Some quick notes on trends:

1) Fear the CAA! Quite a few CAA teams still do not have an FBS team on their schedule; there are only three CAA vs. ACC matchups this year, and one of those is scheduled conspicuously late (Richmond @ Virginia on 9/4; JMU @ Virginia Tech 9/11; and the Tribe at UNC on October 30)
2) Fear the champions! Both teams from last year's championship game currently lack an FBS opponent this year. I would note Montana has a recent trend of not scheduling FBS teams.
3) The SEC takes no chances: Although they're scheduling FCS teams, they seem to prefer to do this much later in the season (vs. the bulk of the games in the first couple of weeks).
4) Hurray for Mizzou! The McNeese State/Missouri game looks to be the only neutral-site game period; all other games are FCS traveling to FBS.
5) No green for the little guy. The smaller conferences don't get the payday: Although they may get a few games against FBS teams, smaller conferences like the Patriot, Pioneer, SWAC and Northeast generally don't have FBS games on their schedule (at least not yet). Whether this is by design or fortune, I'll readily admit to not having a clue.
6) Fly me to the moon! There are some wacky distances being traveled - Charleston Southern at Hawaii will get the most frequent flyer miles, but there are some other cross-country matchups too, like Idaho State at Georgia, The Citadel at Arizona, and Nicholls State at San Diego State.

First off, great compilation! This is definitely something we could all use and I think it will be very helpful as we get closer to the season and in-season! Keep up the quality posts Squeal!

These late season games interest me. Appy and Weber may both be in line for playoff bids. While they may have their bids secured at that point for the most part, you wonder how these teams will handle the games...

The smaller conferences don't get the payday: Although they may get a few games against FBS teams, smaller conferences like the Patriot, Pioneer, SWAC and Northeast generally don't have FBS games on their schedule (at least not yet). Whether this is by design or fortune, I'll readily admit to not having a clue.

The Pioneer can not play the games because they are not counters for FBS opposition and the NEC does not make the cut either, though we did see a Western Michigan v Central Connecticut game last year or two years ago.

Several SWAC schools still have an opening in their slates with 10-game schedules. Not sure if they'll ever fill those dates or not, but I do not think they are because they can save $$$...

One thing I've noticed is that in recent years the MAC and Sun Belt don't play many games against FCS teams. And when they do they usually play FCS teams that don't have a history of great success. I don't know if it's because they need to play BCS league teams to make money. Maybe that's it. But you're not going to see Troy play, say, Appalachian State or Western Michigan play Villanova. At least that's what I think I'm seeing.

I think it has to do with a few things, at least as it pertains to the Sun Belt...

1) The going rate for the Sun Belt teams to play at FBS facilities has gone up substantially in the last few years. These teams are getting $1M to play Big Six conference squads in some cases, money that some of these schools need.

2) Facility upgrades throughout the Sun Belt. The SBC teams are getting more home-and-homes (or 2-for-1s) with teams from the Big Six. The SBC teams are even beating a few of these teams (notably Troy doing the damage in recent years), but there's a reason the bigger names are going there. May also have to do with cutting costs by making short bus treks.

3) FBS schools have driven up the rate of buying an FCS game. Like our point #1, the prices continue to raise substantially. Teams you were getting for $150k a few years ago are pulling in $350-400k, even for in-state games. The Big Six are scheduling more FCS teams, which is raising the cost up. The MAC and SBC teams are turning to each other instead.

4) Fewer conference games. Sun Belt added Western Kentucky and will soon be adding South Alabama. I think they are altering their scheduling with USA, so you do not play everyone each year, but one fewer OOC date.

I know, bad form to bump one's own thread, but with the new conferences possibly forming in FBS, wanted to highlight a few of these games again:

Missouri State (MVC) at Kansas State (Big 12, 6-6)
Suddenly, the Bears could have a good shot at this. If (and I'm saying if!) Nebraska and Missouri really have bolted for the Big Ten, and Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, the Oklahoma Schools and either Colorado or Baylor goes the PAC 10/16, K State could find itself without a conference. Obviously the alignments won't have kicked in, but what will the Wildcats really be playing for? The Bears from Springfield could really kick the Cats when they're down.

Northern Iowa (MVC) at Iowa State (Big 12, 7-6)
See the above, only add a tougher MVC team against a weaker Big XII team.

North Dakota State (MVC) at Kansas (Big 12, 5-7)
See the above.

South Dakota State (MVC) at Nebraska (Big 12, 10-4)
Will the conference stuff be a distraction for Nebraska? Probably as good an opportunity for the Jackrabbits to sneak away from Lincoln with a win.
