Define "starters" :D

Ok, the best I can do for McNeese is to list the players that were noted as starters in the last press release for 2009. Obviously there are other experienced lettermen that had significant playing time and will fill in nicely in most positions.

Defense

Basically all 11 starters return. One starting LB was hurt early in the year and replaced by a senior but will return for this season. Those starters are as follows with the 2009 height and weight:

And yes, there are NO QB lettermen returning. There is a possible tranfer QB coming in from Tulsa (Jacob Bower 6'4" 235 Grad Student). His Juco highlights are on youtube but at this point him being a Cowboy is not a done deal to the best of my knowlege. There are some RS Freshmen that made an impact in spring training but are not listed above.

I'm not sure what kind of sets your team runs, but with 12 Offensive players and 13 Defensive players seeing the field, you better expect a lot of penalties in 2010!!

I think Nichols will see a lot of the field this year...at least a lot more than last year. We'll be in more two-back sets which will require a traditional fullback. We can use Zeke in that roll as well, but he's the primary tailback and when we want to line up and pound it, we'll see Nichols in there leading him.

I didn't say that, I simply listed who the probable starters would be in 2010 who started a majority if not all of the games in 2009, while maintaining the 11 man rule on both sides of the ball.

Here's a link for the CAA 2010 Preview pages for UNH. Hadn't noticed it before, but they show 8 returning starters on defense, and six starters lost. Have to go with the six lost, so 5 returning on D, and 6 on offense.

I'm never sure what the SOP is for determining returning starters. A better stat is starters lost, which generally is comprised of the seniors who were primary starters the previous year.

Different schools seem to figure all this a little differently, just as they do returning, and lost lettermen. Villanova awarded only 41 letters last year, while Richmond gave out 72.

No doubt it is difficult to analyze a team by just the number of returning starters. It doesn't always acknowledge the return of a starter from the prior season who has been out for injury or other reasons. And it doesn't acknowledge how many subs were getting nearly as many snaps as a starter. And it doesn't address when a very talented player is moving from back-up to starter.

For example, Tony Moss ranked UNH lower than most and the primary reason I saw was the number of starters returning, losing Scott Sicko at TE and the overall competitiveness of the CAA. But let me add some info that IMHO makes the only six starters on offense returning less significant than its face value.


Terrance Fox returns at the WR/RB hybrid slot that UNH uses in its offense. Fox was a starter during the 2nd half of the 2008 season and was becoming an impact player.
One of the significant losses on the OL was the graduation of Center Tom Neill. But Chris Zarkoskie started the first three games of 2009 at center before getting hurt when Neill moved from tackle to the center position he manned the prior year.
Chris Jeannot moves from #2 TE to #1. Jeannot is bigger than Sicko, probably just as athletic, has played significant minutes and put up huge numbers during a game Sicko missed due to injury.
Joey Orlando, if not a starter at WR by the end of 2009, was getting as many plays as the other receivers. Other returning receivers Chris Chandler, Mickey Mangieri and Mike Greene also got consistent reps during the 2009 season. And a highly regarded receiver Manny Asam comes off his redshirt.
The OL is deeper and more experienced than last season.
Returning RB's Sean Jellison and Dontra Peters had significant reps during the 2009 season.




I think it was GannonFan who made a comment a couple of years ago about how UNH has an offensive scheme that works and they manage to get kids who fit that scheme and that provides continuity. Add that to the return of Fox, talented "subs" like Orlando and Jeannot becoming starters and a deeper, more experienced OL. That's why this Wildcat fan is cautiously optimistic for the coming season for the offensive side of the ball.

There were fewer losses on the defensive side of the ball, but there appears to be some budding impact players ready to step up, much like Jeannot on offense.

Agree that Moss was off-base on UNH. His research was pretty shallow, and some of his method was based on years-old assumptions.

I have UNH with W&M as the probable competitors for the runner-up spot in the CAA, with UD, JMU, UR and Maine right behind as the possible breakthroughs. The Wildcats and the Tribe both had alot of depth last year. I think the biggest question for those two is whether they can replicate that depth this year, and of course the Tribe has to produce good play from a new QB.
