View Full Version : Worst and best I-AA athletic training rooms

I think this could possibly be a whole new topic on this forum that has never been discussed. What school has the best Athletic Training room for the home team, and what schools really has bad facilities for the away team. As an AT myself I just want to find out what is out there for I-AA.
I don't know if anyone cares or not but I thought I would ask.

I'm pretty sure JMU is among the top of the I-AA class at the moment with its brand new Athletic Performance Center.

APP Sate will be getting a new 4 level 100,000 sq foot field house soon. In addition the current field house will remain with modifications. An indoor practice facility will be built above the stadium. The old Varsity Gym will be also utilized in some fashion.

Lafayette's is pretty cool- especially the "deep tank" with a floor that can be raised & lowered. These folks even make custom orthotics! I've also heard of an additional facitlity to be constructed for football this summer as part of 25million stadium renovation project.

The Field house that was completed in 1999 was a nice addition to Lafayettes facillities. With an updated stadium I would think Lafayette would have one of the better venues int he patriot league.
Speaking of bad facillities, do the visitors at Dusquesne still dress in that closet by the pool? When we palyed there half of us got dressed in the pool by the bleachers since the visitors locker wasn't able to accomodate more than 25 people.

From Albany's website:
"UAlbany's strength and conditioning area is housed in a spacious 7,200 square foot varsity strength complex. The weight room is 3,600 square feet and is a fully-equipped, Olympic-style free weight room. An efficient design allows for large teams, or several teams, to workout at a single time. The skills room is another 3,600 square feet adjacent to the weight room that offers a full line of equipment to enhance agility and quickness. It is equipped with plyometric boxes, jump ropes, medicine balls, bikes, cones and various speed building devices. The strength complex is for varsity athletic team use only and is supervised by two full-time coaches and three student interns."
Definitly one of the best of the lower-level IAA programs.

I'd like to challenge the "best staff" comment... At least you guys are getting your new stadium on time, as promised. As far as facilities, the new CP stadium may help even us out, but the Pavilion and Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) keep us ahead.
If Poly can upgrade Mott again, that would help. Once Aggie Stadium is built (if ever) it will be hard to keep up. UC Davis has so much room to expand. We are the largest UC campus.

Mark EWU down as having one of the worst weight rooms around. The locker room is nice, the stadium is getting better, but the weight room equipment gets abused fairly quickly. Athletics doesn't have its own weight room, they have to split use w/ the student population.

When you combine Furman's SportsMedicine Center and the Strength and Conditioning Center. It provides some of the best facilities in IA. 7,000 square-foot strength training and conditioning center. Is lined with windows with views of Paladin Stadium and Paris Mtn. The SportsMedicine Centers two campus locations, encompassing nearly 7,000 square feet of space offers sports rehabilitation, physical therapy, and athletic training services. Furman also has an extensive aquatic therapy program.

Maybe I did make a mistake in my explanation of athletic training room. I guess I could use this to point out what athletic trainers are, because most of the general public figures it means a strength coach or personal trainer. What I meant was the person that usually just called the "trainer". Athletic trainers are the individuals who take care of the injuries of athletes. I was wondering about facilities because many places have good facilities for home teams, and away teams use a loading ramp to tape (Cal Poly :) ), and sometimes worse. SO I apologize for the confusion.

Only the best for our visitors. Things should be looking up at Cal Poly. They are putting in 21.5 million into their stadium this year. Unfortunately it is only the first of four phases. The new locker rooms and training facilities will be in a latter phase.
At least our visiting locker room is painted pink like Iowa's is.

I feel pretty confident that Coastals weight facilities would be at the bottom of any I-AA. Our weight rooms would be at the bottom of any DII, DIII, NAIA, or even most single A highschools.
Right now no more than 15 people can lift at one time. And you can't even have that many actually lift at once because you would not have room for spotters.
The entire girls Basketball team cannot lift all at the same time.
This will be changing in the next year or maybe 2. The facility that will be built in the endzone will have as one of its major components a state of the art workout facility along with training rooms and Coaches offices.

No the other end zone is not enclosed. The proposed new field will supposedly be sunk a few feet to form an enclosed bowl. The field house would go where the scoreboard presently stands. The track would be moved to our athletic campus.

Moving the track makes sense. Not so much because of the track being "in the way," but because modern NCAA tracks are 8 lanes, and Fisher Field's is only 6. Shoehorning an 8 lane track into the stadium would be difficult, if not impossible.

I don't see why that should serve as an excuse. Modern lights are pretty bright. The common way of installing light standards for football stadia involves placing one on each corner. For smaller venues, this is usually means the poles are next to the stands. The high school stadium in Bethlehem did this because of space restrictions. They couldn't place them behind the the grandstand because that would put them in the street. Previously, the poles had been between the field and stands.
EDIT: Wait a sec, I may have misunderstood your comment. Are you saying that lights will serve as an excuse to keep the visitor stands or remove them?

I am in favor of retaining the visitor's stands, and am vehemently opposed to a high school-esque configuration that has seats on one side only. My comment/question was a hope/prayer that the need for light to come from virtually 360 degrees would mean that light standards would have to installed on the visitor's side, thereby ruining the "open field" or general all purpose field concept that would result from, and be the primary purpose of, a one sided field. Therefore, using my logic, since you can't have an open field anyway with the lights in the way, why not install visiting stands?

I don't understand what 'open field' is. The lights really don't crowd a field or take away from the atmosphere.
Visitor stands are being demolished and 'rebuilt' from what I was told, with some sort of practice field going in the back area where the stands are and in the corner.. I have no idea how that will look. Field will be moved closer to stands.

SHSU's new weight facility is being built right now. Should be done before next football season I would think.
The 11,000 square foot structure will consist of coaches' offices, men's and women's dressing rooms, and a 9,000 square foot area for weights. It is being built between the new baseball complex and the football stadium overlooking the football field.

"Open field" - my term - is not too descriptive. Sorry. Anyway, one of the earlier proposals (still floating around at the beginning of the 2005 season) was based on the supposed fact that the administration wanted to make better use of the entire Fisher Field area. They wanted student access and student use. That proposal included two items for that purpose: (1) use of one of those modern athletic turfs that would not get chewed up during the football season and therefore could be used for more than just football; and (2) elimination of the visiting stands so that the entire area back to Kirby Field House would be available to the student body.
I also do not want to be sitting in the vicinity of some fair weather Chickenhawk supporter at THE Game. He'd probably have a wine cooler and quiche left over from his pre-game soiree, would complain (again) about the lack of an ankle deep mud flat for proper tailgating, and would want to discuss rasslin'. My suggestion is to put up a big screen at Goodman and let 'em watch it at their place.

Thanks for the clarification. The idea for multi-purpose all-student use goes back to the fall 2002, but from waht you say it doesn't sound alive anymore. I liked the idea, but don't eliminate the visitor stands. I doubt there are any plans to move lacrosse games or soccer games to Fisher. That's moot... considering Rappolt Field and Oaks Stadium are nice facilities. But, you would see more students.
And yes I'm not sharing our side of the field with stinkin' ChickenHawk fans and racous middle-aged Lehigh women trying to relive the rivalry's drunken mayhem years. Bad enough we only get three small measley sections at Crapman Stadium, we don't need them crowding our field. :coach:

Not sure what all the moaning is about 'sharing' your homestands with the Engineering Mountain Hawks--since we've been doing it for decades. Lehigh has been filling half the homestand for years--you should be thankful for all the money LC has pulled in with our following. If you had sufficient following then you could force us out and make our tickets a real premium. As it is, LC needs us to fill your stadium.
And as for being given 'only 3 sections' at Lehigh-I recall you had 6--counting 3 in the lower and three above in the upper level--which is almost 4,000 tickets--some of which were returned to Lehigh this year, so no one should have gone without if they ordered on time from your AD.
If LC does away with the visitor's stands--you'll have a similar setup to Fordham's. Feels strange--and actually is a detriment to the home team with all the noise, with the opposition, behind their bench. Hard to hear. However, if room is left over there, I would think good-sized temporary bleachers could be brought in every other year. Just make sure they put in some restrooms! ;)

Lehigh has been filling half the homestand for years--you should be thankful for all the money LC has pulled in with our following. If you had sufficient following then you could force us out and make our tickets a real premium. As it is, LC needs us to fill your stadium.
Lighten up. A Chickenhawk without a sense of humor is a sorry bird indeed.
And, yes, we do recognize the sizeable difference in the fan base. It is only 6 miles between the stadiums, but the the attendance difference is far, far greater. It is a concern that has been expressed elsewhere in these posts.

Just make sure they put in some restrooms! ;)
We did an extremely poor job of advertising student tickets this year. From what I hear, no emails or flyers were mailed. So that is our own fault. Plus, students have their heads in the air and don't think about tickets until the week before the game anyhow.

I think many SLC players would probably place Northwesterns visitors locker room on the bottom. Our team typically dresses at the hotel before going to the stadium.
Here's a picture of our planned Field House Facility.

McTailgator, ya'll just keep adding to "The Hole" don't you? That looks pretty nice. Tx State's end zone complex looks pretty nice as well.
NW St. Turpin Stadium needs some serious work and cleaning. If they dumped some money into that facility, that could be one of the nicer stadiums in the SLC.

Freightliners comments about McNeese having the nicest visitors dressing room made me think...
I've been in our visitors dressing room, but have not been in any others. If ours is the BEST, the entire SLC's visiting lockers must suck. :smiley_wi
I didn't think ours was worth writing home about.
