DURHAM – For the past three school years, the N.C. Central athletic program has been like a one-man band, traveling wherever it could to get a gig while just trying to make ends meet.

Today, however, the Eagles have landed.

Does this writer realize that WSSU is heading right back to Div II?

With the move to the MEAC, they join a conference with the likes of North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, Hampton and Norfolk State.

Very ambitious scholarship strategy. Not many FCS programs and I wonder how many HBCUs have been able to commit to fully funding each sport.

Behind the scenes, however, it’s been a time of unprecedented growth – the kind of growth required for Division I certification. Wicker-McCree said scholarship funding has gone from $500,000 or less as a Division II program up to $1.7 million in the 2009-10 school year, with a goal in place to reach the maximum scholarship limit in every sport in five years.

School's official release...

During a press conference on Sept. 10, 2009, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced that North Carolina Central University would join the conference as its 13th member. And while MEAC officials along with NCCU staff, coaches, student-athletes and fans celebrated the milestone, it did not become effective until Thursday (July 1).

NCCU is now back in the conference it helped establish, as one of seven founding institutions. The MEAC was confirmed in 1970, and played its first season of competition in football in 1971.

The Eagles contended in the MEAC from 1971-79, winning nine conference championships in eight seasons
