Tremendous call on the fake punt by the Mountaineers. Although Georgia helped by not rushing anyone--which I couldn't believe--but that was good aggressive play calling. Also good to see another eastern team get back in to the power groups--and 9 starters on offense due back next year...

The Big East's best beat the SEC's best. And probably would lay beating on the best ACC team. The MWC commissioner may commence licking Mike Trangheses' balls at this point. Swofford should too....

Actually maybe they should lick Rich Rodriguez's nuts. They seem big enough for all of said parties...

I think that was one of those playes where the kicker has the green light to go if it's there. If not, kick it. I can't see WV CALLING a fake put, up by 3, that deep in their own territory.

Heck, If I was a coach, I would have cut him if he didn't take that one. Every Georgia player was at least 20 yards downfield when he took off.

I don't disagree that the punter had the 'green light' but the coach still has to give the 'green light' to him--some coaches are such control freaks their players can't stray from the called play regardless of changed circumstances on the field.

Watching that play last night, my friend and I both remarked before the snap that UGA had virtually nobody on the line. I guess WVU's punter thought the same thing!

Great game by West Virginia but they had a 3-0 advantage in the giveaway takeaway stat and still only won by three points. What happened is that they shocked Georgia early to run out to a big lead then hung on for dear life. I think they'd be competetive in the SEC but I don't think they'd win it.

The Big East was, by my count, 1 - 3 in bowls and 4 - 13 against other BCS conferences in 2005. It is a definite cut below the other BCS leagues.

They won the only game that mattered. FSU lost to PSU and finished the year with 5 losses, and the ACC's highest ranked team was thoroughly embarassed by a team that Georgia beat.

At this point it's Pretty hard to make a good argument to take a bid away. Not when they won their BCS bowl in what was basically an away game.

I agree with the bid part. They did do a lot to support keeping an automatic bid for the Big East. But I think it's still clearly below the other BCS conferences overall. It's kind of a "tweener" conference now.

I've always believed you have to look at the whole season rather than just the bowls. The ACC did suffer some in the bowls, but I think if you look at the whole season you'll find that the Big East had by far the worst record among BCS leagues in nonconference games with other BCS leagues.

Here's a good link to look at conference performance:

http://www.colleyrankings.com/curconf.html (http://)

Here's the nonconference performances of the BCS leagues, with performance against other BCS leagues in parenthesis:

Big 10: 29 - 10 (10 - 10)
ACC: 29 - 12 (13 -9)
Big 12: 28 - 8 (8 - 5)
Pac 10: 21 - 9 (7 - 7)
SEC: 23 - 12 (7 - 9)
Big East: 14 - 16 (5 - 12)

If LSU had played against Georgia like it played against Miami, Georgia would not have beaten the Tigers. Georgia only had 264 yards of offense against LSU...and only 180 after two quick strikes early in the first quarter. But LSU made some key mistakes to get out of the game.

I think LSU was the most talented team in the SEC this season. I think when the Tigers were at their best they were better than any other team in the SEC at its best. I think they probably would've been a more difficult opponent for West Virginia.

But...if ifs and buts were candy and nuts....

Excluding last season because the conference was in a totally different configuration, I think that the BE was the worst it could possibly be this season. Virtually every team but Rutgers was loaded with freshmen and underclassmen. USF, UConn and Cincinatti were very young teams. WVU finished ranked 5 and 6 and Louisville finished ranked 20th. That's much better than what happened last season with Pitt, who shouldn't have been in the Fiesta Bowl.
I think that Trev Alberts was right. Mike Tranghese should have sent Louisville to the Fiesta Bowl and let Conference USA have the money. Lord knows the Big East isn't short on cash.

WVU returns 9 starters on offense, Louisville returns pretty much everyone and has one of the top QBs in the nation. Between Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Brian Brohm, the conference should have several Heisman candidates for at least a portion of the season. Pitt has a top 5 recruiting class right now..
I think that they should recover nicely.
