View Full Version : Roy Oswalt Requests Trade

Time for the Astros to realize the problems that they have because of poor draft classes and decision-making by former GM Tim Purpura.

Yes friends, it's time to implode the major league club, go cheap, get some prospects from other teams!

Roy Oswalt, the way he has been pitching, should net at least two (if not three) solid prospects. Based on the farm system situation, I'd try to find a middle infielder and two pitchers.

The agent for Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt phoned owner Drayton McLane on Thursday and requested the ace right-hander be traded, general manager Ed Wade confirmed Friday.

Oswalt's contract with the Astros expires at the end of the 2011 season, but the club has a $16 million option for 2012. He's making $15 million this year and is scheduled to earn $16 million next year. He has a full no-trade clause.

I'd love to see the Braves pick him up. The Braves have three phenomenal pitching prospects right now (not to mention Tommy Hanson already at the major league level). The Astros are so youth-starved that they might be willing to take a prospect or two in exchange for their ace.

You have to admit that a rotation of Hudson, Hanson, Oswalt, Jurrjens, and Lowe wouldn't bee too shabby.

I expect the Braves will be players in the trade market later in the summer. They are just one of the few teams around that has the minor league depth to land some of these bigger names.

The problem with this, as I understand from what I have heard since the winter, is that Drayton McLane would be open to trading Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman, but... He still thinks of them as premier players, big name guys that bring in ticket sales, and as such he wants trade value from 5-6 years ago, and so teams are hesitant at best to pull the trigger. Not that they aren't good players, I'm not saying that at all, and wouldn't mind the Phils picking up Oswalt and finally ridding themselves of Moyer or Kendrick... but the asking price is just too high right now, especially since you're going to have to take on his 15 million dollar contract. Maybe as we get closer to July the price will go down, but I don't see it happening in the next week or two. I don't think McLane is ready to pull the trigger and concede the team is out of it and hurt ticket sales.

Along that same line, if you look at the numbers for MLB seasons since the 162 game schedule in '62, historically speaking if you aren't .500 or better by June 1, you're not making the playoffs. So maybe he'll wake up sooner rather than later, because just glancing at the standings I would already write off Boston, Baltimore, ChiSox, KC, Cleveland, Seattle, NY Mets, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Houston, and Arizona. They're not going to catch the teams in front of them. I know there are a lot of Boston fans who may disagree, the team is decent, but 8.5 behind Tampa Bay and Boston isn't going to get good enough at the same time Tampa Bay gets bad enough for Boston to catch them.

Just my humble opinion.

Starting pitching is the last thing the Braves need to go for. A left fielder would be nice. I doubt Hinkse is the year long solution. Glaus is performing after the bad start, and he and Hinkse are acceptable at first base, especially since the big name at first, AG, is on a suprising team so far this year.

Problem is, outfield is the weakest it's been in decades, so the price for a good one is steep.

Escobar better start hitting, too. I know he's been on the DL, but a month and a half of sucking is more than just a slump.
