Another posters on the thread about Jacksonville and FGCU said the word is that Stetson would leave the A-Sun because of finances. Looks to me that the program is starting a feasibility check into having football at the school.

Looks like a Pioneer Football League fit. If several more Florida schools add non-scholarship football, could they get a conference going?

DELAND -- Stetson University -- are you ready for some football?

That question may get a quick answer as university officials are gathering information and evaluating the feasibility of starting a Football Championship Subdivision (formally Division I-AA) nonscholarship program.

Athletics Director Jeff Altier said Thursday he is forming a select committee to evaluate a recommendation by a university committee that football be brought back to the school. The Hatters last played football in 1956, and Altier said it usually takes a minimum of three years from when a decision is made to start a program and actually play the first game.

It won't happen. It's hard to sell non-scholly football in this economy, let alone any football at all.

There's quite a few up-starts right now...

Just next year, we have several at all levels of NCAA and NAIA competition. In addition to Stetson examining it, we got Cleveland State doing the same.

It may seem to make little sense, but the fact of the matter remains - schools are doing it!
