View Full Version : NDSU gets 4 star Wisconsin Transfer

6'6 245 DE Tyler Westphal transfers to NDSU today, and becomes the first
4 star athlete to step onto campus in football for NDSU.
Kid is a BEAST, he was injured alot at Wisconsin, but managed 2 sacks in the Badger Spring game this April. So hopefully he steps right in and becomes a impact player on Def for NDSU.

Good snag for NDSU, will they redshirt him or start him right away?

So what's the other side of the story? Injury slow him down? Wasn't going to get playing time even when healthy? Really wanted to live in Fargo?
See you Sept 11th, Lakes.

NDSU beat out SIU for him. Dale Lennon didn't do something right.
Kolpack indicated that his HS and U of WI both ran the 4-3, which is the same scheme NDSU runs.
While I wouldn't say it's a mistake, Lennon has always run a 3-4 as far as I know.
I'm sure they tried to sell him on being a 3-4 DE. Big guy, he'd probably do good in that role. But the thing is, a 3-4 DE doesn't get the glitz and glamor of being an edge rusher like a 4-3 DE does.

Darrel gets away with this according to moderater 33 on this website. apparently thats what they want.
Dale will fail now with Jerry Kill's recruits leaving the program this year or next, wait for it.
TYLER will play right away, kid had 2 sacks in badgers spring game and showed great skill, injuries have hurt him
and he was stuck behind 2 kids and wanted to play right away.

He will be in Fargo soon to start working out with the team. He already used his redshirt year but they are possibly looking into petitioning the NCAA because of his injury. I think if he can prove himself there is a very good possibility that he will be starting right away.

What was his injury?
Shoulder injury that required surgery. It sounds like he tried to rehab it without surgery first and it didn't work out. He has been working his butt off to get back to 100% and he feels like he is there. He had a solid spring game with Wisconsin but is falling behind in the depth chart because he's had to start back at square one. The kid comes from a football family and just wants to play.

A 4 star player even with an injury he sounds like a hell of a player. NDSU's Defense will be a lot tougher with him on the field. Of course Bohl would rather have his offense on the field more.:D

Good luck with your Wisconsin xfer. Ours did not work out so well. He was their backup RB and was not gonna get playing time behind PJ Hill so he came to UD. All the talent in the world speed and compact little cannon ball but did not have good vision on the field or made bad decisions as far as where to run. He was not a four star. only 3, but did get full rides from both Wisconsin and West Virginia.

On top of that NDSU is seriously in the middle of no were land as far as stuff to do outside of school/football.
Guess if UND has a specific academic program he needs but eh....

He was looking for playing time right away -> we kicked a likely DE starter off the team this spring
We also have a ton of WI kids as NDSU is one of the closest FCS schools to WI. And we have reduced tuition for WI residents (unlike UNI which does not have reduced tuition for non-Iowa residents). Including his former high school teammate (no longer on the team but still in school).

I was going to say the same thing. WI is a breeding ground for NDSU and UND players. It has been at least for UND since the early 90's, and until D2 teams in Minnesota move up to D1 and or D3 Wisconsin teams move to D1 we (us Dakota teams) will continue to recruit in that state.

There's more things to do in Fargo-Moorhead than in Missoula. You don't want to go down the route of "There's nothing to do in Fargo" because you'll never win. F-M is not a little college town.

I think NDSU could compete nationally by recruiting the states of MN and WI alone! There's that many high-level FCS football players in those two states to sustain NDSU's program. The U of MN and the U of WI mostly overlook all but the very top in-state players and there are no FCS schools in those states (not even DII in WI). And since UNI has such high tuition for non-Iowa players, the ND schools have the advantage if UNI is not offering a full scholarship.
We are getting competition for WI kids from the FCS schools in SD and IL, though.
And, of course, NDSU will also recruit from other regional states like ND, SD, NE, etc.
LakesBison

NDSU's recruiting is dominant, toyko. quit giving the troller ammo, ndsu's overall program is just fine, and 30 miles away the lakes of minnesota give NDSU an edge vs any area school. 4th of july on the beaches in 90+ heat had the HOTTIES out everywhere.

I'll call BS on yours. F-M has:
1) WAY more concerts with big-time bands coming in almost every week
2) More prolific arts scene
3) Larger drinking scene (which is really what college kids want anyway)
Fargo-Moorhead urban area population: 175,000
Missoula urban area population: 67,000
Having some mountains around or not doesn't change things much.
But, going back to Westphal, his choices, between F-M and Carbondale, were between two similar academic schools, but one of them is in a city of about 7 times the size (that's not economically depressed), with way more to do in town, that plays his type of defense, playing in front of larger crowds with a more intense fanbase where he would get more local attention.
So I'm sure that's why Tyler chose the place he chose.
Just remember this: Don't start asking the question on if a BCS transfer comes to NDSU, saying, "Why would he want to come to Fargo?", as if transferring to Missoula or Cedar Falls or Brookings is any better.

And just to reiterate, I can't wait until we run the ball directly down this kid's throat (if he's even on the field, that is) on our way to FOUR STRAIGHT againt the lowly Bison... Based on his history, however, he'll probably be holding a clip board somewhere on the sideline.

I really think of Billings as being part of North Dakota cause its so out of place with western montana cities. Butte is a city with a copper mine pit that is over a mile deep and couple miles wide.... filled with acid water.... so ya its a real dump. Part of the city might fall into the pit actually... But the people in butte are its asset. Good sense of humor, they like to party and have fun. Guess they need a positive outlook to live there lol.
The REAL montana, least the one I and most others love is Western Montana. The only cities I considered to actually have any real culture, arts, sports, partys, good looking women and overall livability are Missoula, Kalispell (The whole Flathead Lake area by Glacier), Bozeman (Ugh MSU but eh..).

Ok. Everyone is obviously happy living where they are, enough to have populations living in all of the places mentioned. Not everyone goes to lakes, skis, or does whatever people do wherever they are, so in a nutshell, every city in the US (and basically the world) has its negatives and positives. No ones opinion makes it better than the other, it all depends on where YOU are happy living. Please stop trying to make everyone agree to your own personal opinions.

The only cities I considered to actually have any real culture, arts, sports, partys, good looking women and overall livability are Missoula, Kalispell (The whole Flathead Lake area by Glacier), Bozeman (Ugh MSU but eh..).
back to thread topic ... Good luck with your xfer guys. Hopefully he works out for ya. Would like to see you come to town in the playoffs, lets see if you can pull a "South Dakota State" for us. They always give us the most entertaining games. Real nail biters but sooooo satisfying in the end.
I thought Kalispell was an armpit of a town, but Whitefish was awesome, and flathead lake was really awesome. When I was vacationing at my wife's aunt's cabin, we stopped at a little grocery store near the lake, and ran into Phil Jackson buying grocerys. I would have to say that Fargo is a better place to live, and the mountains of montana are a better place to vacation.
