Another series in the bag for UTSA - psst, don't let TXST know about this...

UTSA and Arizona State will play a home-and-home series during the 2016 and '18 seasons.
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA and Arizona State have agreed to a home-and-home football series in 2016 and 2018, Athletics Director Lynn Hickey announced on Friday afternoon.

The games will be played on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at the Alamodome and on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

“Much like the Baylor series, we are adding another quality opponent in Arizona State to our future schedules,” head coach Larry Coker said. “Coach Erickson has put together a great program and the Sun Devils will present a tremendous challenge for our players. At the same time, we are very pleased to bring a team of that caliber to the Alamodome for a home game.”

And Arizona...

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA has agreed to play Arizona in a three-game series from 2013-15, athletics director Lynn Hickey announced on Tuesday. The two teams will meet in Tucson, Ariz., on Sept. 14, 2013, at the Alamodome on Sept. 6, 2014, and again at arizona Stadium on Sept. 5, 2015.

This marks the third contract to be signed with an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent, as UTSA unveiled on April 9 a home-and-home series with Arizona State to be played on Sept. 17, 2016, in the Alamodome and on Sept. 1, 2018, in Tempe, Ariz. The Roadrunners also announced in March a three-game series with Baylor that will be played on Sept. 9, 2017, at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, on Sept. 8, 2018, in San Antonio and on Sept. 7, 2019, back in Waco.

“What an exciting time for UTSA football,” head coach Larry Coker said. “We feel like we are putting together some challenging future schedules for our program, and to be able to bring teams like Baylor, Arizona and Arizona State into the Alamodome is something our fans can really enjoy. Arizona is a top-flight program and Mike Stoops has done a great job with that program over the past few years. It will be a tremendous challenge to play a team of that caliber, but it will only make us better.”

Coker, Hickey and several other UTSA brass flew to ODU to take notes from another upstart...

Three years ago, Old Dominion football head coach Bobby Wilder was the guy asking all the questions. Now, it seems, he's the guy with most of the answers.

At least, that's what Larry Coker thinks.

Remember Coker? He surprisingly stepped in as head coach of the vaunted Miami Hurricanes in 2001. He then rattled off a record 24 consecutive victories to start his college head coaching career and was an overtime loss to Ohio State from winning back-to-back national titles.

Now, Coker is starting over at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a school with 29,000 undergraduates that is starting a football a program from scratch.

A straight up four-game home-and-home with Colorado State...also note the change for the Southern Utah game in 2012...

The Roadrunners will host the Rams on Oct. 3, 2015, and Sept. 29, 2018, at the Alamodome and travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for games on Oct. 1, 2016, and Sept. 30, 2017.

UTSATailgaters is reporting that the school is nearing deals with Air Force, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State...if they can land these, more instant credibility for the UTSA program.

I'm sorry - but I just have a hard time believing there are many, if ANY potential FCS to FBS programs (not including South Alabama) that could potentially land such a schedule...

As UTSATailgaters had mentioned months earlier, Air Force of the Mountain West, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State of the Big XII South are all in talks with UTSA. Sources beyond the UTSA athletic department were able to confirm talks with each of the programs.

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA officials announced Thursday that they have agreed to a home-and-home series with Louisiana Tech. The Roadrunners will face the Western Athletic Conference member Bulldogs on Sept. 26, 2015, in Ruston, La., and on Sept. 24, 2016, at the Alamodome.

This is the seventh contract UTSA has unveiled with an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school.

I find it hard to believe that FBS schools would consider a home/home with a FCS school with a fledgling program unless some huge financial deals were offered to get them interested.

Those schools signed the contract with the notion that UTSA would be an FBS program, not an FCS school.

With that in mind, the game was VERY attractive, especially for the out of state schools that want to have a presence in Texas for recruiting and have plenty of Texas players on their squad.

UTSA has a nice facility (the Alamodome) and for the in-state Texas schools, it provides a chance to play "locally" in front of their alumni around the state while limiting expenses.

Another huge get...VIRGINIA from the ACC...

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA officials announced Wednesday that they have agreed to a home-and-home series with Virginia. The Roadrunners will face the Atlantic Coast Conference member Cavaliers on Nov. 2, 2013, in Charlottesville, Va., and on Nov. 8, 2014, at the Alamodome. The department also released that the 2013 home game with Houston has been moved back a week to Sept. 28.

“We’re continuing to do an outstanding job of scheduling quality future opponents,” head coach Larry Coker said. “Virginia has been a major player in the ACC for years and we’re thrilled to be able to announce a home-and-home series with a program of that caliber. Bringing teams like Virginia and the other FBS schools we’ve announced to the Alamodome for home games really gives our fans and the City of San Antonio something to be excited about.”

If UTSA doesn't become a FBS program will the contracts become null and void?

If UTSA doesn't become a FBS program will the contracts become null and void?

I am curious to how UTSA has worded the contracts. Some of the games are set up where UTSA is meant to be an FCS opponent for an FBS school. Other than that, many of the games do have to be UTSA as an FBS counter.

The two possibilities are that the contracts become null & void OR the second possibility is that UTSA would have to buy out of the contract or pay some sort of penalty.

Either way, UTSA has plenty at stake in getting into FBS. Their AD has got to move them forward into moving up or it could be problematic.

UTSA's scheduling has been incredibly impressive... they are being very aggressive about getting the best competition they can to their home field. Will be interesting to see how well they play and the kind of support they get, but if they can get this off the ground they will be very very attractive to either the WAC, Sun Belt or even potentially CUSA

I've said it before, the schedule that UTSA is putting together is a much more slate than many of the schools in the C-USA, MAC and Sun Belt are able to put together, as far as home-and-home arrangements.

Someone in the TXST fan base said that their school could put together just as good a schedule. Unfortunately, I would have to disagree. TXST would probably be able to get a few home-and-homes with schools in the Sun Belt and C-USA, but UTSA is going a step further with Pac-10 and Big 12. Those conferences have not always been so willing to give C-USA and SBC schools home-and-homes, so why would they to an upstart like TXST with an even smaller stadium (and not immediately within a major TV market) than UTSA?

Several developments at the UTSA Golf Tournament...

UTSA will have a news conference at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to announce that it has reached an agreement with the Northside Independent School District to have its football workouts at Farris Stadium.

UTSA also will announce Tuesday that Bob Wills, founder of the PM Group, has donated $50,000 to the Roadrunners for football scholarships.

With those heavyweights donating, I can see UTSA being an attractive addition to an FBS conference for all sports. I don't see any other start-up FCS program with that much going for them. Very few established FCS programs that are thinking about moving up have that kind of cash flow.

After reading the article is seems the local corporations are a little slow in giving money to UTSA for football. $3 million isn't that much money considering how many corporations are in San Antonio.

True..but the goal is 15 million by 2016.
So we're a bit on schedule. Since UTSA signed with Nelligan Sports Marketing [who incidentally markets for Rutgers, West Virginia, other BCS schools], we expect to hit that goal. I personally don't see it that easy for any start up to get committments from the business community, coach, hold clinics, recruit, set up practices, get facilities. So to get what we have [from the alamodome to the 3 plus million], to go in the direction we are, and to do it in this economy..bodes extremely well for UTSA and San Antonio.

[And yes, that is a business journal from Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota]

btw - not taking a cheap shot at Lamar or Beaumont, but apart from hearing about the jucos that were recruited, the renovation to the field, and the scoreboard, I havent seen any news from that part of the state. Got any updates?

$15 million by 2016 seems very doable. I wasn't sure how hard UTSA was pushing for donations at this stage. Also, having the Alamodome available is a big plus and it relieves the pressure of needing big donations up front to get the football program going.

As for as Lamar is concerned, I think with them announcing early on they were going to play in the SLC and not publicly talking about going FBS, they are intentionally keeping a low profile. From what I've read Lamar will wait 4 or 5 years to see how things are shaping up before deciding if they want to go FBS or not.

Lamar got $7.5 million in donations in two years as by law 25% of the funding of the complex had to come by private donations. Lamar will use bonds, fees and etc to pay for the rest of the $30 million price tag.

We've signed a few FBS transfers, signed a couple of contracts with FBS schools to play in the future. The complex is nearing completion as they are now putting down the fieldturf and working on the suites.

Agree with Centexguy as Lamar will take a less aggressive approach about going FBS compared to UTSA. You guys have a great AD and a big name Head Coach and your school is in a large market has a large student population and there is no competing with the NFL or other FBS schools in San Antonio for entertainment dollars.

If Lamar was in UTSA's position I would hope our leadership would take a similar path as your school as done. Appears UTSA is on the fast track to FBS which is probably best for your institution.

Until recently...Lamar had a less than aggressive approach with promoting their football team. Not sure if it was the change in AD (much needed), but there's more enthusiasm behind pushing the product...

The local media have been...the school's athletic department until the last month or so, had not. It's a nice change of pace and one I'm willing to take credit for after blasting them several times!

I'm pretty sure if UTSA were under the gun, the way you guys were, we'd make up the seven and half mil up in two years too. Either way, its good to hear that southeast Texas will once again represent in the SLC. There's plenty of talent in the area that needs to stay in Texas. :)

Agree if UTSA wasn't playing in the Alamodome and you needed the donations for a football complex you probably wouldn't have difficulty raising the money. Didn't mean to imply you couldn't. If I did I hope this post clears up my opinion.
