business being a head coach.

Though I'm not saying we wouldn't have still done it, I would point out that the fans didn't have any say-so in the hiring (well, rumor has it that at least one did, but it was very limited).

I have no idea how the decision was made but it seemed like large group of fans didn't like Sewak and wanted him gone. An equally large group wasn't happy with his lack of play off success but also realized that some of his teams were top notch so they wanted him around.
But heck it was 5 years ago and Baker is still running the show (I can't find the winky emoticon):-)
I love him because you guys sucked when he was there and afterward (of course you still beat us some cuz well you know). But I disliked him because he seemed to have zero regard for any Georgia Southern tradition.

Yeah, and I'm still amazed that our people hired him because if you just spent 10 minutes around him you'd know what an arrogant SOB he is; of course, I guess that there are those that would have been fine with him if he'd produced a winner. I still think that our past president had much to do with our struggles since, but your point about Sam Baker still being around is well taken.

Right. I'm not saying that Eagles fans had a say in Sewaks firing, but it was pretty evident standing outside Eagle land that the fans were crying for his head after the meltdown at Texas State. Sometimes cooler heads need to prevail, no one is entitled to championships every year. If you went back five years and told the GSU faithful that firing Sewak would set your program back 10 years while teams like Elon and UTC zipped on by, you'd probably have gotten laughed at.
Granted they've hired a guy to put them right back where they were five years ago but now with a less talented roster. They'll get back, but needless to say the Brian Vangorder experiment was a terrible error in judgment for the program.

I will defer to the GSU fans on whether it is the past president or Baker. I have no clue. Just some of the things you hear like how Hatcher was fired seems to lead to the conclusion that Sam has a little bit of SOB in him too.

I think Baker has faults, among them being that he'll do whatever the boss tells him without even thinking about how to do it, and needs to go. In other words, in some instances I think he's been the puppet, in others he made his own mistakes, but somehow he's apparently been shrewd enough to keep the ones that really count in his corner. I just didn't want the former president to be left out of the discussion when discussing blame for the current state of our athletic program.
