Goes to show you how poorly various sites do with FCS level recruits. Can we get some data regarding ratings the last 5 years? Our guys will be happy to line up against anyone's "highly rated" recruits.

On this level or not, "talent" usually gets noticed on these sites these days.

Wrong. I worked for Rivals for 3 years. It's all about who is getting looks from who and getting offers from who. Outside of the top 150 neither site gives a damn about the recruits. I've said it many times before and I'll use this story again. I was following a kid and doing an article on him. He had 0 stars, but I was doing as FCS article on him following his JR year. During the off season he must have sent tape out or something...anyway in one week he picked up offers from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ok. State, and one other school. He went from 0 starts to 5 stars and top 20 recruit in a week according to both sites without playing a game, stepping on a field, doing a work out, attending a camp, or anything.

Needless to say my article was scratched and one of the "big wigs" took him over.

Rivals and Scout don't mean a damn thing. How else can MSU have the top class or two EVERY YEAR and yet they continue to suck year after year.

You should know how TA works. He literally redshirts every freshman (sans maybe 1 or 2). It takes a while to notice a difference, but if you've been paying attention MSU has won one more game each year the last 3 years now.

These rankings aren't surprising in the least based on the recruiting areas of the ranked schools. Rivals and Scout put far more effort evaluating talent in the states of Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri rather than that of Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota (SDSU, NDSU, UNI recruit this state heavily). There is obvious talent in these states, as one could tell from the success of the universities in these areas, yet the recruiting sites just aren't going to bother ranking kids in the areas unless they are getting serious looks from BCS schools.

Case & Point: SDSU has a kid coming in at QB (Austin Sumner) this year who played at the highest level of South Dakota high school football that is 6'5", 215 lbs, can throw the ball 65-70 yard in the air, and, oh yah, he is 78th all time nationally in passing yardage (Peyton Manning is 79th), yet this kid doesn't even have a profile for Rivals or Scout. Sumner only garnered walk on offers from the likes of Wisconsin and Iowa State (largely due to his inability to attend summer camps due to off season shoulder surgery), so why would rivals bother to evaluate the kid, even though he has physical tools similar to the top ranked QBs in the nation.

I don't think I would be counting transfers on the same level here. These guys are transferring for a reason and have not been reevaluated since high school.

Besides that I do agree with Clenz and Kemo. Some states are ignored completely and some players just get stars out of nowhere. Rivals is so bad for ND that one of our commits is listed as a 2011 recruit, and for some reason they list him when he was probably the fourth or fifth best player in the state.

Herb Donaldson had no stars and wasn't even listed on most websites coming out.

We looked at one kid, Michael Heitz and offered him. At the time he was a two star on rivals, then Illinois offered him and he became a three star.

Enough said.

I really don't put much stock into those type of websites, especially for FCS. Its all about who has offer from what school and what school is looking at whom. Those types of sites are for pretty much for BCS schools. You almost need a separate ranking system for FCS schools. Scouts and rivals don't even bother ranking people from some states such as North and South Dakota. You really can't judge and FCS recruiting program until a few years have past.

Shakir Bell, one of Indiana State's high school recruits, was named to the Parade All-America team this year. He was also an ESPN EA Sports All-American, earning a spot on the third team.

Bell was the Indianapolis Star's Super Team Player of the Year for 2009, after rushing for 3,105 yards on 404 carries (7.69 yards per carry), including 38 rushing touchdowns, for the Class 5A state-champion Warren Central Warriors.

Bigger schools offered him a chance to walk-on because they were nervous about his size (5-7, 175) and his 40 time (4.6).

If you beat Northwestern you'd be the second best program in Illinois behind SIU :D

In all seriousness, ISU Red looked pretty good by the end of the season, so I was happy we played them earlier. I still don't think you would have beat us, but the game would have been a lot closer. Looking forward to this year's game in Brookings xnodx
