Hey hey hey guys - let's be fair here - awesome opening ceremony at the Beijing Games, even if they video enhanced the fireworks, interviewed their hostesses in the buff, spent about a billion dollars (just none on the labor involved), etc.

If "Own the Podium" refers to total medal count, then perhaps Canada (or some other country) has a fighting chance.

If it refers to who actually owns the podium, then if you flip it over I believe you'll see "Made in China"...

I can't wait for this crap to be over. The WO should be three or four events. Skiing/snowboarding, ice fishing, curling, and hockey. That's it. All of the stupid variations just make for meaningless ways to crown more people champions. I mean honestly, look at the subjectivity in most of these sports. The judge from Uzbekistan gave you a 5.0, but the judge from the USSR gave you a 5.5. You lose! In one of those stupid skiing events, the guy that was the fastest down the hill didn't win because he didn't get enough style points. Again, that pesky USSR judge gave low marks! What a crock.

Figure skating is not a sport. Neither is ice dancing.

Skating really fast in a circle, regardless of the distance, is not cool. Take your skates off and sprint like a man.

You mean what is it with the South Korean coach?

China gets in the head of South Korean speedskaters

During a practice session for the South Korean short-track speedskating women, a member of the Chinese delegation sat in the stands, taping the South Koreans. The South Korean coach, Guang-Bok Choi, was upset.

"Stop it. Don't do that," Choi yelled before hurling a couple of bottles, which hit seats below the Chinese cameraman.

That's right. Choi threw water bottles. It's perfectly legal for the Chinese to tape the practices, no matter what the South Korean protests...

It's clear that the Chinese had one aim in mind: to get in the head of the South Korean team.

Judging by Choi's reaction, it worked. Our family are not friends with anyone on the speedskating squads. Winter Olympics are not our thing. Haven't watched a second of it.

Like the IPCC has been saying for almost 20 years; the ocean heats, record heat taking moisture from the ground, now record amounts of moisture in the atmosphere hemmed in, storms get more violent (floods, snow, etc.), wildlife and growing patterns all change... we are in a wild time and probably going to get wilder. We had the largest February snowfall ever recorded in Chicago last week. Hot/cold/wet/dry, hard to predict anything these days except when the extremes come they come harder than ever. Man, if that massive icemelt happens (I think Glacier National has about 1/4 of the glaciers it had even 90 years ago) and the methane in it is released... grab your waders. Just pray wiser decisions will prevail xprayx

Maybe they just need better machines to make snow and ice when it is needed for Olympics.

I believe Warren Miller's constant nobbing of Whistler/Blackcomb in his skiing flicks has contributed to Vancouver landing this gig. Not that they are not an attractive host city, because they surely are, but for snow quality... it's a sucky choice.

Further inland in BC there is a resort called Big White, been there and done that. Real snow, and possibility of real light (champagne) snow. Beats the crap out of the wet spring like stuff you find in the coastal resorts.

Salt Lake was nearly perfect, Denver maybe better except for the relative distance to the best Colorado resorts (Steamboat, Vail).

How are you going to prove wrongdoing by the Chinese government? Once a government sanctions forging, the forged documentation is the official government document. The underage girls are in fact of legal age, with the documents to prove it. They have the full support of their government. xlolx

I agree. I've skied Whistler/Blackcomb three times. It was built up by Intrawest Corp (the real business interest behind everything you see there - except for Whiski Jack's, of course) and it looks just like Mte. Tremblant, Quebec. It's sort of a fake Chamonix or Aspen.

The only good time to ski Whistler is late July. You do the moguls on the Hortsman glacier on top of Blackcomb (a T-Bar runs all rear 'round) then you go down to the pool where it's 86 degrees out and get hammered.

Guys guys guys - can't we all just get along?

Really, this is just a language barrier thing: the Chinese say "young women", we say "3rd-graders". The Chinese consider it the "perky little pixie" look, while we describe it as the "starved North Korean peasant" look. "Trained athletes" vs. "Forced labor". "Future government official hostess" vs., well, "future government official hostess".

Either way, we're all describing the same thing, regardless of age. See - it's just a matter of what words we use...

In Men's Gymnastics, yes. Events like pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, etc.

Women's Gymnastics doesn't have all those upper-body strength events. It's more about nimbleness and grace, which erode as you get older and bigger.

3-1 win. Fairly sloppy, gave up too many odd-man rushes. Swiss aren't dangerous enough to make it count, but Canada or Russia will hurt you significantly if that happens

It'll be nice to get everyone a little practice time together now, maybe work out some of the kinks. A more consistent effort against Norway on Thursday will inspire a great deal more confidence

Does anyone know if there are age limits in the Winter Games?
- Bobsled (minimum of 14 years old)
- Boxing (17-32)
- Diving (minimum of 14)
- Equestrian (16 or older)
- Figure skating (15 by July 1 of previous year)
- Gymnastics (must be 16 years old in Olympic year)
- Judo (15 or older), luge (16 or older)
- Luge (15 by June 30 of current season)
- Soccer (under 23)
- Team handball (over 18)
- Weightlifting (17 or older)
- Wrestling (must be at least 17 on day of Opening Ceremonies).

There maybe others.

They tried to show commercials during the Canada-Norway game last night on CNBC but the game wasn't taking commercial breaks. They'd come back from a 30 second spot the puck would have already been dropped. xeyebrowx

I remember watching men's ice skating with family 20 years ago and they were creepy/scary then, what happened?

Women's downhill turned out well and Men's halfpipe qualifying looking well for the 1st two US guys (White, Vito).

I can't figure out what happened to male figure skating either. I mean it used to be that only the heartiest and manliest of men would feel the need to perform such intricate dances on ice.

It's just not like the good old days when you and your buddies would sit around with a doobie and a rack of beer and score a routine performed by a man in a beautiful, tight fitting, colorful costume.

I do not follow the singles figure skating. Normally I do not follow any at all but a local guy was on a pairs team this year so I tried to tune in to watch him. My favorite sports to watch are: luge, bobsled, skiing (all kinds including cross country), snowboarding & speed skating. I know all the ones that have high odds for crashes. Good thing the kids are in bed before some of these get started. Yikes there were some crashes in the down hill last night. Was surprised some of those ladies walked away from them.

6-1 win for the US over Norway. Better effort from the USA, and I liked the compete level through the end of the game. Malone is having a strong tournament, and I'm becoming a huge Backes fan

Too many odd-man rushes being given up, that will kill them against teams that can actually score (like, say, Canada). They seemed to have a tough time scoring, especially problematic with the importance of goal-differential in standings

As big as Sunday's game with the hosts feels, it really doesn't mean too much. I'd be willing to give up the victory if I get the feeling we can compete with a team like Canada. I wouldn't mind OT for the extra point in the standings either...

If we win, we don't really gain anything. If we lose, so long as it's not a blowout, we can claim a certain degree of moral victory. Normally, I disdain the moral victory, but at this point I want to know this team can compete with the Canadas and Russias of the tournament. Keep it tight, play a strong game, let me know we can play at that level, and save it for the medal rounds, when it counts xnodx

Remember the World Juniors from January. Canada wins a close one over the US in the group stages, then the Americans take gold with an OT victory xreadx xnodx

We'll have at least 6 points to compare against other contenders for that last quarterfinal spot, so the more OT over the next two days, the better :D

Yeah...but a win (as far as I can tell from what I see online) would guarantee the US team a top 4 spot thus saving them from having to play an extra game...I mean more than likely they could just get into overtime and move on, but a win guarantees it! But, you are right...all that matters is who wins last!

Ryan Kesler you magnificent SOB :D

In spite of their striking resemblence to the Rangers' uniforms, those 1960 throwbacks were pretty sharp

Happy with the win, especially happy with the bye that comes with it. The extra day off could be huge for us. Also important is that our Quarterfinal matchup will be against the winner of either SUI/BLR or SVK/NOR, a far cry from having to get through the Czechs or Canada to get to the medal games. To finish first overall out of the groups, Sweden has to beat Finland by less than 6 goals or the Finns have to win in OT

Even wilder, if Canada wins their next game (Germany), they then get Russia in the Quarters xeekx

Ugly, but it counts

USA on to the Semis, will play the winner of Finland/Czech Rep. on Friday

Only got to see the 3rd period but I love that they're doing what it takes to win...like blocking 27 shots (which makes the shots on goal discrepency look bigger than it really was).

I guess I'd rather play the Czech Republic than Finland, but either them will be a tough game. So nice not to have to see Canada, Russia, or Sweden until a medal game.

Can't wait for the Canada/Russia game tonight. Should be a great game. Hard to believe that one of those teams won't even play for a medal.

They're certainly making an example out of Russia right now. 7-3 after 2 periods. Definitely didn't see that coming.

[QUOTE]The dirty unspoken secret of the Olympics is that for every frightening, bone-rattling, face-scraping wipeout, there's a thrilled athlete whose road to glory just got a little bit smoother. The trick is to not seem too thrilled about it.

Lindsey Vonn has become the Bode Miller of these Olympics. She was supposed to win all these medals after she was talked up by the skiing community. Yes, she did win a bronze and a gold, but that really isn't dominating the sport which is what she was forecasted to do. Feel kinda bad for her, people are being pretty hard on the girl when she was already battling a bad shin injury without even having run a single race. She's a trooper in my mind, and class act athlete. So I guess the Bode comparison doesn't hold much water, he was a jackass, but somehow cleaned up his act this time around.

Not sure I buy that -- most of that hype was media build-up. She's a charger, not a finesse skier, so she's better suited to the downhill competitions over slalom. She hasn't placed in the slalom events in World Cup events this year, so I don't know why she's expected to perform differently at the Olympics. Plus, she broke her finger on that run a couple days ago, which doesn't help things.

Doesn't help, either, that Whistler is crap snow to ski on. Those courses have been borderline trash at times. Wet, heavy snow simply can't compare to the powder you get further inland. That's why Salt Lake City was such a great Olympic venue -- they have the best powder on the continent.

Watching these games has reminded me of what a great time the '02 games were. When SLC hosts the games again, I highly recommend you make the trip.

Hockey final is US 6-1. The Finn's scored a power play goal against backup goaltender Tim Thomas on a penalty that one talking head said was only called because of the 6-0 score.

Final

A good a performance as they could have hoped for. Just blitzed the Finns and didn't let up until the Finns gave up

1 more win :)

After being down 3-0 to Canada, Slovakia almost mounted a great comeback (I was sure Pavel Demetria was going to stick that rebound in the net with about 30 seconds left). Canada hung on for the 3-2 win though. That sets up a USA/Canada rematch for a gold medal on Sunday.

Should be an outstanding game! Can't wait for Sunday afternoon! One more win fellas!
