Sacramento State is no Big Sky Conference power. Terry Wanless, the school’s athletic director, is the first to admit it.

But it’s for that very reason that he believes that the idea of Sacramento State moving to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) at this juncture might help his athletic program experience a level of success it has not yet attained in the Big Sky.

Who is better positioned amongst the California schools from a financial and facility standpoint to get a WAC invitation?

And are these schools in a better place to get a spot in the WAC compared to that of a TXST or UTSA from the Southland?

1). FCS is dead man walking in the west-desire
2). Highest athletic budget in Big Sky, most varsity sports of any BSC member, Title IX compliant
3). AD has publicly stated desire to press with quotes from cornerstone BSC presidents
4). 29,000 students, one of the largest campus populations in FCS
5). 20th largest media market in US
6). Installing Duraspine Fieldturf for new UFL team housed at Hornet Stadium (more upgrades)
7). Network quality lighting and communications infastructure as required by Olympic Trials and NCAA DI Championships
8). 6-8,000 seat arena voted and approved by students

Only one of the three that has a current FBS acceptable football facility already built. 6-8K arena was voted and approved by students so that has been addressed.

Cost containment is the theme, there are potentially four WAC schools within 2-3 hour drive. Advantageous to fans and gate receipts. How many Bobcat or Runners will travel to San Jose or Fresno?

Wow, Sacramento State - if all the above is accurate - is really in a good position to join the WAC.

I typically hear more about TXST, UTSA and thanks to this online community, Cal Poly - than I do Sacramento State. I shared the link to this post on the BobcatFans forum, so they could learn a little more about their "competition" (if you will).

Apparently the WAC Commissioner said that an FCS program would be joining in 2011 and be bowl eligible by 2013. Intriguing as Jafus would say...
