I know the Missouri Valley Football Conference is not hosting a media day this year--just a teleconference.

I believe the Big Sky did this last year too so I would imagine they will do it again this year.

The Great West has never had a central spot in its history so I would imagine they will not do one either.

An online Media Day could be very successful, if done right. Unfortunately, how many media are really attending the Big Sky Media Day when there's a flight involved, you know?

I've been a part of those online media days and they were not bad. I saw increased participation in one for basketball because of the videoconferencing involved...not bad!

August 3 this year sounds about right. Still have a little summer to enjoy, however. And Wimbledon is coming up....

Better question is how many are not going to try and convince their bosses that a weekend in Park City, Utah is well worth it. :)

Last years SoCon event scheduled in Greenville, SC was cancelled due to the economy. No word on an event for this year so I guess they don't want to fool with it. The SoCon leadership is really pathetic. Their website is never up to date and they still have last years schedules up instead of this years.

Also, canceling an in-person media day due to economics is commonplace, more so with the media than it is with the schools, conference.

It probably more worth the conference's money to invest an online media day. Even an FBS conference or two is doing this. The league will most likely have some form of media day, which will likely be attended by more media, giving far greater coverage to the league as a whole...

Correct. Next week is the beginning of about a two, three week period when we'll get preseason polls and all-conference teams from each league and then - it begins!

You TOTALLY miss the mark again with this opinion. Last year, the SoCon missed the opportunity to market Armanti Edwards in front of countless media outlets and instead had a rather lame teleconference (probably the worst teleconference of any FCS conference last year). By having their event in the extremely-centrally-located Greenville, S.C. or Spartanburg, S.C., the SoCon routinely drew a large crowd to media days (ranging from two-to-three day events over the years). My guess is you would have had 200 media outlets if the SoCon had done an event last year. They really blew a fantastic opportunity to market their conference. The budget stuff was just a smoke-screen for a conference that has become increasingly less media-savy over the past few years.

I would contend that for an FCS league, that's a relatively odd occurrence (AE included). Some leagues, it would work more so than other leagues, but on the whole at this level, I do not think it's a worthwhile expense (see Big Sky, Pioneer, Great West - especially with the large travel involved).

The Pioneer used to designate a "media day," on which each school would have its own separate media day. I don't think they do this anymore.

There will be an all-Florida media event. That usually serves as Jacksonville's media day.

CAA, July 28th in Baltimore.

I wonder where they will be meeting. I read an article in the Baltimore Sun saying the ESPN Zone closed on June 16th. However I also read on 7/1, albeit a blog, the event will take place on 7/28 at ESPN Zone. Weird?

At SLC Media Days as is typically the plan...July 28.

FYI - the Ivy League conducts their media day via teleconference...

The Ivy League will conduct its 2010 football media day teleconference, featuring the eight football head coaches, on Tuesday, August 10 beginning at 11 a.m. ET.

Each head coach will be available for 10 minutes to preview the 2010 season. Jim Maconaghy, the League’s coordinator of football officials, will also be available for 10 minutes to discuss the major rules changes and points of emphasis for the upcoming season.

The FCS leagues need as much exposure as they can get and the conferences that have cut media days are only hurting themselves. The teleconferences are mediocre at best and do little to gain the leagues much preseason press. There are some things that conferences just need to bite the bullet on and proceed with. You don't see the CAA killing its media day and the travel involved there is pretty large. The SoCon and the Big Sky only have damaged themselves by ending their media events, which at one time were the best in FCS.

I disagree with your assessment. There's at least one FBS league that got more national coverage because of their ability to take it to the 'interwebs'...

"We've provided something that is cost-free for members of the media and extremely efficient as well. The key to success this year will be participation from the media and open dialogue about the progress of our league."

In addition to eliminating travel costs for media members, coaches, student-athletes and administrators to gather in New Orleans, it also saves something incredibly valuable to everyone with the season rapidly approaching.

Time.

We are not talking about FBS here, but FCS. FBS has NO relevance to this discussion. And you can disagree with my assessment all you want, it doesn't mean you are right. I've been going to media days since before you were a pup. There is no way to build relationships like you do at media events when you are conducting teleconferences. In the end, it is short-sighted for conferences to trade needed exposure for a few bucks.

Never said I was right, just that I disagree...and FBS does have relevance to the conversation since at the lower-levels of FBS, they are facing the same issues we as FCS are.

The cost of doing business has increased and in leagues that are spread out, would you rather send your writer to cover media day? Or would you rather cover as many games as possible? These are business decisions that papers are having to make. Even in the SLC, which is a "bus league", I've seen less and less coverage of road baseball and basketball games. And last year, the same can be said for football. Media coverage is thinning out and the same can be accomplished via the "interwebs" for media day that can be done in person.

Time is saved for all parties. Money is saved for all parties. There's little to gain (publicity-wise than you could via the "interwebs") and much to lose (fiscally - especially for schools who are barely staying afloat at the Div I level). Maybe "bus leagues" can do it, but those that require flights - it just does not make sense.

Sometimes it is wise to spend the money for a lot of reasons, relationship-building being the foremost reason. You will NEVER be able to accomplish that with teleconferences. And using the Sun Belt as a shinning example for anyone is ridiculous. The Sun Belt is the worst league in FBS. Why would anyone view the Sun Belt as a model for anything? You are being as short-sighted as the leagues are with your arguments.

The conferences may want to spend the $$$, but the media outlets are becoming less and less likely to attend. I attended a basketball media day two years ago in which there were more head coaches than actual media!

Mr. C is right regarding the SoCon media days. Sad to see how far that event has fallen over the last ten years, to the point it is now nothing much more than a web link. Without David Jackson and the ASU media crew picking up the SoCon slack, it would be absolutely nothing.

I wonder if the SoCon ever considered actually hosting the event in the old mill/warehouse that they renovated for their offices a few years ago. It would seem likely that they might have some space there, and in doing so they could still host an event that wouldn't drain resources at the same extent as hosting at the Doubletree or Hilton. Do it online concurrently, and it affords those media outlets who can't attend the opportunity to participate .... while allowing those that can, the opportunity to meet/greet the coaches and standout players.

Without a doubt, that environment is one of the best opportunities for writers/media to converse with coaches who they may only get to see in person once or maybe twice a year. Can't do that 'online'.
