Update on the Video Scoreboard at Whitmire Stadium

Construction continues on the new video scoreboard at the south end of E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters field on-campus in Cullowhee. Just over a week after the concrete foundation was poured, the steel frame has been erected on site over the past two days. Plans are for the frame to be painted purple on Friday with the video board slated to arrive in Cullowhee on Monday as the installation process continues.

Officials at Western Carolina anticipate having the board up and operational by the football team's annual Spring Game on Saturday, May 1.

Good news. I believe ASU, GSU, UTC, Citadel, and now WCU have video boards in the SoCon. Anyone else?

They're especially nice when darkness falls and when displaying a "positive message":

Very nice. Cal Poly installed a Daktronics Video board last year and it really improved the game day experience.

I'm sure that Wagner would have pulled the plug after Brandon Newsome and Elon ran roughshod over under and around the 'Cats.

Wonder if they could get it a little closer to the field? The location might make it a bit distracting for kickers, but it is a huge improvement over their current scoreboard. I'm suprised they didn't have ASU instead of guest on it. :>)

Why the smack talk when the subject is about a video board? obviously you guys are very insecure and can't come up with anything positive to talk about Elon football.

Off topic somewhat but honestly when I hear Bob Waters Field it always gives me chills. Great coach and some great games between the two SoCon purple teamsxnodx

What is the total cost?

half a million give or take. 5 area "fatcats" from the Sapphire/Cashiers, NC area donated $120,000 right off the top. It also helps that our men's golf coach is the Catamount Club director and has PLENTY of contacts in the Sapphire/Cashiers/Highlands area due to the enormous amount of private clubs and golf courses.

I'll bet that it is closer to $1,000,000 than $500,000.

I hate that I sometimes find myself watching the video board rather than the actual field when I'm at ASU games. Though, it is very useful for replays.

I would imagine being behind the south endzone will keep it out of the sun, thus making the picture crisper, and probably extending its life.

Nice board. It's good to see the improvements to Whitmire as it's gone from a rather bland stadium to a rather nice one in recent years.xthumbsupx

way, way better than our mini-tron (that's what we call it).

if you want to see a freaking AMAZING video board and unbelievable sound system... go see a game at Liberty. GOOD GOD (no pun intended). it easily rivals the brand new board at WVU and that's a 60,000 seat stadium from a BCS conference. very impressive.
