Latest news is that the New York franchise is moving to Hartford, Conn.

The speculation is finally over. Hartford will have a professional football team beginning this fall. In an announcement made this morning at Rentschler Field in East Hartford—which will be home for the team—officials from the United Football League (UFL) along with Governor Jodi Rell announced that the New York Sentinels, one of the four charter teams in the USL’s initial voyage in 2009, will be relocating to the Hartford area for the upcoming season.

Word is that the Bay Area team in California will move to Sacramento and that San Antonio is probably one of the favorites for expansion. The league is planning to play 10 games next year, so they probably want to get to six teams soon, so each can play 5 home/5 away.

The league, which is still mulling a two-team expansion for the upcoming season, also operates teams in Orlando, Las Vegas and the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area. The latter team is expected to move from the Bay Area to Sacramento in the near future. Cities expected to receive prime consideration for expansion include San Antonio; Omaha; Salt Lake City; Louisville; Portland, Ore.; Los Angeles; and Mexico City. All fit into the UFL’s mantra: Locate in markets under-served by the NFL.

For what it's worth, the league continues to get quality former NFL head coaches and assistants to lead the teams in the league...

Chris Palmer is the head coach of the new Hartford team, coming on the heels of the announcement of Jay Gruden heading up the Orlando franchise.

Dennis Green and Jim Fassel were the other two involved.

If T. Boone Pickens wants a team, look for Oklahoma City to get one. Apparently, he was in the mix the last time the league was looking (as in when it started!).

Don't bring a team to San Antonio. We don't care about seeing the Sentinels or the Locos.

How'd the previous efforts with CFL and other leagues go in San Antonio?

No, no, no! If the football team wants to take on a historical name, then they'll choose either the Knights or Charter Oaks which were the minor league teams back in the 60's and 70's. Colgate's Marv Hubbard played in Hartford before hitting the big time in Oakland.

Just a couple of days ago, there was an article in the Hartford Courant about Howard Baldwin getting involved with the AHL franchise. There was discussion about reviving the Whalers name for that team if Baldwin took over. IIRC, Baldwin was the GM of the Whalers when they were in the NHL.

The Tuskers will play all of their home games in Orlando this year, instead of playing one game at the Trop. The Rays sold their piece of the team.

Exactly... Minor League Football does not work in San Antonio. Hell, AFL1 didn't work in Austin either

The people interested in the UFL in San Antonio do not want to negatively impact the UTSA football program, so may not come to fruition...

The UFL’s six-week season was played in the fall last year and ended Thanksgiving weekend. With games scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights, the UFL in San Antonio would face the daunting challenge of competing against high school football.

A UFL team at the Alamodome could also be a headache for officials attempting to schedule and market UTSA football games. The Roadrunners are set to begin play in 2011.

“We wouldn’t want to get involved in anything that would hurt UTSA,” Mery said.
