So during Roger Goodell's speech a couple of weeks back when he brought up his proposal to add two regular season games and do away with two pre-season games, he mentioned that the NFL is the only major sports league in the U.S. without a minor league and that it may be time to think about that.

Since then, I haven't seen or heard any more on this, but what are your thoughts? Could be a great way for more borderline players to catch on vs. the CFL or UFL.

GL94 - they already did...Bobby Hebert is involved as a partner, I believe. He's mentioned it on air once or twice.

Sounds like it won't get off the ground though - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_United_States_Football_League

The CFL caps the number of import players at 20 per team, so there are limited opportunities up there (20*8=160, which is about the size of 3 NFL teams). The UFL is too small and doesn't have the stability to be a true minor league.

With the college game so entrenched on Saturdays, and HS football on Friday nights, I don't know when a minor league would be able to play unless it is in a non-traditional time like the USFL was.

UFL will morph into a minor league of the NFL before too long IMO. They already figured out that you can't have teams in NFL markets. They are going into Triple A/Fringe pro cities now.
