A plan that was discussed by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as recently as March to revive the Heritage Bowl under a new name doesn’t appear to have majority support from schools in the conference, including Florida A&M.

Participating in the game would require the MEAC champion to forfeit its automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs and that is the major sticking point by the schools that will likely veto the idea. It calls for the Heritage Bowl, which was last played in 1999 to be revived as the Legacy Bowl.

In this article from 1988 - FAMU wanted in the playoffs...

The struggle in the standings for the title is complicated and confusing -- and basically irrelevant. For any Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference school to have hopes of making the playoffs -- which begin today -- B-CC and FAMU are going to have to end their seasons a week earlier.

The NCAA requires that a conference have six teams to receive an automatic berth in the playoffs. Since FAMU and B-CC can't be counted because of the late date of their game, the MEAC doesn't qualify.

The simple solution is for B-CC and FAMU to move the Florida Classic to the weekend before Thanksgiving instead of the weekend after.

FAMU Athletic Director Walter Reed said it's something that has got to be discussed. B-CC Athletic Director Lloyd ''Tank'' Johnson said it's a closed subject.

Johnson said that small, private, financially strapped Bethune-Cookman depends on the profits of the big Thanksgiving weekend draw for survival.

It also states the move, would be a test run, that if attendance dropped and didn't come back (ie MONEY) they would go back to the Thanksgiving date.
