Prairie View unveils plans for new football stadium

Prairie View A&M plans to unveil designs for a proposed new athletic complex that will feature a 15,000-seat football stadium, the school announced Friday.

The first phase of the project will feature a football stadium and accompanying Athletic Department Center.

"I've always said that's the last piece of the puzzle," Prairie View A&M football coach Henry Frazier III said.

The school said the projected cost of the first phase is $60 million. The Prairie View A&M Foundation will take the lead role in fundraising efforts for what the school called a "historic project."

The second phase includes the addition of football practice fields, a combined soccer and track and field stadium, construction of baseball and softball stadiums, a student recreation center and intramural fields for softball, soccer and flag football.

The final phase includes a football stadium seating capacity increase to 30,000, a 12-court tennis complex and expansion of the school's Kinesiology and Health Sciences Department.

That strikes me as... odd.

That strikes me as... odd.

30,000 is perfect for those games against SU and may move the Classics with Grambling and sTu back to PV's campus. GREAT MOVE, imho. More $$$ in PV's pockets and they wouldn't have to deal with a 3rd party. xnodx

The two HBCUs in the area not messing around. PVAMU joins TSU in moving forward with new stadiums. TSU got to invest smaller for a nice stadium thanks to the politics of the Dynamo situation. This truly does show PVAMU is committed to athletics and football moving forward.

TSU and PVAMU are in VERY good situations moving forward, especially compared to the rest of their SWAC counterparts.

What does going or not going to the playoffs make a difference? PV is commmited to building up their program and even with the state's budget cuts in Texas, will surely not have the same shortcomings that their league's counterparts in Louisiana and Mississippi are presently having.

In the next 2-3 years, TSU will have an athletic budget that is twice that of Southern and Grambling and 3-4 times that of Mississippi Valley State's. PVAMU is a bit behind TSU, but I don't expect it to be much longer...

Yes our budget continues to grow and shortly you'll see the improvement in competition all sports plus facilities. My apologies for digressing off topic; I will no longer discuss our future improvements because PV deserves everything they are getting. They have a beautiful campus.

It wasn't that long ago that Prairie View A&M debated whether to continue providing socks and jockstraps for its football players.

Now, the school has had budget discussions about championship rings and plans to build a football stadium and athletic facilities that should meet the need of its athletes for decades.

Friday, school officials shared a new athletic facilities vision with alumni at their annual convention in New Orleans. Though the highlight is a 15,000-seat (expandable to 30,000) football stadium, which would replace Blackshear Stadium, where the Panthers have played home games since 1960, that is only a small part of the three-phase plan.

I am speaking more financially...

Those schools have already got stadium situations in place, but financially moving forward - TSU and PVAMU are going to be in a MUCH better situation than their LA/MS counterparts. Jackson State is talking Div II, Valley is in very dire straits financially (their budget would place them in the middle of Div II and currently has them at the bottom of Div I football) and I heard earlier this week where Southern (amongst other Louisiana schools) were mentioned as potential downgrades.

First off, let me say if this plan were to come to fruition it would be awesome for PV and the State of Texas in general. That said, I am surprised they would begin such a grand fundraising campaign in this current economic climate. UH was forced to release their dreams to try and show BCS conferences that they mean business about stepping up. I'm not sure where PVAMU would see itself stepping up to in another league. Do they have FBS dreams?

Cool overlook of the entire plan. It appears Blackshear becomes the new soccer/track facility. I don't see any major exterior renovations for the Baby Dome so perhaps that portion of Phase One is focused on infrastructure improvements to offices & locker rooms.

The Athletic Center is very impressive and a HUGE step up from current facilities. In fact, it looks a great deal like what we have at Liberty for our Football Operations Center.

Westside Exterior with Entrance & Pressbox. It is gorgeous and dare I say a scaled down version of the Eastside of Royal-Memorial Stadium a couple hours west on 290. I love the brick facade.

Pub keeps coming for PVAMU...


Prairie View A&M University Athletic Director Fred Washington will spend the next few days discussing the proposed Prairie View A&M Sports Complex via television and radio beginning on Saturday.

Tomorrow morning, Washington will make a live television appearance on Houston’s KPRC Local 2 News at 6:20 a.m. On Monday, Washington will venture to Houston once again and make an in-studio appearance on the popular Ralph Cooper “Sports Rap” Radio Show on KCOH Radio 1430 AM at 5:15 p.m. where he’ll take questions regarding the complex.
